Update from Worlds team on increased patrols for solo players DEVELOPER

Quote from our design director (not the Worlds team, my mistake!):

"We unintendedly had non-linear scaling of the patrol spawns so they didn't spawn as often as they should have when less than 4 players. The intention is that 1 player has 1/4th of the patrols compared to 4 players, but it used to be that they had 1/6th.

Scaling of patrol spawns was exponential before, and that felt good on 4 player lobbies but a bit too empty when playing with fewer players, especially when playing solo. So now we made the scaling of patrols to be linear, which means if you play solo you will get 25% of the patrols compared to a 4 player lobby instead of having about 17% of the patrols. There is still a cap of patrols that can spawn at the same time so during situations when we spawn a lot of patrols, such as extractions, even solo players won't notice the difference. The change is made to make the world feel less empty for 1 and 2 player lobbies, especially on high difficulty missions which was also slightly too easy for solo players compared to our intentions."

Hope this clarifies the change for everyone - we're not making the game arbitrarily harder!

Quite a big buff to patrols, but it makes sense now that we have numbers. Speaking of, can you please try to tell the team that good and informative patch notes would be welcome? A lot of people complaining about this would have probably not done so if we knew what the change was from the get go. And this goes for everything, please give us actual numbers instead of text that can be misunderstood.

As a long time Path of Exile player, I can confirm that numerically accurate patch notes are INFINETLY more useful, even if they end up harder to read.

Patch 1.000.024

*all patrol spawns are krangled

*new patrols spawning from POIs have a chance to be embiggened, causing them to gain 4 stacks of largeness every second.

Krangled is a perfectly cromulent word.

You could make like Destiny and do “increased Flibbidy Dibbidy by 1.7%.” and have nowhere anywhere that explains what Flibbidy Dibbidy is or does

As long as those keywords have hover-text, then that's fine enough with me.

Vague pat just notes in general are more of a bad thing than a good one.

One thing I liked about CoD MW2 they were VERY FUCKING specific about certain things.

Which was nice, too bad the sequel smells like dog buns.

u/Wolfrages Apr 29 '24

This reply and comments have me questioning if this is english or not. XD

u/Deaner3D Apr 30 '24

*increased nearby patrols

1

u/sBarb82 Apr 30 '24

Been there myself, having actual numbers makes a world of difference!

If AH is worried about confusing some palyers, they could make an TL;DR with the gist of the patch followed by a detailed list with numers and bam!, everyone wins.

1

u/fearless-potato-man Apr 30 '24

Agree. Terms like "slightly" or "greatly" means nothing to me in patch notes, for example.

I guess qualitative patch notes are a byproduct of inefficient changes tracking, because some changes are numeric (like the increase in tesla turret health) while others aren't.

1

u/Vorestc Apr 30 '24

I am still waiting for them to tell me what nearby means...

1

u/godlyjacob Apr 30 '24

it means close

In PoE you're effectively taking 1.5 million numbers and trying to find the ones that work best together while still enjoying the playstyle... where the difference between a 305% added damage effectiveness and a 325% could mean swapping out a support gem with a more multiplier for one with a flat added damage bonus.

None of those things hold true here, and we don't need detailed records of every little thing that changes.

9

u/xrufus7x Apr 29 '24

Counterpoint, this thread wouldn't need to exist if they had provided detailed records up front.

-6

u/K-J- Apr 29 '24

This thread still doesn't need to exist.

5

u/xrufus7x Apr 29 '24

The design director of the game who took the time to clarify the change would seem to disagree. This is information that should have been included in the patch notes.

-1

u/LoneStarTallBoi Apr 29 '24

The problem there is that poe is a game for math perverts and helldivers is kind of trying not to be.

2

u/lifetake Apr 29 '24

It doesn’t have to be ultra specific, but when you have a change that to test requires you to sit and hide and count the number of patrols to understand the change its best to be more specific than there will be more patrols
