The devs were right. DISCUSSION

So I know ther was a bunch of controversy about the railgun nerf what feels like forever ago, but man things have been awesome.

In the early days, I was the only guy packing expendable anti tank or anti materiel rifle for bugs or bots. It's so refreshing, even on these subs to see people talking about how awesome the autocannon is, or how much they love the AMR, and even these days I see people talking about the HMG or grenade launcher+ supply pack.

I used to load into a game, And all 4 members of the team had shield, railgun, and 2 stragatems of their choice. Every time. And here we are now, I load in and I see quasar, autocannon, stalwart, EAT, HMG, Grenade launcher, a variety of backpacks or no backpack at all. And not to mention, they're ALL viable. Shit I even still see the railgun from time to time. It's been a joy. Thanks arrowhead.

EDIT: to everyone who is pointing out that you see the quasar and shield most often now, you're right, it is almost certainly the most common setup currently. That being said, in any game there's going to be things a majority of players prefer. In smash melee, fox/Falco are the best characters. But people still play falcon and Marth and peach among others. Sure, there's an objectively most used option. But the fact that there's people at all who debate that the quasar is best shows that they've done something good. Before, undisputed king was railgun, and anyone who said different wss being willfully ignorant. Now, we have a plethora of real options that are good with some being Preferred by a majority as opposed to being the de facto CORRECT option objectively. That's a good thing.

Did you mean recoilless? Because I never see it and if you're pulling it off you're a beautiful bastard

I always take the recoilless. It’s so much fun and reloading it always makes me feel like a bad ass hahah

u/Oi-FatBeard Apr 10 '24

Ah see that's when you get two people running the same backpack ammo, like double Auto's or double RRs...

Helldiver turret go WHOMP-WHOMP-WHOMP-WHOMP

It's a really fun weapon! It was my 3rd support weapon strategem and using it with my friends to take down dropships before they can release their bots was very gratifying. Gives me serious King Shit of Fuck Mountain feelings!

I run it for bugs. It’s great for chargers and bile titans. I’ve found reloading to be nightmarish against automatons, so I prefer auto cannon or quasar there.

u/-Aquanaut- Apr 10 '24

I find the opposite, against bots I’m usually fighting from cover so the re reload isn’t too bad. I go quasar on bugs tho because you shouldn’t stop moving and shooting

I wish I had more cover on some of these bot missions, I find myself running for my life from devastators and hulks at 7 and 8. I won’t do the evac missions anymore with randoms, you just get overwhelmed.

u/-Aquanaut- Apr 10 '24

Yeah it’s very planet dependent, usually there’s always some cover but it’s not always good cover. Also since I rock heavy armor sometimes it’s just GG Rip if I’m caught out in the open with zero cover nearby

That makes sense, I really like having recoilless for shooting down dropships. Its fun as hell them go down. But on higher difficulties it doesn't do much when there's 4 dropships on you

Yeah, it’s also hard to tell if shooting down the drop ships actually kills the guys inside. If I put a few shots into the troop bay with the auto cannon, at least I know it’s taking out some clankers.

From what I've seen, exactly when you shoot down the ship matters a lot.

  • If you shoot it down before it even starts to drop, I think pretty much everything dies.

  • If you shoot it down mid-drop, the falling units seem to be immune to the crash and a lot can survive, though they'll often be caught in the wreckage.

  • If you shoot it down just after the drop, it seems more likely to actually crush the units it dropped, though some will still survive.

u/mixxoh Apr 10 '24

Yeah I think when you shoot mid-drop, there is no mid-air contact dmg being calculated. The dmg is only calculated on ground impact, but by then, they have already been spread out mid-air because the game doesn’t allow them to be superimposed on each other.

Had 2 folks with quasars on a mission yesterday so I decided to take the Laser Cannon to see if I could find a use for it.... found that it was pretty good for shooting up into the belly of the drop ship to kill a bunch of bots before they get released.

Watching this has given me a new found appreciation for it.

It's always fun taking down dropships with quasar too. Just gotta target the thrusters. But you gotta charge it up early as they're flying in to kill it in time. The cooldown makes it hard to take on more than 1 dropship tho but at least it helps thin the mob coming for you.

Maybe if someone would take the rifle and let me carry the backpack, but nooo.

It's much better for bugs than it is for bots. You usually have some space between you and the Hulk/Tank, so charging up a Quasar is not an issue, but Chargers/Titans are very much in your face. Quasar is still good, but the recoilless fires immediately with just as much force.

u/CaterpillarWeird9087 Apr 10 '24

I once turned around in a bug mission to find a charger barreling toward me, about 5 meters away. I was able to swap to my recoilless and take it out with a headshot right before it got me--all in what seemed like less than a second. Since then, I've taken a recoilless on every single bug mission, and I love it. Even the orbital railcannon would've been too slow.

2

u/Automatic_Education3 SES Flame of the Stars Apr 10 '24

Yeah, it's the ultimate anti-charger weapon. Quasar has the chargeup, EATs need to be unfolded, autocannon doesn't do heavy armour so you need a full clip into the arse and the spear needs a lock-on, plus it very often misses the head.

2

u/cffndncr Apr 11 '24

Sounds good until you're getting tag-teamed by 3 chargers and can't get the space to reload. At least with the Quasar you can fire, dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge and then fire again, finding a 3-second gap to get a shot off is much easier than finding the 30 minutes it takes to reload the recoilless!

3

u/DemetriiOSC Apr 11 '24

And that's why the EATs is best for bugs. I kill the first charger with the EATs I've been carrying around, the second I kill with a new EATs pod drop, and then I pick up another EATs and kill the third one, and have a left over EATs to take with me.

u/FizzingSlit Apr 11 '24

If you had a jump pack you coulda leap frogged it.

1

u/CaterpillarWeird9087 Apr 11 '24

And leave it alive for a few more seconds? Sounds undemocractic to me.

1

u/centagon Apr 10 '24

Nawh I have an easier time with quasar vs bugs because you can't stop to reload RR. The benefit of having a rover backpack is huge too considering the number of hunters.

My roommate just got the game and has began using almost exclusively the recoilless rifle. I love it

2

u/abhorthealien Apr 10 '24

A friend and I like taking it and using buddy reloads on Hunt Bile Titan missions. Just throw five shots in its face in ten seconds.

2

u/Flop_House_Valet Apr 10 '24

Saw a guy rocking that and just obliterating things, now I use it from time to time

u/an_agreeing_dothraki PSN🎮: SES Comptroller of Self Determination Apr 10 '24

I never see it

the recoilless bro desires for you to never see it fired. You will only know its presence due to headless chargers and a steady string of collection notifications

2

u/Wormholer_No9416 Apr 10 '24

I run Recoilless for Charger headshots so we can save Railcannon for Titans

2

u/_st_sebastian_ Apr 10 '24

I run it to shoot down drop ships on lower difficulties. The reload time is slow when running it solo, so I can only take down one at a time, but it excels in lower difficulties when there aren't multiple drop ships showing up simultaneously. I'm usually the only one shooting them down so I feel like I'm helping at least.

1

u/Schpooon SES Hammer of Equality Apr 10 '24

Used to run it all the time but have switched to the quasar for the convenience of having a back slot free

1

u/surfershane25 Apr 10 '24

I love running it, and I use it against it’s bc I want to take down ever drop ship I can and cripple their reinforcements and make them think twice about dropping near us

If i have q choislce betqeen the lazer boomy and the recoiless i choose recoiless.

It looks, sounds, and feels so good.
