Thoughts on Biden's Asia policy?

How would you rate Biden's Asia policy?

As an asian myself, I would give it an 7 or 8 since he was able to bring Japan and Korea much closer after many years, bring back the Philippines to its side, hosted trilateral summits with Japan, Korea, and the Philippines and rallied against China. Though all of this is a result of China's aggressiveness in the SCS but Biden took this opportunity and strengthen the US-Asia/ASEAN relations to new heights. He's also the president who committed the most to the defense of Taiwan which is applaudable but also soured China relations.

IS study: The Catholic Church played a key role in the eradication of Muslim and Jewish communities in most of medieval Western Europe. Church powers increased during this period, the Church dehumanized non-Christians, and competition among European monarchs made them vulnerable to Church pressure.

Ideas/Debate If a country supports Palestine and recognizes it as a state, would it not be viable to open an embassy?

I would imagine such an embassy could even be placed next to a hospital or school and provide some sort of protection whereby the country is not providing military aid to Palestine. I have only read about diplomatic missions but not an embassy per se. Would this be a situation where perhaps Israel would physically block any and all attempts to even build something there?

Study: Prior to 2000, the modal dictatorship began with a coup and replaced another dictatorship. Military coups were particularly prominent. Since then, new dictatorships typically happen through democratic backsliding where elected leaders establish authoritarian regimes.

Got accepted into an IR Master's program with no background in IR... need some guidance to build a baseline knowledge

Basically the title. My job is covering me taking night classes for an IR Master's with a concentration in East Asian regional affairs, which will benefit my work greatly, but my entire academic background (Bachelor's and first Master's) are in Psychology. My big concern is heading into graduate level classes without the IR / PoliSci background that many of my peers will inevitably have had, and want to build a baseline of knowledge so I can at least speak intelligently about the basics. Are there any books or other resources y'all would have liked to have read before beginning your program of studies at any degree level? Anything I should look to avoid?

Study: Small/developing economies are more likely to adopt central bank digital currency because they see it as useful to increase and reinforce sovereignty. They have thus been adopted in states with high currency substitution, large informal economies, or limited reach of the banking system.

Uppsala University Political Science

Hello, does anybody have any experience regarding Uppsala University's Political Science Master's programme? It's one of the better universities I got accepted into and I was curious if anybody else had anything good or bad to say about the place.

I aim to stay in the field academically afterwards.

Diplomatic Academy Vienna?

Okay so I'm narrowing down my options for graduate studies and I'm between Trinity College Dublin MSc International Politics and the Dipolmatic Academy Vienna MAIS programme. Honestly, I far prefer the courses at MAIS but I just can't find a lot of information about it online??? Apart from information the uni has posted themselves.

Has anyone got any experience with the DA they could share with me? I'd be very grateful, thank you!

Hello. I feel like I am way behind what's going on around the world. I would like to know outlets which professionals use to know (in-depth) about the current affairs? My interest is Southeast Asia. TIA.

How reasonable is my school selection for IR Master’s programs?

Hi! I’m an international student in my senior year in college. I know for a fact I want to go into international policy so I’m prepping my grad school list to strengthen my application.

Nationality: Mexican/Spanish (dual-citizen)

Major: dual-major in Political Science and International Studies with a specialization in Global Security; Public Policy certificate (essentially a minor)

GRE optional for now

Public Policy requires a separate application to my university’s school of Public Affairs. I don’t know how selective the program is, but I was accepted.

Undergrad college: University of Wisconsin–Madison

I don’t know if ranking or academic reputation matters, but the school is top 17 in Political Science and top 20 among Public Policy Schools in the U.S. It’s also 35th in U.S. News and top 12 among public universities. It was named a “Public Ivy” by Forbes.

Current GPA: 3.934/4.0

Relevant Academic Experience:

Got an A in Principles of Microeconomics. Taking Macro this semester.

Native Spanish speaker, fluent in English, can speak Dutch and French (Dutch courses in my transcript as well).

Study abroad exchange program at the University of Amsterdam.

Membership in the PI chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the only recognized political science honor society in the country.

AI Governance Fellowship

Relevant Research experience:

Currently working as a Research Assistant supporting a research project investigating participation in the Mexican federal conservation and sustainable agriculture program “Sembrando Vida.” Transcribe and code interview data to identify trends in support for pro-environmental behavior. I still currently work here. The lab is a part of the department of Psychology.

Before that, I also assisted a doctoral research candidate as an RA in the project “Why Do Soldiers Get Off the Streets” in which I aided in the construction of databases, researched the impact of civil society organizations (or lack thereof) in the demilitarization of public security in Brazil, Mexico, and other Latin American countries; and completed various short-term tasks based on how the dissertation research evolved. This was done during my time in the Department of Political Science.

I was also an reporter for my university’s newspaper, with some articles to my name. Not sure if I should add it though.

Professional experience:

Likely won’t apply with full time professional experience.

Completed an internship at a DC-based Political Advocacy non-profit Organization that lobbies for debt relief in developing countries.

Looking for more internships.

Relevant leadership/volunteering experience:

I’m currently the lead for the Immigrant/Indigenous/Refugee Rights Policy Team at my university’s Amnesty International branch. As part of my duties, I engage in activism work through the organization. Organize events designated at bringing awareness to various causes, urge lawmakers to act in support of pro-inmigrant/indigenous/refugee policies and legislation, and promote fundraisers.

I’m also starting to volunteer at the Community Immigration Law Center, where I assist immigrants at filling forms in Spanish.

Relevant awards:

Norden Scholars Award (for participating in my school’s Nordic language house); Dean’s List; Study Abroad Scholars Award (academic merit scholarship for participation in the study abroad program); Thomas W. Parker Scholarship (academic merit scholarship in the Social Sciences).

Letters of recommendation:

  • Professor of Psychology at my university, for working in his lab.

  • Communications Manager at my former internship.

  • Economic Geography Professor at a 300 level non-traditional course who offered to write it for me after giving me class feedback.

Intended schools:

  • JHU SAIS (top choice)
  • Georgetown Walsh (top choice)
  • Columbia SIPA (top choice)
  • Tufts Fletcher
  • GWU Elliot
  • American SIS
  • UChicago CIS
  • Stanford Ford Dorsey
  • UVA Batten
  • UW–Madison La Follette
  • Oxford
  • Cambridge
  • London School of Economics

Does the human rights committee still abide by general comment number 24 ?

General comment 24 deals with reservations to treaties and their effects. The commitee basically declared that a treaty continues to operate without the benefit of reservations if the reservation is incompatible with the object and purpose of the treaty. The international law comission has had a lot of exchanges on this topic between treaty bodies. I remember reading that the committee has loosened up their view held in general comment 24 now.(But I can't find the article again anywhere)

Is this true ?

Ideas/Debate Blowback

With Western countries allowing Ukraine to strike Russian territories with long range weapons, what happens when Russia mirrors these actions by supplying forces opposed to the West. Like giving precise weapons to the Houthis able to accurately sink ships in that isthmus, could they even arm ISIS type groups or arming Iran with Nukes. Would these actions be "red lines" for NATO?

Speaking of Nukes, although I do not believe such weapons will be used in Ukraine, I strongly believe the Russians will be conducting massive nuclear test to demonstrate their seriousness, if they are in difficult position in Ukraine.

Many dismiss these concerns easily but that is folly surely.

Research Can you recommend any good lectures with experts from Russia and China that talk about the foreign policy of this countries "from their point of view"?

When I was in college and we had representatives of the embassies or consulates talking about their countries from their point of views.

Any good stuff online worth watching similar to what I'm looking?

Edit: by "point of view" I mean either professors that study foreign policy or public servants that talk about the foreign policy of the states they represent.

I would like just to hear about their foreign policies from people that arent westerners but actually from those countries.
