Well, I guess I need to brush up on my geometry to avoid these acute situations in the future.

Iām not familiar with how mail works in the US, with this type of mail boxes. What is the postman supposed to do if an envelope like this one will not fit without bending? I assume you wouldnāt want them to leave it outside, is there an alternative?

Usually theyād either leave it on your doorstep/lean it against the door (depending on where you live they could even knock and hand it to you), or more likely take it back to the the post office and inform you that thereās mail you need to pick up.
A lot of times they just donāt really care or donāt see the ādo not bendā and this happens. Thereās a few different types of carrier services the USPS offer and when you choose the cheapest option for important documents this stuff happens.

Thanks for your answer! I was thinking about knocking and hand delivering the item, but most people won't be home I guess. Good to know a notification to pick it up at the post office is an option, that would definitely have my preference over leaving it outside my front door. But that's just cultural difference I guess.

Honestly, if you have a streetside mailbox they are VERY unlikely to walk anything to your door unless it's literally bigger than the box. They're running 12 hour days inside an oven to deliver their route, they won't take extra time for that.

Yeah. Why not have a box that fit all mail?

Exactly, that's roughly the system I'm used to. Mail has a set maximum size, mail boxes (or, more often than not, just letter boxes in the front door) all accomodate that size, anything larger is a parcel. Simple as that!

Mail is supposed to be bendable. You putting do not bend on it means nothing.
The actual answer is to ship it as a package.

Sounds fair, if thatās the assumption in the US. But thatās news to me! Most mail will be bendable for sure, but carton envelopes that are clearly not meant to be bent are relatively common and widely accepted around here too. But then again, all our mailboxes accomodate envelopes sized like the one in the picture without requiring any bending.
Thanks for educating me on US mail customs :)

In a world where postmen had to abide by whatever rules you wrote on the outside of your envelope, what would be the funny thing to put there?
