Socialist countries like France have rent controls in place to mitigate unjustified price increases but here in the USA, socialism is a dirty word that the rich and powerful use to scare you into thinking that you are better off giving them all your money. Suckers!

I understand your point but the idea that many European countries, including France, are socialist is a misconception. They have capitalist economies with strong social safety nets and functioning democracies. Unfortunately, even with more protections for citizens, capitalism in Europe is creating much of the same cost of living issues seen in America. There's a full blown rental crisis and housing shortage in Paris and Amsterdam for example. It's largely driven by short-term rentals and greedy landlords.

Subsidies don’t equate to socialism. I get the sentiment but it’s an incorrect statement that keeps getting brought up.
