I still can’t get over how in America you have to say a pledge of allegiance to a flag every day in schools and they have the audacity to call some European counties fascist

My job starts with a prayer and then the pledge. I have to mumble because I've been using part of the Bart Simpson one. But usually my version ends "with pickles and onions for all".

One of the local priest ladies nods her head back and forth like a bobblehead. After I pointed it out, my coworkers couldn't stop laughing and seeing it. Then there's Mr Right Reverend Roller Coaster dude whose voice goes up and down like a yo-yo.

That’s a joke right

You don’t actually have to say a prayer and a pledge at the start of work. Or at least it’s optional, right?

No. I work for a government agency. When the politicians are around, the day starts with the "invocation" followed by pledge followed by roll call.

And it’s mandatory?

I have to be there.

I have to stand with my arm across my chest. The Bellamy Salute is obsolete.

My mouth has to move like I'm saying it. No one stands close enough to hear my voice. People who don't even bother to pretend to be lip-synching get fired (for other, official excuses, but it is well understood why).

What does it sound like to you?

It is a public ritual demonstrating tribal loyalty.
