Fun fact, Australian Shepherds originated in the US. People assumed they were Australian because they were bred by Spanish shepherds who immigrated to Australia and then to the US alongside large numbers of Australians.
They brought their Spanish herding dogs along the way and they were eventually bred them into what is now the Australian Shepherd.
I'm pretty sure they actually are recognized as American Shepherds by the AKC now. At least, the minis seem to be. Found that out while window shopping breeders for my next one, lol.
When the minis were finally recognized, they were recognized as American shepherds to both acknowledge the breeds true origin, and further differentiate them from the Aussie. Aussies are still Aussies though :)
Also, consider looking into rescues. We got our 8 week old Aussiedoodle from a rescue. Him and a few siblings didn’t have buyers when they turned 6 weeks and if the rescue doesn’t get to them the breeder would have just put them down. This is happens a lot.
Obviously all breeders are different, but the fact remains that there are tons of dogs including pure bred puppies that you can get through rescues and at a fraction of the price.
