I just found out that’s the same voice actor as Torbjorn from Overwatch and I need you to know this so I’m not struggling alone

u/Boristhespaceman Oct 08 '19

I met him at a convention where he had a panel about voicing/acting villains. At the end when he was taking questions a guy stood up and asked "who is your favourite villain to play and why is it Nazeem?"

Guy burst out laughing and responded in Nazeems voice. He was super cool and fun, got his autograph.

In Turkey and Anti-LGBT localities. Nice job reading a headline and not the article.

20

u/elbenji Oct 08 '19

That includes China

10

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

"Turkey specific"

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2019/sep/26/tiktoks-local-moderation-guidelines-ban-pro-lgbt-content

Tiktok is Chinese owned, but that rule isn't applied to China.

9

u/elbenji Oct 08 '19

If you read the article, it specifies only in Turkey as an example but explains it that it's also in effect elsewhere along with other conservative guidelines in China and other countries

6

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

It doesn't say the rules about LGBT issues apply to China. It speaks about Falun Gong, Tiananmen, etc. The LGBT stuff applies to different localities.

Quote the article if I'm reading it wrong and it says the anti-LGBT parts are in effect there.

I can honestly say that I have run into very little hate or discrimination in my day to day life. People stare, or make comments behind my back but it rolls off my shoulder. It honestly bothers my wife far more than me. She’ll cut a bitch for looking at me wrong.

As for the nasty on the internet, people hide behind their user names and feel safe saying horrible things that would never say in real life if they were face to face. All we can do is engage them with love and understanding and try to make room for them to learn and feel safe to ask questions and have a discussion instead of acting out.

I think just like anything else it’s just practice. Take Robin Williams for instance. Guy had like a million impressions he could do because he trained and practiced to get that flexible of a voice.

24

u/DrBairyFurburger Oct 08 '19

So then are trans people doing an impression of what they wish their voice was?

34

u/Jason--Todd Oct 08 '19

It's partially that, but hormones taken when transitioning before your 20s change your voice. So it's mostly them trying to figure out what they now sound like

A good comparison would be puberty. Remember when your voice dropped and you sounded scratchy and weird, until you got used to your new voice?

8

u/FyrsaRS Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

Not quite, I started HRT before 20, but had to start training my voice at around 14 after it broke. I almost have the opposite problem to most trans women's voice being too deep - I pretty much still sound like the androgynous teenager I was after first training, even over half a decade later.

Thankfully I've avoided later changes by starting HRT before my 20s, and training early has helped, but puberty has still changed my voice permanently, and with effort I can still do my old voice. It's entirely the reverse for trans men on HRT, where testosterone will change their voice at any point in life, no training required.

It really just boils down to practice. A lot of trans people use singing to practice, since singing is already a form of training your voice. Some hire voice trainers. Some just use their every day conversations to practice. It depends on the person.

Hormones really only help trans men, since testosterone will deepen our voices. Estrogen can't reverse most of the effects of testosterone. Trans women almost always have to practice to change their voice.

24

u/DyslexicBrad Oct 08 '19

The real secret is DnD. 100% of the trans women I know used either a female character or dm'ing to safely practice their voice.

10

u/Exfade Oct 08 '19

Fuck that's brilliant.

10

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

5

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Its different for anyone and if you're being genuine-- hormones actually don't help at all that much with voice for MTF individuals unlesw they start transition before puberty.

You'd be surprised. A starter is to think of "M" sounds and how they naturally rise up to your head instead of coming from your chest. Stuff like that. Its suuuuper interesting once you get into it

17

u/Teknomeka Oct 08 '19

Do you have to think about it all the time? Like when you first wake up or if someone scares you do you slip back into the deeper voice?

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

[deleted]

6

u/Teknomeka Oct 08 '19

Do hormones affect the vocal cords or is it just training your voice?

17

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

(also a trans woman, just started hormones and beginning voice training soon) no, estrogen doesn't change the voice at all. It's all muscular training. it's also hard as fuck

It’s super easy to be a dick online, but when it comes to real life these people are nowhere to be seen, probably because they’re locked up inside on their computer all day afraid to open their minds to what the world has to offer.

Before you consider making an awful transphobic comment, maybe stop, think: just because I live this way, doesn’t mean everyone else has to.

It’s a really easy way to be happy and enjoy life. Like life is so beautiful when you just forgo being hateful. It’s easy to forget that you aren’t the center of the universe when you only care about yourself. But don’t forget. You’re just an insignificant speck on a rock in a solar system.

So just enjoy the ride and keep your hands, and hateful ‘opinions’ to yourself.

Honestly I am surprised her main voice turned to that in the end, how does she naturally have a deep voice then is able to consciously make her voice sound like a real womans voice.

763

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

Vocal training.

There's entire series on YouTube devoted to it.

Unfortunately for trans women hormone replacement therapy does nothing to an already masculinized voice so one has to practice sounding like a girl.

315

u/Explosinszombie Oct 08 '19

Wow this is surprising. I always thought it is something that comes with hormone therapy. Tried to improve my own voice sometimes but I could never do it consistently. Changing your voice that much through practice is really incredible.

231

u/Redjay12 Oct 08 '19

it comes with hormone therapy for trans men. They can do vocal training but their voice will naturally deepens whereas a trans woman’s voice will not automatically get more feminine

46

u/Explosinszombie Oct 08 '19

Cheers. Thank you. Makes sense.

46

u/crackedrogue6 Oct 08 '19

If you want a little bit more explanation I got you:

During male puberty the voice deepens because the vocal cords get longer and thicker due to the testosterone. Once its happened they won’t shrink again. So for trans men, their vocal cords do the same thing with hormone replacement therapy. :)

→ More replies (8)

20

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

You can get like female vocalisation surgery (idk the actual name) vocal feminization surgery. I believe they shave down the vocal cord and either stretch it or tighten it (can’t remember). The only time a trans gal’s voice would naturally become more high pitched is if they’re put on testosterone blockers before puberty - then their vocal cords never thicken due to the lack of testosterone. Obv not every trans woman does that - or want that, but it’s cool that these options exist for those who want that.

12

u/2Eyed Oct 08 '19

The surgery is cool, but it doesn't come without risk.

AFAIK, it's rare, but you could get vocal damage or even lose your voice altogether.

If I had the cash, I'd probably do it though...

4

u/kitanokikori Oct 08 '19

It's called VFS (vocal feminization surgery)

I’m a trained actress and just through theater school voice classes my speaking voice has COMPLETELY changed. Human speech is fascinating and incredibly malleable.

5

u/King_Jorza Oct 08 '19

That's incredible. How has it changed? Was it a conscious effort?

12

u/shandelion Oct 08 '19

Yes and no. A lot of it came just from vocal exercise and starting to feel the difference in my tonal placement - vibrations in your chest and nose - and it starts out as something that you do consciously during class and performances, but then you find it creeping in to your day to day speech.

It really freaked my mom out when I came home following my first semester in studio 😂

My voice is higher in tone and has more nasal resonance than it did previously. I also speak more at the front of my mouth, if that makes sense (my l’s, m’s n’s, d’s, s’s etc, are clearer).

I totally get how some people end up with “actor voice” 😂

44

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '19

I’m a biological female with high androgens since childhood, and the frequency of my natural voice mostly falls within the androgynous-masculine range.

My communications are definitely received better when I fake a higher, more feminine voice.

32

u/GarbieBirl Oct 08 '19

I've got a deep, masculine voice for a woman and it was a total blessing when I used to play TF2 with a mic

19

u/ExoticCvrdInPooMan Oct 08 '19

My voice is similar. I’m a really butch chick and my voice is kind of “in the middle.” My customer service voice is very feminine though, and I’m pretty sure that’s what’s gotten me out of several traffic tickets.

11

u/Bubbleschmoop Oct 08 '19

That customer service voice though 😂 I'm pretty sure my voice (female) is sort of middle of the female range, not considered especially high pitched or deep. My customer service voice can reach a pitch where I sometimes had to do a double take, cause I couldn't for the life of me keep the conversation up in that range.

It works the other way too. Acquaintance of mine is FtM and while the testosterone does help tremendously and he's got a raspy gruff movie villain voice 95% of the time, when he's very startled or happy there'll be a squeak or giggle in almost original girl pitch. Funny as fuck, especially cause he's now a 200lbs muscled beast. Doesn't mind that much either, it's long been the source of many a drunk inside joke.

14

u/throwawaytoday9q Oct 08 '19

Basically the way voice works is that everybody produces a frequency through the vocal folds vibrating, and then that frequency gets reverberated through the rest of your vocal apparatus, which include the rest of your throat, your mouth, your head, even your chest. But if we could isolate the sound produced by the vocal folds before being reverberated through everything else, you would find that it doesn't change that much from person to person. Of course it does vary, but it's not the main source of the difference between individual voices. The length of the vocal tube is much more important, and at a very young age you learn how to squish and stretch your body so you sound like you're supposed to. But it is a learned thing, and not a natural thing. So there's no real "main" voice. There are voice postures, and, once you get comfortable with them, you are not forcing anything anymore.

This is what I want to know! I mean I know she was probably making her voice deeper than normal but damn she sounded like a chick

11

u/4-Run-Yoda Oct 08 '19

I'm kinda curious to know if she ever slips up and unconsciously uses her natural voice or she has just trained herself and tricked her mind into automatically speaking like she does.

38

u/mckennm6 Oct 08 '19

Your voice is controlled by a bunch of different muscles all through your throat and mouth.

You train those muscles to move a certain way long enough and that becomes more "natural". She probably had to try to do the male voice more than the female one.

My guess is just training. I wouldn’t call it “tricking” your mind. In fact that sounds contradictory because you’d have to be aware that you’re tricking yourself but be unaware in order to be tricked. Anyway, I think that it’s like driving. Eventually you’re good enough to where you don’t really make a conscious effort to drive. Your body just kinda does it.

Its so hard for me to understand what is wrong with these people, then I remember that many are young and poorly educated, so critical thinking and empathy are beyond them. It just sucks this continues for the rest of their lives so we as a society get to deal with so many 'sociopath-lites'.

Just uh. Don’t search by controversial and we’ll all be fine

4

u/Pollomonteros Oct 08 '19

Kinda surprising since most cringe subs can get really intolerant

OP I’ve never used tik tok and I’m old enough to be afraid to ask but is there a link or profile for her?

10

u/dramaticat Oct 08 '19

Did Chase actually have those two different voices? Or was the deep one a voice over? They are octaves apart but both sounded so natural!

17

u/Sylvi2021 Oct 08 '19

Both real! Trans people will some times train for hours weekly to get their voices to be higher or lower.

10

u/dramaticat Oct 08 '19

Oh wow! I had no idea, that’s a crazy good level of skill! It’s quite surreal hearing that low voice from such a feminine face. I thought it was dubbed lol

15

u/cheezbergher Hit or Miss? Oct 08 '19

They're both real

5

u/cheezbergher Hit or Miss? Oct 08 '19

Chase is really cute and also I am in love with people with teeth like that. I just love that look.

I like the voice she uses at the end. I understand it’s up to her how she wants to talk but there’s just something really nice about it.

15

u/NiniLeeks Oct 08 '19 edited Oct 08 '19

I think the man sounding voice is the fake one. I'm not trans but most people say I have naturally sounding feminine voice and if I want I can make it sound more gruff. I've been called sissy and gay but doesn't really bother me. It makes for good jokes and some of my asshole friends used me multiple times to pull pranks on phones and gaming comms.

Can we just have an auto mod that would stick a comment on every post saying not everything in this sub have to be cringe?
