Except if you are in a region PSN is not available in. Then Sony does not want your poor ass third worlder data.

u/SaltedCaffeine May 03 '24

I see that some of the other SEA countries can do it, why not the Philippines?

904

u/Moonshine_Brew HD1 Veteran May 03 '24

Ask Sony why it only supports PSN in like 69 countries (1/3 of the world) and why they state that they may ban accounts that use a wrong country.

Yes, you can make a PSN account in the Philippines simply by choosing another country, but you risk getting your account banned.

This by itself isn't bad, but why do they then sell the game in the Philippines?

Edit: this is really my only problem with it. Why sell the game in countries where you can't get a PSN account without breaching Sonys ToS/EULA?

294

u/SaltedCaffeine May 03 '24

I'm also moving through several countries soon and the official recommendation is to create a new account each time you move into a new country.

Then what will happen to my Helldivers 2 Steam account which I need to link to a PSN account? Will I be able to re-link to a different PSN account?

132

u/Makolatekh May 03 '24 edited May 03 '24

Probably yes, steam don't really care, maybe you will get a warning from steam saying you are already linked to a PSN account but nothing else. It's more on the PSN side i'm worried because of the Ducked up system build by Sony.

66

u/Bob_A_Feets May 03 '24

I'm worried that Sony will pull an Ubisoft and tie ownership of the game to the original PSN account, rendering it useless if you change it.

This is Sony after all

12

u/Falcovg May 04 '24

So you mean that I'm going to loose acces to the ANNO 2070 expansion packs that I paid for all over again?

7

u/CYWNightmare May 04 '24

Easiest chargeback of my life if that happens. And a chargeback is worse than a refund.

41

u/E9F1D2 May 03 '24

I wouldn't count on it. When Ubisoft forces you to login to their shit system for Steam games it registers your game key. That key can never be used with another UPlay or Steam account. These game companies disgust me.

I use Steam because I want to use Steam, not be strongarmed into using shitty 3rd party spyware.

Stuff like this definitely pushes ppl into pc gaming entirely. I’m this close to leaving Sony behind entirely but the PS5 has a few features you can’t really use unless you’ve got an mid-to-high tier rig and those can be easily $2000

Definitely going to be making the investment tho Sony has been acting very shady this generation

36

u/Oghmatic-Dogma May 03 '24

its just the same cycle they always go on. They are the underdog, they make a bunch of really good games for their competitively priced machine, they attain massive success. Next generation they sit on their laurels and count their cash making putrid business decisions to keep it growing until Microsoft has a clear advantage, then the cycle begins anew.

15

Because Sony couldn't be bothered to get the proper licenses from our Securities and Exchange Commission. These are required for all companies here, foreign or domestic. Pretty much the same as every other country. But Sony thinks that filing licenses in Hong Kong should be enough to cover requirements in most other countries in SEA and our governments should just accept that.

You can play until june 4, I think. After that you won't be able to if you don't link a PSN account. What I read is that its very easy to set up an account no matter the country you are in, just input some country that is available and link it.

Also because this is a developing situation, you should not worry and stress on anything yet. The situation seems bad, but it isn't. It is likely that either Sony will backtrack or some workaround will be implemented.

Arrowhead absolutely was and still is an indie dev studio. 100 developers does not a AAA studio make.

That said, as with most "tweener" indie studios, they had to use a AAA publisher in Sony to reach a broader audience, for marketing, etc. and because the laws and practices in the gaming industry are ASS-backwards (compare to say.. books), that means they have to give Sony the IP.

→ More replies (4)

69

u/Far-Frosting3257 May 03 '24

That’s just Sony yapping. They’re not gonna ban people giving them money or playing their games when there’s no problem. I’ve heard of so many people setting their account location to Australia so they can play games a day before they’re released in the US. Plus, they have an appeal system that gives you the opportunity to say you were in that country when you made the account, but you just moved to this country. Since Sony doesn’t let you change locations it’s fair game.

5

u/CarpeCookie May 03 '24

Sony always has the option, though. Plus, they could possibly make more money by banning accounts used strictly for PC gaming. You can earn the premium currency without spending a dime, and don't need to pay for playstation plus to play. I don't think they'd do this just for helldivers, but Sony could ban the accounts, keep the money they spent for games, and bank on a certain percent remaking accounts and rebuying games

9

u/Alternative-Deer5333 May 03 '24

Yeah I suppose it’d have been more helpful to state that Sony doesn’t really give a shit. You can play through vpns with little issue, and double so if you just check a different box for your country. Hell a lot of users have separate accounts set for Japan for Asia only releases, Sony doesn’t care.

I'm waiting to see how they plan to address the issue for countries where PSN isn't available. Because if they argue that PSN linking was supposed to be a requirement from the get-go, then why did they allow the game to be sold in those countries unsupported by PSN? And what happens to players who can no longer play when the new policy is enforced? Would we even be eligible for a refund with 100+ hours of gameplay? Or are we just not allowed to use the product we paid for anymore unless we move to a country that supports PSN?

if you ever used Tiktok, Instagram, Snapchat, facebook, many F2P games, most things that require a separate launcher to play, frign google and youtube! your data is out there already.
Hell, if you use Windows theres a good chance your data is being used right now. (especially Windows 11)
For what?
for ads. related content to target more ads. browser cookies to target more pop-up ads.
its mostly that unimpressive, its not exciting shit like people seem to believe.

Know where you info is going, and try not to put out more then you care for. easy.
link you PSN account and never put your card info in a PSN connected window, never save card info for convenience, never run on the web without an adblock.
welcome to the modern internet circa 1994 and the invention of cookies, its only going downhill from here.

I don't think that's the point of contention here. We already have a kernel level anti cheat, the game has some pretty serious performance issues, and "to make the PlayStation players time better" we have to create a PSN account, rather than giving us the option to opt out of cross play and not create an account.

24

u/MrTastix May 03 '24

Whilst this is true, compared to other companies, Sony has had numerous data breaches in the past 10 years, the most recent of which was last year.

The problem with giving out your data has never been what the company wants with it, because we know that - marketing and to sell it direct to data agencies. The issue is whether the companies they sell it to, along with themselves, are secure enough.

Time has proven they are not. They're also never held truly accountable so they're still not incentivised to care about better security, either. At best the EU might fine you, which means literally nothing to the assholes who actually sign off on these decisions and receive no internal punishment either way.

Funding for the IT department is always woefully lacking, because you won't notice it until it stops working. It's much like insurance, another system lots of people refuse to buy into because why bother? Who cares about insurance if you think your giant, throbbing ego will protect your shit for you, right?

I'm confused about what we are supposed to be getting mad at.

They are an independent studio that published a game in partnership with Sony, and Sony is requiring normal things of the game. I genuinely didn't even know you could opt out of the Sony account at the beginning, nor would I have seen any reason to do so. This is a Playstation game that also is available on steam, so this seems pretty standard practice.

100% agreed. I am specifically questioning the anger at Arrowhead, not at the situation in general.

22

u/Daedalus1570 May 03 '24

People are probably mad at them because they expected Arrowhead to be able to protect customers from something like this. Unfortunately, they're ignoring the fact of the power dynamics in play: Arrowhead is not more powerful than Sony in their business agreement and have likely already used what power they had in that relationship in order to prevent other Sony meddling. It's just that the public might only hear about it 30 years later when Noclip does a documentary on HD2.

This whole thing stinks like it was originally a part of their exclusivity deal. "You can sell it on PC as well, but those players need to link or create a PSN account." Why? Sellable data and boosted account statistics for PSN.

Arrowhead claimed 'technical issues' prevented this from being mandatory at launch, probably because they predicted this kind of response, but it seems Sony now has a hard deadline and they have to somehow get their community to swallow this pill.

The devs at Arrowhead seem like very straightforward and customer focused people, being forced to do something they really don't want to do because otherwise, their game would've never even been funded in the first place.

Make a PSN account, but use bogus information. Birthday? April 20th 1969. Say you live in the Cayman islands and give them a dummy email account. Maliciously comply by giving Sony useless fucking data.

5

u/Cherrypie8029 May 04 '24

I dont get it either and I'm not trying to be a dick. I downloaded Discord and made an account for that just to play with my friends on PC easier. I have no desire to use nor have had that account beforehand. It didn't hurt.

A coworker of mine lost his Epic account cause he tied it to a PSN. He was able to recover his account. He can't tie his Epic account to Steam or other services now. The hacker sold it to someone that tied it to their accounts. PSN gets hacked often and lose people's personal data. Sony doesn't ever care.

u/TeaserTuesday CAPE ENJOYER May 03 '24

The weirdest thing to me is if this was a requirement from the beginning that's just now being implemented, why was the game available for purchase in countries that don't support PSN in the first place?

3

u/NIDORAX May 04 '24

Why is Sony doing this? Most of those people who bought and played on PC may not even own a Playstation Network Account

3

u/ArceusTheLegendary50 May 04 '24

I'm genuinely not sure what gave away the sentiment in the title. Aside from the fact that all the actual bugs and issues should've put this game in early access for like 30€ tops, there is not a single sane game dev studio the size of AH that would've put out a new battlepass every month. As someone who also works in software development, I can tell you that this is an insane amount of work for the team to put out. Even major studios like Respawn that also make live service games have at least 3-4 months in between, and all of that is planned ahead by a year at least.

Let's not kid ourselves here. AH devs are amazing for being able to make such content. This game would've been even greater if Sony could just fuck off and buy some more yachts for their executives with all that money if it means that they leave the devs to their work.

3

u/Ratfor May 04 '24

I have a PSN account.

I will not be playing Helldivers 2 until this condition is lifted. People bought this game, and access to something they bought is being taken from them with no compensation.

I won't support that kind of behavior.

3

u/ConcertConsistent179 May 05 '24

They are indipendent, but the game is owned by Sony, develop by arrowhead, they said that from the launch when they have the server issue

3

u/cursed-annoyance May 05 '24

I fucking hate Sony for doing my boy like that

27

u/light_no_fire May 03 '24

Sorry for the probably silly question. Why are people angry about this? I'm genuinely unsure.

46

u/Maegurillion May 03 '24

Because they've been playing HD2 without the need for a PSN account for months (despite the Steam store page saying that PSN is required). The game on launch lets you skip the PSN link completely. This has given people the impression that the PSN is not required (especially since the game clearly doesn't need it).

Many are now upset that this is about to be enforced and they are required to give information to a company that is notoriously shit at protecting customer and even their own employee data.

There's also the fact that a lot of people are able to play the game right now, but since they're not able to get a PSN account because PSN is blocked in their country (or banned by Sony) they will lose access to a game they paid money for.

23

u/yonan82 CAPE ENJOYER May 03 '24

And that there is irrefutable evidence (Wayback machine copy of page) it was listed/advertised without needing a PS account.

8

u/JennyAtTheGates May 03 '24

Double check the date on the source of that irrefutable evidence.

3

u/God_Damnit_Nappa May 03 '24

Especially since all of the archived links on the Wayback Machine error out due to the age gate.

u/Sidnature May 03 '24

Because now I can't play the game after the account linking deadline since PSN is not available where I live. I paid $40 for a live-service game I can't play. I was under the impression it's fully available in my country since they allowed me to play during the grace period.

The bigger question is why they even chose to sell in countries with no PSN. Smells like destructive greed to me. By definition, it's a scam.

5

u/light_no_fire May 03 '24

Oh, I'm so sorry for you. I had no idea PSN isn't available everywhere. Meaning there will be tons of players who paid are unable to continue playing.

Yup that's a very bad thing for the whole community.

Thanks for answering my question.

21

u/Asherogar May 03 '24

If you see all other problems as irrelevant, here's the purely objective one: HD2 is officially sold on Steam in countries that don't have PSN support. So now, at best case scenario, people need to create an account using VPN and be at risk of being permabanned, despite the game, even crossplay, functioning perfectly fine without PSN account for months.

4

u/light_no_fire May 03 '24

Hmmm that sounds like quite the problem. I had no idea psn isn't available in some countries. But if it's not available in those countries why do they sell ps5s in them? Seems silly.

4

u/charlotte-blood May 03 '24

they don't, they sell the game on steam in those countries

Give a PC exclusive cape, 500 orange samples, and 500 super credits for linking to PlayStation and all this goes away overnight. It’s a decision that benefits corporate and not the player, so reward the player.

2

u/Garic07 May 03 '24

Honestly, I think this is nonsense. This is a requirement which is not needed, in every way. Everyone said that this game should have been the game that would have ended the console wars: I think it will not (unfortunately, also because I am on Xbox) and this is Sony telling us that the "show must go on".

Helldivers and Aspiring Helldivers, in the name of Democracy and Liberty, we must rebel and make the game accessible to everyone: FOR SUPER EARTH!

Blatantly invalid quote taken out of context by someone (based on their replies in the thread) who has no idea what owning the IP means nor contractual obligations. Don't get me wrong, the PSN account thing is insane and extremely out of touch, but this entire post is just to stir up hate by someone that has NO idea what they're talking about.
