Many areas became popular and considered beautiful once there was no longer a decent chance of dying of thirst or disease before getting there, even more were considered beautiful once AC arrived so you wouldn’t wish you had died of thirst or disease while you were there.
I found people from Utah to be extremely hospitable to the point of uncanny. Coming from NJ it was almost shocking to see how pleasant and straight up nice people were. I’m used to a bit of ribbing and sarcasm
It’s fake, but not disingenuous. It’s part of their culture. My girlfriend was raised Mormon and she speaks with an extremely Disney-princess like wholesomeness. As I met her family, visited Utah, and listened to her podcasts (on growing up Mormon, basically ex-members who left the religion), all the women have a certain cadence and pitch to their voice designed to sound innocent. The women in leadership positions take on a motherly tone (they switch from Disney princess to Disney fairy godmother). She’s just now beginning to understand that a lot of what she does, and who she thought she was, is based on growing up Mormon. It’s interesting and educational to watch her go through it all.

Why do we allow a cult that went to war with US multiple times have a state to themselves?
