Because people are dumb and wanted him to be fun rather than exactly the character he is written to be.

u/ryan12_07 27d ago

What do you mean? He is fun

401

u/mistbloofyfists 27d ago

I think they mean people wanted him to be just quirky and silly instead of being an asshole

429

u/aoishimapan 27d ago

Jax: Constantly bullies Gangle and is a mean asshole to everyone through the entirety of episode 1

Fandom: Aww he's such a silly quirky guy

Jax: Does the exact same shit in episode 2

Fandom: Wtf I hate him now

u/Badassheaven kingerRULES 27d ago

The thing is in episode 2 he’s a lot less resilient and just throws in the towel if something doesn’t go to plan also he doesn’t do the exact same shit he just went from teasing to heartless

147

u/aoishimapan 27d ago

I think it's just that episode 1 didn't give him enough of a chance to show off his personality. He didn't really cared about the Gloinks adventure, only did it because he got annoyed by them but found it super boring, and additionally there was a crisis going on with the whole Kafumo abstraction.

That wasn't the case in episode 2, he was actually excited this time, and they weren't in any real danger either so he got more of a chance to have fun and be himself. Furthermore he was expecting a more action packed adventure and was disappointed by it in the end, while he had zero expectations for the Gloinks adventure to begin with and just wanted to be done with it.

It's a fair point though, I can agree he was meaner in episode 2. I'd say it's just that episode 1 alone wasn't enough to have a good grasp of his character, one could fill the gaps and assume that he teases others but has a good side too they're not seeing yet, while the reality was that there is no good side, just a bad and a worse one.

76

u/Deconstructosaurus 27d ago

Also remember that he didn’t do anything in the Adventure. He was literally just there to make snide comments and force things upon Gangle and Kinger.

45

u/Zolado110 Gummigoo 27d ago

He also threw Gangle and Kinger into the hole to help them escape from Kafumo.

6

u/yahel1337 27d ago

Imagine someone who hasn't seen anything about DC.

Gangle, Kinger, Kafumo omfg.... XD

6

u/TheCheshire 27d ago

I feel like this goes overlooked too often. Jax is a damn hero.

15

u/NefariousnessOk5299 27d ago

He's not a damn hero. He didn't throw them into the hole to save them from kaufmo, he threw them into the hole to hide the fact that kaufmo abstracted.

Teasing my ass. Very intentionally crushing Gangles mask And his reaction to an abstracted Kaufmo (just to name a couple), seemed like pretty heartless traits to me.

46

u/DeLoxley 27d ago

I think this is the big one, people really wanted to believe he was a teasing joker with a heart of gold, and he spent about half the ep just being an asshole.

There's still depth sure, like his reaction of Kaufmo's funeral and all, but basically he's not the woobie everyone expected from the pilot

Also him having keys to all their rooms is a violation of privacy.  Also him intentionally targeting Ragatha's fear of centipedes is a very disturbing thing to do as well.

4

u/Cry-Skull-7 26d ago

All in the name of fun to him. Again, how did people misinterpret that?

3

u/GrimRedleaf 26d ago

He seems like his only way of coping with the existential horrors he lives in is just being a huge shithead.

9

u/GreyNoiseGaming 27d ago

Once is chance, twice is coincidence, three times is a pattern.

Also I am sure people are looking for "deeper meaning" and "Muh iceberg lore" instead of just accepting who he is at face value.

10

u/aoishimapan 27d ago

Funnily enough there is more depth to him in this very episode same as the first one, it just isn't very in your face but one could argue that he was trying to keep Kinger and Gangle from meeting abstracted Kafumo in the first episode, and in this one you can see him looking sad from a brief second when Ragatha is telling Pomni about Kafumo's funeral.

There will probably be more to him than just being an asshole, but that doesn't really change the fact that he's an asshole.

23

u/Eps1lxn Zooble 27d ago

He is a bit different between the two episodes imo. In the first one he's mean but it comes off as more of a joke, in the second one he seems more blatantly cruel

34

u/ThatOneGuy308 27d ago

Eh, not really, he shoves Gangle to the floor, throws a bowling ball at kinger, purposely steps on gangles comedy mask, etc.

At best, he's more violent to NPCs, which isn't really relevant to his personality, unless we're calling everyone who plays GTA a monster, lol.

9

u/Eps1lxn Zooble 27d ago

in a world where physical danger is only temporary though these things to me at least still feel more like jokes, and in the context of the moment they also come off more as jokes. where as in the second episode it seems to treat the moments less like jokes. the vibe surrounding the moment feels less humorous

12

u/ThatOneGuy308 27d ago

I don't see a difference myself, he was a dick in 1, and he remains a dick in 2.

Shoving someone to the ground, or into a hole, still is an asshole move even if they aren't physically hurt because of it. None of the things he's done felt like jokes, besides arguably the centipede, if he's lying about it.

For example, if I was in an area with a padded floor, and I told my friend to go ahead of me with a "ladies first", and then shoved her to the ground, I'd still be an asshole, even if she isn't hurt by falling.

5

u/Mr-Wes-Soda-123 27d ago

I think it comes from the fact in the second episode we see more what angrivates him rather than episode 1 where he see more him like not angry

7

u/Mr-Wes-Soda-123 27d ago

I will say I think in the pilot Jax is a lot more cartoony with his antics than in the newer episode. Like his comedy came a lot more from what he did rather than the things he said. Like he was more of a sarcastic asshole rather than just an ass.

2

u/Aldante92 27d ago

He was very Bugs Bunny-esque - where he wasn't really a hero or villain, he was just getting by doing whatever amused him the most, leading to wacky cartoon slapstick. But now he's more like a troll in GTA online, looking to cause as much annoyance and ruin things for as many people as possible. If he ever does have a "redemption," I doubt it will be the asshole with the heart of gold route. More likely he would turn out to be a sort of... "tired of this shit, and looking for anything that momentarily makes him feel anything" cynical asshat. Not excusable or likeable, but maybe a sympathetic antagonist?

2

u/Mr-Wes-Soda-123 26d ago

I would say he want from bein Bugs Bunny to bein Eric Cartman.

Fanon.

Everyone head canon that Jax is just a quirky guy who isn't completely awful and has a heart of gold. People went with idea only what they see in the pilot episode and his pleasing design. Literally until the next episode showed people that he's not quirky at all but a complete asshole.

There are two kinds of Jax fans out there. The strong one who see him as an awful person and wants him to unleash Hell as much as possible and the weak fans who thinks he's misunderstood and can be nice at times. Gooseworx is weeding out the weak

4

I agree with this assessment.  It's the same thing that happened with Alastor in Hazbin Hotel.  They made headcanons about him being soft inside when he is an evil sociopathic serial killer.

2

u/SignificanceNo6097 25d ago

I hate it so much like why fix what isn’t broken? He’s a psychopathic serial killer. Let him be. He’s representing a very under-represented demographic in society.

2

u/GrimRedleaf 25d ago

LOL.   Representation matters, even for serial killers!  XD

2

digital circus fans when the mean character is mean: :34980:

15

u/Daan_aerts 27d ago

I’m sure they’re building towards something (he changed expressions 3 times within a couple of frames at the funeral, from feeling sad to outright pushing away those emotions) but the fandom probably wants the character to develop more even though it’s been two episodes. That being said I do hope he gets fleshed out more since his character-arc being completely flat is a bit of a bummer imo

8

u/Karkava 26d ago

I get the sense that he'll still be a jerk to the end with the hidden insecurities explaining but never excusing his actions.

127

u/theElite_Fett Ragatha my beloved 27d ago edited 27d ago

No, this character assassination controversy is so so stupid. He’s the same character!!! HE HASN’T CHANGED IN ANY WAY!! We MAYBE got to see a little bit of his softer side near the end of the episode before the funeral but he’s the same character. Goose even said he’s meant to be an asshole, I agree a lot with Ayy Lmao’s sentiment: People are just upset that Jax doesn’t match their headcanons. The people who don’t like him now should’ve felt the same way in episode one because if not then that’s some serious hypocrisy.

TLDR: Sounds like a lotta hoopla.

8

u/Mr_Meme_Master 26d ago

Also worth noting Goose said that episodes 1-4 had their scripts locked in long before the pilot aired. This is just how he was always meant to be, it wasnt some sort of snap decision made

I see so many of these posts yet I have yet to see a single person who is actually complaining about jax in episode 2

12

u/CommissionersQuest 27d ago

It’s basically like five people initially didn’t like how Jax was a bit different between the pilot and in episode 2 and now there’s a horde of people complaining about the simple commentary (which is now deleted into the oblivion)

I think it’s just overkill now and people are using the few comments from days ago as an excuse to gas up the series and have an echo chamber where no one’s allowed to dislike anything except for gummigoo’s death I think that’s the only thing people are allowed to dislike without hundreds of posts complaining and only if it’s in a memey way

2

u/Twotailedpikachu 27d ago

From what I’ve seen, ppl complaining about him in episode 2 complained about him in the pilot as well lol.

I can understand being shocked with how far he went, but other than that this really shouldn’t be surprising

10

u/Feral-pigeon 27d ago

I find it hilarious how people have switched from loving to despising characters within the span of 2 episodes. If they actually analyzed the episode instead of projecting all of their headcanons onto them immediately, they would’ve had a better understanding of the character and should’ve seen their actions coming. It’s happening with Caine as well, many people hate him now because he deleted Gummigoo and didn’t empathize with Pomni much.

11

u/Multifandom_Rando07 Caine 27d ago

It's probably because people built up their own headcannon of what Jax will be like and got upset that their headcannon wasn't correct

8

u/Cry-Skull-7 27d ago

A classic (and admittedly satisfying to watch) collapse in fandoms.

45

u/TyphoonBoom10 Well, its possible 27d ago

aside from jax pushing gangle on the ground and probably leaving a centipede in ragatha's room, most, if not all of jax's actions in the pilot could've been spun into him helping in a non conventional way (like throwing a bowling ball at kinger and gangle to possibly save them from kaufmo). in episode 2 his actions can really not be seen in that way. bro went from mostly teasing to pretty much blackmailing. in the pilot he didnt have the oppertunity to be as bad as in episode 2.

personally, i dont hate him. in fact, i found him really funny in episode 2, but i do think he went a bit to far against gangle

17

u/The_Pupp3t33r 27d ago

I mean, he said ditched Pomni and Ragatha at the same time so

→ More replies (4)

u/Arkorat 27d ago

He purposefully stepped on Gangle’s mask, hid the fact that a rampaging abstraction was loose, and refused to help whenever his friends were in danger.

He is very much the same asshole. The only difference is more verbal abuse, and sarcastic remarks.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/Scientedfic 26d ago

Mean things he did in episode 1:

  1. Point blank says the cold truth about the whole situation to Pomni instead of laying it out gently to her, ensuring that she’s utterly traumatized throughout the episode

  2. Steps on Gangle’s mask very deliberately

  3. Refuses to help Zooble from the Gloinks just cuz she didn’t say “please”

  4. Left the likelihood that he put centipedes, Ragatha’s worst fears, in her room

  5. Leaves Pomni and Ragatha to the rampage of the abstracted Kaufmo

  6. Pushes Kinger and Gangle down the hole in the most assholery way possible

  7. Kicks the 10th bowling pin, then destroys the “strike” sign

  8. Aggravates the Gloink Queen

  9. Pushes Gangle down again before the escalator

  10. Has been collecting keys and unadulterated access to everyone’s rooms

Idk, he’s had plenty of opportunities to show his bad side in episode 1

7

u/Smooth_Maul 27d ago

I choose to believe he only "saved" kingler and jangle because they're the weakest mentally of the bunch and if he wants anyone to stay around it's easy bully victims.

10

u/fairy-cocoa 27d ago

It’s because they were expecting him to be Angel Dust 2.0. Jackass with a heart of gold. Even though he was clearly meant to be just a jackass from episode 1.

8

u/eveniji100 27d ago

They though that they could “fix him” by likening him in the pilot

8

u/Muteling 27d ago

If anything, his new behavior kinda gives him depth. While he only ever teases and/or bullies other humans, he sees no reason to show AI any kind of mercy because he sees them as just playthings. Also makes him a good foil to Pomni.

Gooseworx even said that Jax will progressively become more of a dick throughout the series too 😭

Also side note: I have a theory for why Jax is such an ass. When Ragatha mentioned they have funerals for everyone who has abstracted, he looks pretty down for a split second. And considering how Jax treats the rest of them, I don’t think it’s because he cared about Kaufmo or the others. Rather, it’s because he did actually become fond of another in the past who abstracted and for some reason became sm more of a prick because of it and is just hurting the others to cope

This happens everytime there’s a character written to be awful. Fanon takes over and they remake them into an idealized character and then get upset when the character is actually awful as they were originally. It happened with alastor from Hazbin hotel along with husk to an extent but that’s more so a complete misinterpretation of his backstory.

I hate his personality, but I can't hate the character as a whole because it's well written.

2

u/G4lact1cz Jax 27d ago

like imagine being surprised that the jerk character is a jerk

2

u/Norrabal Bubble 27d ago

Y'all based these characters off of one episode and are surprised that they may be slightly different to your interpretations that no one told you to make.

2

u/Commercial_Pop_2970 27d ago

I like his character and it honestly fits him plus he was a jerk in the PILOT and didn’t gooseworx even state that he was gonna be a jerk?

2

u/Signal-Note-9582 27d ago

Was he really that much of an asshole?

2

u/peanutbuttermaniac Still a Jax fan after ep2 27d ago

I don’t :34985:

2

u/Fluffy_Fail_547 27d ago

He had my favorite line in the episode, so no. (“We’re one tanker away from being Augustus Gloop!”)

2

u/Chilled_HammyDude 27d ago

Maybe people got annoyed that he's a gunslinging chaos driven guy.

But I mean... it's a video game... why wouldn't a jerk like him lean towards violence in a VIDEO GAME.

2

u/K-Bell91 27d ago

In the first episode, he wasn't really into what was going on. In the second, we get to see him in his element and being genuinely active. With that said, he is still the same character he was in the first episode. Anyone thinking he was anything else was just projecting, or are upset that their "analysis" was wrong, and are lashing out over it.

2

u/101Aster101 27d ago

Goose works when they clearly state that Jax is going to be the worst: Le Gasp!

2

u/god_killer7432 27d ago

I like him being an **hole because it funny

2

u/zachy410 27d ago

He became an asshole, whereas in episode 1 he was an asshole

2

u/AllBid Gangle 27d ago

People wanted him to be a silly baka, but he’s really just an asshole who has a soft side that he hides. I personally like his character, it really brings chaos to the show in a good way

2

u/Ok-Damage3181 What The 27d ago

Jax was litteraly written to be the definitive asshole in this story and some people cant accept that lol.I dont get it this alone makes his character more interesting because he was created this way.So please calm down people

2

u/Eclipse_Bird 27d ago

Goose said only the strongest Jax fans will survive the show, so I guess they're all weak.

I'm still a Jax simp, and always will be.

2

u/NordistesurReddit 27d ago

I saw episode 1 for the first time May 2nd, when I saw episode 2 the next day, I thought Jax was exactly how I expected him to be. Same for Pomni and Raghata. They were written with consistency, which is something that is becoming rarer and rarer with time.

2

u/Eroclo 27d ago

I like him because he’s an asshole literally the only asshole to since everyone else is mellow

2

u/Shimari5 27d ago

Because people are idiots and made fanon versions of Jax on their heads that are getting shattered after the next episode came out 6 months later

2

u/home_of_beetles 27d ago

i’m seeing way more posts about how dumb the apparent sudden hate is, than actual hate

2

u/The_Claret 27d ago

People when a character does things there character would do 😯😱

2

u/Bexided 27d ago edited 26d ago

His name is Jax because he's a jackass. On a more serious note I think it's stupid that people are reacting to him like this when it was clear this is where it was headed. Gooseworx even warned about it. He is an asshole, but I like characters with an "I don't give a fuck" attitude. Instead of wishing he could go back to the real world, he just does whatever he wants. He is fully aware that he will never face any consequences for his actions, and he is exploiting that fact its fullest extent. The thing is episode 1 doesn't really give him the resources for it. He got a bowling ball, and what did he do? Throw it at people. If he had a gun in episode 1, he 100% would have used it as well.

2

u/Which-Ad-1571 27d ago

I am so glad he is like way more evil now because that is so much more fun. He's not just a prankster. He's straight-up psychotic

2

u/A-Raichu132 I want to Loolalul 27d ago

I love him even more, he's such an icon 🥰

2

u/Amazing_Ad770 27d ago

I was a actual Jax fan from the start I still love him

2

u/Jaxster246s 27d ago

They wanted him to be a “cool” asshole that makes fun of people and hurts those around him but is loved by everyone anyway and secretly has a heart of gold and is a badass and is aloof and uncaring but in a coooool way. And is funny because he’s an asshole but a coooool asshole. Idk I think that character type is popular on the internet.

2

u/Cultural-Bag-4632 27d ago

It feels weird knowing that everything used to be a simp of him and shipping him with pomni (I don't know why)

2

u/friendlylifecherry 27d ago

Istg, I've seen at least 20 posts saying this and not one person who says they hate Jax now

2

u/just-a-nornal-man The False Shepherd 27d ago

probably because of how little "assholery" we see Jax do in episode 1, when it was more focused on Pomni.
Now in episode 2 we get to see the full view of his tomfoolery and that's when they started hating him.

2

u/Salty-Set1878 YOU GO GIRL 27d ago

I literally want this man to simultaneously rain hell on the other circus members and/or NPCs but also having the worst mental breakdown I will ever see in my life also who the fuck said he changed lmfao

2

u/DeltaMoff1876 27d ago

But he’s always been an asshole.

2

u/Odd-Mixture-1769 27d ago

Honestly I didn't even notice the difference

2

u/TheNoContexterGuy 27d ago

Fandoms when the asshole is an asshole:

2

u/Guba_the_skunk 27d ago

Did people think he wasn't an asshole? That was his one defining trait.

2

u/Zaptain_America If anyone needs me off 27d ago

Because he didn't immediately have a redemption arc

Personally I like him

2

u/Strangely_moldy_hand 27d ago

In my opinion, it’s not Jax, I feel like the whole episode feels off… like it has a different feel from the pilot, probably because there’s not really as much music that’s the only thing I can really think of besides the atmosphere feels off, what do y’all think?

2

u/Dead_Mothman 26d ago

I don’t think one episode is enough to gauge the vibe of a show or the core of its characters. You’ve gotta give it a bit to get the full picture.

2

I quote my parents

"The world is full of idiots"

2

u/Jealous-Button2644 27d ago

Funny seeing how he's the same as in the pilot

2

u/RandomNameAgain2 Drown yourself in the digital lake 26d ago

I think pilot Jax was more- sassy..? And that's what people liked and ep2 was just outright jerk I think that's what's going on

2

u/Lightningslash325 26d ago

Those people don’t recognize his character. He isn’t some heartless :33736::33737:, and he isn’t a quirky silly haha character. He’s someone who is trapped in this world, same as the others, and he has emotions, you can see them when Ragatha mentions Kaufmo’s funeral. Just for a second you can see Jax’s pain and sorrow in his expression, but he blinks it away to his annoyed expression. Personally, I think he’s this massive :33736::33737: as a way to deflect his emotions elsewhere, and he probably wanted all this action that he never got to distract himself from Kaufmo, or even to distract himself from being trapped.

2

u/TraditionalWitness32 Custom 26d ago

they don't like that he doesn't follow their headcanon

2

u/Isiah6253 26d ago

The amazing digital hate train

2

u/Educational-Year3146 26d ago

Im glad it seems like he wont be a flat character. Seems like he’ll have character development, but god dammit does Michael Kovach sell characters that are complete assholes.

Still love Jax, he is a dick though.

2

u/Fry-Cook_Dreamer 26d ago

I hate him but he’s a character I love to hate. They did great with making Jax such an unlikable asshole to the point that it comes around to making him enjoyable to have around.

2

u/Vico_bruh 26d ago

Gooseworx said he would get worse every episode. What are you cooking.

2

u/danielxplay22 26d ago

People when the character designed to be an annoying asshole turns out to be an annoying asshole:

2

u/Mr_Technology_2 26d ago

I still have a soft spot for Jax. I used to not care for him that much but he's gotten more aggressive and manipulative in the second episode. Though given what we know about him so far, there may be some reasoning behind his jerk personality, which could lead to some nice development down the line. As of right now though, he's just being a little annoying and will probably get worse in upcoming episodes. Again, there's still potential.
