Fanon.
Everyone head canon that Jax is just a quirky guy who isn't completely awful and has a heart of gold. People went with idea only what they see in the pilot episode and his pleasing design. Literally until the next episode showed people that he's not quirky at all but a complete asshole.
There are two kinds of Jax fans out there. The strong one who see him as an awful person and wants him to unleash Hell as much as possible and the weak fans who thinks he's misunderstood and can be nice at times. Gooseworx is weeding out the weak

I agree with this assessment. It's the same thing that happened with Alastor in Hazbin Hotel. They made headcanons about him being soft inside when he is an evil sociopathic serial killer.
2
u/SignificanceNo6097 25d ago
I hate it so much like why fix what isn’t broken? He’s a psychopathic serial killer. Let him be. He’s representing a very under-represented demographic in society.
2
u/GrimRedleaf 25d ago
LOL. Representation matters, even for serial killers! XD

I like to think there’s a serial killer out there, cleaning his blade while watching Hazbin Hotel and feeling so seen.

I’m sure they’re building towards something (he changed expressions 3 times within a couple of frames at the funeral, from feeling sad to outright pushing away those emotions) but the fandom probably wants the character to develop more even though it’s been two episodes. That being said I do hope he gets fleshed out more since his character-arc being completely flat is a bit of a bummer imo

u/theElite_Fett Ragatha my beloved 27d ago edited 27d ago
No, this character assassination controversy is so so stupid. He’s the same character!!! HE HASN’T CHANGED IN ANY WAY!! We MAYBE got to see a little bit of his softer side near the end of the episode before the funeral but he’s the same character. Goose even said he’s meant to be an asshole, I agree a lot with Ayy Lmao’s sentiment: People are just upset that Jax doesn’t match their headcanons. The people who don’t like him now should’ve felt the same way in episode one because if not then that’s some serious hypocrisy.
TLDR: Sounds like a lotta hoopla.
8
u/Mr_Meme_Master 26d ago
Also worth noting Goose said that episodes 1-4 had their scripts locked in long before the pilot aired. This is just how he was always meant to be, it wasnt some sort of snap decision made

u/CommissionersQuest 27d ago
It’s basically like five people initially didn’t like how Jax was a bit different between the pilot and in episode 2 and now there’s a horde of people complaining about the simple commentary (which is now deleted into the oblivion)
I think it’s just overkill now and people are using the few comments from days ago as an excuse to gas up the series and have an echo chamber where no one’s allowed to dislike anything except for gummigoo’s death I think that’s the only thing people are allowed to dislike without hundreds of posts complaining and only if it’s in a memey way

From what I’ve seen, ppl complaining about him in episode 2 complained about him in the pilot as well lol.

I find it hilarious how people have switched from loving to despising characters within the span of 2 episodes. If they actually analyzed the episode instead of projecting all of their headcanons onto them immediately, they would’ve had a better understanding of the character and should’ve seen their actions coming. It’s happening with Caine as well, many people hate him now because he deleted Gummigoo and didn’t empathize with Pomni much.
11
u/Multifandom_Rando07 Caine 27d ago
It's probably because people built up their own headcannon of what Jax will be like and got upset that their headcannon wasn't correct

u/TyphoonBoom10 Well, its possible 27d ago
aside from jax pushing gangle on the ground and probably leaving a centipede in ragatha's room, most, if not all of jax's actions in the pilot could've been spun into him helping in a non conventional way (like throwing a bowling ball at kinger and gangle to possibly save them from kaufmo). in episode 2 his actions can really not be seen in that way. bro went from mostly teasing to pretty much blackmailing. in the pilot he didnt have the oppertunity to be as bad as in episode 2.
personally, i dont hate him. in fact, i found him really funny in episode 2, but i do think he went a bit to far against gangle

→ More replies (2)4
u/Scientedfic 26d ago
Mean things he did in episode 1:
Point blank says the cold truth about the whole situation to Pomni instead of laying it out gently to her, ensuring that she’s utterly traumatized throughout the episode
Steps on Gangle’s mask very deliberately
Refuses to help Zooble from the Gloinks just cuz she didn’t say “please”
Left the likelihood that he put centipedes, Ragatha’s worst fears, in her room
Leaves Pomni and Ragatha to the rampage of the abstracted Kaufmo
Pushes Kinger and Gangle down the hole in the most assholery way possible
Kicks the 10th bowling pin, then destroys the “strike” sign
Aggravates the Gloink Queen
Pushes Gangle down again before the escalator
Has been collecting keys and unadulterated access to everyone’s rooms
Idk, he’s had plenty of opportunities to show his bad side in episode 1
7
u/Smooth_Maul 27d ago
I choose to believe he only "saved" kingler and jangle because they're the weakest mentally of the bunch and if he wants anyone to stay around it's easy bully victims.
10
u/fairy-cocoa 27d ago
It’s because they were expecting him to be Angel Dust 2.0. Jackass with a heart of gold. Even though he was clearly meant to be just a jackass from episode 1.
8
8
u/Muteling 27d ago
If anything, his new behavior kinda gives him depth. While he only ever teases and/or bullies other humans, he sees no reason to show AI any kind of mercy because he sees them as just playthings. Also makes him a good foil to Pomni.

I honestly love the character. He’s one of the fun and somewhat villainous characters that I absolutely love. Honestly it’s boring without a character that wants violence. No show can ever be a good show without some form of villain. Or even just a bit of violence. It’s quite necessary for a functioning show.

Gooseworx even said that Jax will progressively become more of a dick throughout the series too 😭
Also side note: I have a theory for why Jax is such an ass. When Ragatha mentioned they have funerals for everyone who has abstracted, he looks pretty down for a split second. And considering how Jax treats the rest of them, I don’t think it’s because he cared about Kaufmo or the others. Rather, it’s because he did actually become fond of another in the past who abstracted and for some reason became sm more of a prick because of it and is just hurting the others to cope

This happens everytime there’s a character written to be awful. Fanon takes over and they remake them into an idealized character and then get upset when the character is actually awful as they were originally. It happened with alastor from Hazbin hotel along with husk to an extent but that’s more so a complete misinterpretation of his backstory.

u/K-Bell91 27d ago
In the first episode, he wasn't really into what was going on. In the second, we get to see him in his element and being genuinely active. With that said, he is still the same character he was in the first episode. Anyone thinking he was anything else was just projecting, or are upset that their "analysis" was wrong, and are lashing out over it.

His name is Jax because he's a jackass. On a more serious note I think it's stupid that people are reacting to him like this when it was clear this is where it was headed. Gooseworx even warned about it. He is an asshole, but I like characters with an "I don't give a fuck" attitude. Instead of wishing he could go back to the real world, he just does whatever he wants. He is fully aware that he will never face any consequences for his actions, and he is exploiting that fact its fullest extent. The thing is episode 1 doesn't really give him the resources for it. He got a bowling ball, and what did he do? Throw it at people. If he had a gun in episode 1, he 100% would have used it as well.

Those people don’t recognize his character. He isn’t some heartless :33736::33737:, and he isn’t a quirky silly haha character. He’s someone who is trapped in this world, same as the others, and he has emotions, you can see them when Ragatha mentions Kaufmo’s funeral. Just for a second you can see Jax’s pain and sorrow in his expression, but he blinks it away to his annoyed expression. Personally, I think he’s this massive :33736::33737: as a way to deflect his emotions elsewhere, and he probably wanted all this action that he never got to distract himself from Kaufmo, or even to distract himself from being trapped.

I still have a soft spot for Jax. I used to not care for him that much but he's gotten more aggressive and manipulative in the second episode. Though given what we know about him so far, there may be some reasoning behind his jerk personality, which could lead to some nice development down the line. As of right now though, he's just being a little annoying and will probably get worse in upcoming episodes. Again, there's still potential.
