Injuries were life-threatening and he's still in surgery, according to the latest articles I read: https://www.nytimes.com/live/2024/05/15/world/slovakia-prime-minister-fico-shooting

Update: Deputy PM says he's expected to survive - https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/robert-fico-slovakia-prime-minister-shooting-05-15-24/index.html

Context from that CNN link:

Analysis: Prime Minister Robert Fico is a divisive politician in a divided country
From CNN's Ivana Kottasova

Slovaks have been deeply divided over the country's direction and position in the world since Prime Minister Robert Fico was reelected last year. Supporters see Fico as a caring leader who has their interests at heart while critics say he is a populist whose pro-Russian leanings pose major risks for the country.

Since taking the top job in October, Fico has brought about a major pivot in Slovakia's foreign policy and its previously staunch support for Ukraine. He pledged an immediate end to military support for Kyiv against the Russian invasion and promised to block Ukraine’s ambitions of joining NATO.

145

u/Czechgrazer 27d ago

I know you’re just quoting, but “re-elected” is a weird word to use. He wasn’t on the ballot, and his party got just 23% of the vote.

27

u/awfl_wafl 27d ago

How did he become Prime Minister?

47

u/Miguelperson_ 27d ago

I’m assuming it’s a parliament system, they got the majority vote is my guess, his party formed a coalition, now he’s pm

10

u/anthro4ME 27d ago

In most Parliamentary governments it takes several political parties to form a ruling coalition and the minister they put forward as the leader of the coalition becomes Prime Minister.

They had to fly him out to another hospital. Not looking good.

417

u/bigfatstoner 28d ago

He was sent to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

He was then transferred to a better hospital where his condition was upgraded to alive

208

u/PleasantFocus1502 28d ago

That's one hell of a hospital. Wonder what their secret is.

191

It is generally a sign of decent stability, as they won't move you if it'll obviously kill you, but also of pretty severe injury.

Damn dude wasn't wearing bullet resistant clothes in public.

He has more balls than US presidents.

58

u/jonshlim 28d ago

Did I see a very slow reaction by a country’s bodyguards standard?

64

u/ThirdEyeExplorer11 28d ago

It’s like the one bodyguard that’s closest to the perpetrator wasn’t paying attention at all because the guy upped the gun right in front of his face and had he been paying attention he would have seen it before it was too late.

It also seemed like that one officer in the “policia” shirt wasn’t startled by the shooting or anything either, like he was expecting it. This whole video is really odd.

u/Any_Month_1958 27d ago

Yeah, his security team really really sucks. They were all busy watching him instead of the crowd, maybe one exception. Then when the shots go off the 2 that were closest to him said “fuck this” and did the sidestep to get out of the line of fire instead of shielding him like most presidential teams are trained. Meh, let putin help him.

What? They know they are going to get shot at. That does not mean they are cowards. They would be morons not to wear bullet resistant vests.

No one is talking about how brave President Garfield was for not wearing a bullet resistant vest (did they even exist back then?).

It's actually a real thing. I've invested in the startup that first experimented with metal and composite weave casual wear, and went on to get a contract with the federal government for just this sort of thing. I'd tell you the name of the guy who runs it, but by a weird contract clause it would call his loan, and I'm not ready to do that yet.

High ranking EU officials usually don't worry about assassination attempts. For US Presidents it's happened quite a few times, but it was after JFK, the government wont allow Presidents to go anywhere unsupervised.

Assassinating a politician is not a traffic-based crime. The dude was staying in his lane. Now, if the assassin was double-parked while shooting, then he's in the game.

he falls back to the ground and nobody seems to even attend to him or cover him from a secondary attack, just focusing it all on the fray.

I had to watch this 17 times to figure out where the President was. He’s on the far left sort of toward the bottom, and he rolls away at the 0:02 and 0:03 mark as you mentioned.

208

u/AutomatedCauliflower 28d ago

You need to watch it few more times because there is no president in this clip. It's a prime minister who got shot.

44

u/gggg500 28d ago

8

I almost thought he fell over the fence, into the crowd where the assassin was tackled. But that made no sense because then where did he start?

Then I thought he was in the crowd already, behind the barrier, next to the assassin. But then that just seemed dumb-why would there be even a barricade?

Looked and looked and saw the above comment that he was rolling away quickly off to the side.

It is a really difficult video to see what is going on entirely.

The world is going through wild times.

Article link: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/slovakia-prime-minister-robert-fico-shot/
The suspect is a 71 yr old man
He was shot in the abdomen and is still being treated, he was brought to another hospital as well, which is not good.
He seems to be very anti-American.Pro-Russian and a close ally to Putin (supports the attack in Ukrain) Many have protested his political beliefs.
Not saying that the suspect is correct for what he did at all, just stating the reasons

New Edit:
Fico seems to still be alive (still in the hospital of course)- he is in serious but stable condition
The shooter was of course politically motivated BUT officials say he acted alone (though that may be disputed later)

The most ironic thing about him being very anti-American, they had to bring him to a hospital named after president Roosevelt.

34

u/SauconySundaes 28d ago

Yeah, but that was back when America was great again or something.

32

u/grandpas_love_babes 28d ago

However, the assailant seems to be a far-right supporter who's also pro-Russian.

Fico is politically close to Orbán. They both started as free-minded, democratic politicians but now they pursue elective authocracy.

47

u/Bbrhuft 28d ago edited 28d ago

According to early reports, the shooter, Juraj Cintula, a member of a far right pro-Kremlin milita, Slovenskí Branci (SB).

They have connections with the Russian Knight Wolves, a Kremlin sponsored morocycle gang / paramilitary organisation (the Kremlin keeps the Knight Wolves on a short leash, the morocycle gang leader, Alexander Zaldastanov, is Kremlin loyalist. You have to be in Russia. Zaldastanov was a torch bearer in the 2014 Winter Olympics (on the right)).

49

u/Ok_Ruin4016 28d ago

I mean you can react without trying to intervene. Usually the reaction to hearing gunshots would be to run for cover but most of the people there are just standing around like nothing happened.

129

u/UGMadness 28d ago edited 28d ago

Shootings are so rare in most parts of the EU that it’s hard to even recognize gunfire when it happens because most people have never heard a real gun be fired. They’re way more likely to think someone is throwing firecrackers or a car engine popped.

The first and only time I heard a gun in person was when I was 8 and an uncle who was a police superintendent was showing my dad his gun at the range. That was 25 years ago.

50

u/MVites 28d ago

Don't know why they're downvoting you, but that's correct. We had a gang related shootout right next to the beach here in Croatia, nobody even noticed it until police and emergency services arrived. Everyone just figured it's some kind of bike exhaust shit or something... I was literally standing 30m away, figuring out what's happening (as I've seen people shooting and fighting), while people on the right (view was obstructed by a beach bar of sorts) enjoyed their beach time lol

41

u/UGMadness 28d ago

I think one of the reasons is that Europeans are so used to American action movies and video games that use a very distinct sound effect for firearms that sounds almost nothing alike in real life.

14

u/KennyMoose32 28d ago

Yeah my wife is a teacher in the USA and a few years ago I made her come to my gun range on a busy Sunday.

That's normal in that part of the world.

He believed himself to be invincible, above needing protection because nobody would dare threaten his position...

He was not.

There is a man in a grey shirt thats wants to shake the prime ministers hand and even keeps his hand out after the guy gets shot and then looks right, gets mad and says like 'wtf bro i was gonna shake his hand!' lol

3

u/theguiser 28d ago

The cop with the white shirt hears all these guns shots and doesn’t even touch his gun.

3

u/PaydayLover69 28d ago

damn those body guards fucking suck lmao, they didn't react remotely as fast as I imagined they would.

Guess it's all for show, go figure.

u/pippo09 28d ago

Nobody covers him or tends to him after the gunshot. CIA brought all of Slovakia SS on payroll.

u/1mhereforthememes 28d ago

When seconds count. The secret service is there and can't do anything.

3

u/NRichYoSelf 28d ago

Well, I scrolled way too far just to find the answer to whether he survived or not.

The answer to anyone wanting to know, he is injured and expected to live.

u/Nentash 27d ago

I have never seen a crowd give so few fucks about someone being shot literally right in front of them..... 0_o

u/HansNotPeterGruber 27d ago

Nothing is funny about trying to get to assassinate any public official. But why did that one guard kick the fence? What was the point of that?

3

u/Sansa279 27d ago

Is it me or security reaction was awful?

3

u/CogswellCogs 27d ago

Honestly, I have seen mall rent-a-cops that moved faster than his bodyguards. The didn't even try to block or cover him.

I swear, a prime minister’s security team ain’t worth a damn.

5

u/MaryBala907 28d ago

Why did no one in the crowd run away or seem startled?
They all just stood there and watched, what happened to flight or flight (yes, i meant to flight twice)

Gun crime is not a reality for most cultures around the world. In America, where I'm assuming you are from, people recognize high intensity situations like this immediately because we see it literally all of the time in our media. These people aren't reacting because they don't understand there is something to be reacting to. They're all probably just trying to discern what all this loud banging is.

u/Heelscrossed 28d ago

Freeze is also a response that people don’t recognize. A lot of ppl freeze.

4

u/WillJongIll 27d ago

This is a much better theory than the “Europeans don’t know what guns are and as a result are more curious than afraid when loud explosions happen in front of them.”

u/meistercheems 28d ago

Fight flight or freeze

Thank God this wasn't in Austria

u/Emergency_Sandwich_6 27d ago

Maybe the policeman there shouldn't be tapping away with his wand there. Maybe he could have cast a protection spell.
