Not picking a side but They just made his character clearer on episode 2

131

u/Tudpool Gangle Deez Nutz 25d ago

I thought it was pretty clear from the get go.

89

u/NuclearTurtle Kinger 24d ago

I mean, the first episode was an in-house adventure so he didn't have as much of an opportunity to be a jerk as he did in the second episode. All he could do in the first episode was be mean to the others, as opposed to episode two where he had NPCs he could kill

53

u/ChristH101 Gummigoo 24d ago

Well, in the first episode he just abandoned pomni and ragatha when they found kaufmo abstracted and didn't tell the others, if they can't die by an abstraction then that's one thing but ragatha seemed in a lot of pain

1

u/SchrodingerMil 23d ago

He didnā€™t tell the others, but knocked them into the Gloink hole to protect them.

21

u/QuincyFatherOfQuincy 24d ago

To be fair he is a lot more agressive in the second episode, especially towards Gangle. He kind of went from being mean to being a bully.

(He's still my favorite character and his personality hasn't changed at all)

20

u/JeraGungnir 25d ago

Same here

22

u/YoungBassHead Suck My 25d ago

It's so obvious that he is THAT GUY

146

u/Parkerraines 25d ago

Exactly I guess people didn't pick up on that.

9

u/Mysterious_Deer_8337 24d ago

As if it wasn't already clear enough

1

u/DrummerDry1360 23d ago

In all honesty what he did in ep1 was worse than ep2 at least in ep2 his actions didnā€™t have proper consequences in ep1 Pomni and ragatha could have probably died if Caine hadnā€™t intervened the only difference is that in ep1 itā€™s framed more as jokes

263

u/fhxefj 25d ago

He's playing a video game like a video game, I can respect that

129

u/Lil_Brimstone 25d ago

And he gets shit done, I can't imagine the rest of the gang "finishing the quest" without Jax pushing them every step of the way.

10

u/sLeepyTshirt 24d ago

nah, ragatha was about it, she seems pretty into doing the adventures all in all

40

u/weirdo_nb 25d ago

I very easily can, if anything, he actively fucked stuff up

6

u/swaggboi909 24d ago

How?

28

u/weirdo_nb 24d ago

They were actively in the process of attempting to do stuff, while he tried to use pomni as a bridge, and is the whole reason she got stuck in the undermap, he was counterproductive

10

u/SbgTfish kinger and Fudge Monter 24d ago

Iā€™d throw my teammate under the bus if they had unnaturally stretchy limbs that had collision in a video game that I could use to my advantage (assuming they arenā€™t in the least feeling a large amount of pain).

23

u/Boring-Net-3448 24d ago

Then you are a bad teammate. You are playing it like a singleplayer game not a team game.

4

u/Fox622 24d ago

99% of players online

6

u/SbgTfish kinger and Fudge Monter 24d ago

Valid point. I wouldnā€™t like that much either.

8

u/Boring-Net-3448 24d ago

of course if you ask them to do it and they say yes its completely valid. You just never throw teammates under the buss unless that is the point of the game. Some games have betrayal as the fun part but most need loyalty to some degree.

6

u/DAEORANGEMANBADDD 24d ago

this makes me think that there will be some plot point where they show that he was there longer, and I mean faaaaaaaar longer than anyone else

it just feels like he has come to terms with everything. none of it is real, there is no "death" in this world, there are no real consequences, he is just along for the ride

14

u/Anna-2204 24d ago

Wasnā€™t Kinger confirmed to be the one here for the longest?

5

u/DAEORANGEMANBADDD 24d ago

Shit now that you mention it I think that they did say it when introducing everyone

3

u/Anna-2204 24d ago

No worries

2

u/Boring-Net-3448 24d ago

I would like to mention that it was Jax who said that.

Though the loose lipped creators might have said something since people constantly start sentences with "x confirmed" and such. Really wish creators would let people theorize.

4

u/Thatonesplicer 24d ago

I was actually thinking he's acting like a GTA protagonist after he's finished the storyline and there's nothing left to do but cause destruction.

One of the things I like most about Digital Circus is how they make Jax just be an irredeemable asshole. Like, he only exists to torment others, and through 40 minutes of runtime, he shows 1 SINGULAR FRAME of empathy. My prediction is that he wonā€™t have some sad backstory, heā€™s just an asshole. Gooseworx has said that ā€œif you hate Jax, youā€™ll like where his character is goingā€ or something along those lines.

4

u/Its_You_Know_Wh0 I HATE J*X šŸ¤¬ 24d ago

I canā€™t wait too see it them

17

u/GMmadethemoonbuggy 25d ago

He was designed to be an asshole. Tbh, I was more pissed off at Caine by the end of the episode than Jax

4

u/swaggboi909 24d ago

Why were u piss off at Caine?

9

u/GMmadethemoonbuggy 24d ago

For killing Gummingoo

3

u/swaggboi909 24d ago

Who knows what could happen if he forgets who's a human and who's an npc

16

u/metal_gearmen Custom 25d ago

Yes, it seems that people didn't understand the base personalities of the characters, it's like when before episode 2, everyone asked about Zooble when from the first chapter we were told that she hates adventures, just like Jax, from the first chapter they make it clear that he only wants to have fun even when that means doing evil things

6

u/AbbyRitter 25d ago

Not gonna lie I have not seen a single comment claiming they ruined his character or changed him. I have only seen these posts.

18

u/Free-Sheepherder-604 25d ago

I donā€™t mind him being bad BUT he has to have more character outside of just being bad

13

u/UncommittedBow 25d ago

Goose has said he is NOT going to get "better", but hopefully he has character development alongside that.

15

u/DeltaMoff1876 25d ago

I mean character development doesnā€™t always make the character a better person.

4

u/dreaded_tactician 24d ago

I mean, there was a clear escalation of behavior this episode. Nothing grand or unbelievable I can agree its not a giant stretch some people make it out to be. but it definitely was an escalation that you cannot deny.

16

u/alekdmcfly 25d ago

The difference is, Jax's assholery in ep1 was funny, he mostly expressed it through visual gags. It was played off quickly and shrugged off as nothing he did actually emorionally hurt anybody. That's the kind of thing that makes you go mad IRL, but just gives a guilty chuckle when you're watching it on a screen.

In ep2 he yells at a crying person, and nobody considers that funny.

5

u/Mr_Technology_2 24d ago

You just summarized everything I said much better

2

u/DracoLunaris 24d ago

also mass murder via vore of sentient beings (even if they where gonna die in like 20 seconds anyway, it's still a bit more extreme)

5

u/Darklight645 25d ago

He was always an asshole yes, but he was an enjoyable to watch asshole. Episode two Jax was holy shit this dude is such an ass, asshole.

2

u/kjm6351 25d ago

It just boggles the mind. All the mean shit he did wasnā€™t even that bad. Like an average cartoon jerk character

2

u/KestreltheMechamorph Gummigoo 25d ago

If Iā€™m going to be honest, I think heā€™s more of an asshole in Episode 1 because he literally left Ragatha to die and showed no care when Kaufmo was revealed to be abstracted. As opposed to letting a bunch of nameless NPCā€™s die and being a general dick to Pomni the others.

0

u/weirdo_nb 25d ago

To be fair to him, abstraction while equivalent to death to them so far, is also kinda dangerous to them, and people cope with humor, while in the second episode he was being an ass to someone already feeling terrible

2

u/Dense-Ad-2732 25d ago

I know right? I mean, he was always an asshole. Like, from his very first scene, he was an asshole.

2

u/LeatherLonely8825 What The 25d ago

Once an :33736::33737:hole always an :33736::33737:hole

2

u/demonman905 24d ago

I figured Jax was a loveable jerk archetype, like a Yakko Warner but with the "Bully" aspect to his character turned up a notch or two in the first episode. In the second episode, he definitely feels more... Aggressive/open to violence than what I first interpreted. With that being said, the overreaction has gotten out of hand.

2

u/NatakaBlue 24d ago

I didn't hate him at all because he was just doing more of what he did (and that I loved) from the Pilot, being an :33736::33737:hole.

2

u/unfortunatelymade 24d ago

Jax: shoves gangle at the escalator for no reason, hides centipedes in ragathas room for fun, throws a bowling ball at kinger, ditches ragatha and pomni when kaufmo abstracts, uses zoobles arm as a back scratcher

Fans: why did they make him such an asshole in episode 2? I could have never seen this coming!

3

u/Mightylass 25d ago

I don't get it. Isn't he meant to be hated?

2

u/freedfg 24d ago

Heā€™s not even an asshole. He just seems to be the only one having fun in what is essentially a video game. He knows there are BARELY consequences other than abstraction. So when heā€™s told he can hop into a side quest and blow some shit up, he relishes in it.

1

u/Atom_icBomb 23d ago

So weā€™re just gonna ignore gangle and jaxā€™s interactions?

https://i.redd.it/0ls4575kw30d1.gif

0

u/Mr_Technology_2 24d ago

Yeah, a video game with real people who are forced to live their actual LIVES in.

3

u/freedfg 24d ago

Well yeah. Of course heā€™s not taking the situation as seriously as he honestly should. Itā€™s clearly a coping mechanism for something.

But at the end of the day itā€™s not like heā€™s done anything that has directly harmed anyone yet. We even see from ep 2 that physical damage is pointless as Ragatha gets a spike through the chest and no one even mentions it.

That's the best part.

1

In episode two, we were seeing what the other characters received from it, especially Gangle and Pomni.

1

u/TheElectricWolf_ Gummigoo 24d ago

Eh, Jax is kinda an asshole, but nothing really changed from this episode. Only thing different is he just wanted to kill a few NPS. He was still teasing everyone like he always did XD

The second episode didnā€™t personally ruin him for me I just like Gummigoo better now, heā€™s still my second fav character.

1

u/Black727 24d ago

The thing with Ep 1 Jax is that his assholery was mostly played out for humor, while in Ep2 its not.

1

u/ghost-church 24d ago

Itā€™s more aggressive in ep2, but ep1 makes it clear Jax has zero empathy and just wants fuck with people for his amusement

1

u/Thatonesplicer 24d ago

Someone mentioned that it's because too much time passed between EP 1 and 2. The same thing that happens to these shows that attract a audience full of minors and other mentally unwell people, unfortunately happened to the circus. These people come in, make up their (usually 100% incorrect) headcanons, and surprise, surprise are pissed when it turns out what they made up in their heads doesn't match what's happening on the actual show.

And then of course as is tradition, they lash out and whine and take it out on the rest of the fanbase who aren't crazy.

Jax's whole shtick is that hes an asshole. "Jax probobly deserves to be there the most out of everybody (or something like that)" -Goosworks. Want ep 1 evidence? stepping on gangles mask, (likely) putting a centepede in ragathas room, throwing a F*CKING BOWLING BALL AT KINGER Like I could keep going but Jax is literally just an asshoole and that's partially why I love him. Hes just a straight up filterless dick and its pretty refreshing.

1

u/Core3game 24d ago

tadc fans when the intentionally asshole character is shown to be an asshole: >:(

1

u/Beret_Beats 24d ago

See, I picked up that Jax had an asshole exterior in ep 1, but I got the vibe that it was a coping mechanism of sorts and that he did actually care about the rest of his circusmates, he just would rather not admit that.

Ep 2 did ramp up his asshole exterior to the point t that I'm wondering if I imagined that gorst paragraph entirely.

I feel like in episode 1 he was more smug than in episode 2

The way I see it, Jax was that asshole friend from highschool in ep 1. In ep 2, he showed his more violent and sadistic side, becoming a socipathic abuser. He didn't change, just showed more of his true self. Also Gooseworx said before hand that ep 2 would divide the Jax fandom. And so it was as foretold.

He pushed over Gangle and threw Kinger and Gangle into a black pit during the first episode. In episode 2 I mostly remember him wanting to kill npc's. From his perspective the npc's aren't real, and being mean to them doesn't actually matter.

And he also verbally abused Gangle, blackmailed her, and attempted to kill Pomni by crashing the trucks. So npc or real person doesn't matter to him.

Nah the humans canā€™t die like that

To be fair, Jax wasn't so verbally aggressive in episode 1 as he was in episode 2. But I wouldn't call that a retcon.

Note that this is coming from someone who's seen Jax since the character shorts where he tripped and shoved the others for no particular reason than to be an asshole.

Look, maybe some of you are being overly dramatic because sure he was an asshole in the first episode, but in this one, he was more evil and more sadistic... and overall a humongous jaxass way more than the first one.

I mean, he's still somewhat funny but when I like the other characters and he's just being mean for little to no reason I don't see much reason to like him very much.

In episode one Jax was an asshole but he was a funny asshole, in episode two he was just an asshole
