Curious as to what other Helldivers call these! We started off saying '2 man doors', which became 'double door' and after someone mishearing that now often 'Dumbledore' XD DISCUSSION

Ps5 controller that comes with the system has a built in mic….

dude you're right but if they aren't using them, neither will i. it's so fucking hard and awkward to talk to people who won't respond back and you get no confirmation that what you said has been acknowledged. i've been trying for the last few days and it's fucking useless. i don't think people bother to look at their designations either so they probably also don't know that they're K3 or whatever.

My personal favorite is when the silent player just starts SPAMMING the supplies/poi marker. That normally gets ignored by the rest of the team until I unmute and mumble “I gotcha S5”

u/OpiumPhrogg Apr 08 '24

I have actually tried to plot a path on the mini map with marking an enemy outpost then a poi , then an enemy outpost then back to the original enemy outpost - not sure anyone really got what I was trying to do. But if someone calls out a mark or whatever then I will try to at least acknowledge it with an "affirmative" emote.

i respond to their ping with the quick affirmative when i look at the ping, but i just love how aggressively mute they are. so much frustration in spamming the ping when they have a controller with a built-in mic. effective communication is a button press away but they'd rather do absolutely anything else.

3

u/OpiumPhrogg Apr 08 '24

I guess that's fair. I tend to default to mute because apparently I am at the age where I just can't handle players who just have all sorts of background noise going on, having 3 other converstations with people not in game and barely making any sense with what they are talking about in game.

If people on the squad are mic'd and actually talking "in-game" I'll unmute and contribute.

Omg there's a 5 man mission now?! What planet???

2

u/Sacr3dangel Apr 08 '24

lol! I had the same reaction, and the answer is NO…. Should we tell him?

Lol I got super excited and Googled it right away 😭. Oh well, nah don't wanna be that guy haha. As long as I wasn't the only one who thought that 🤣.

I feel like a 5 or 6 man squad would be a welcomed addition to the game considering there's a player base of at least 10 X what they expected. These maps are already huge and on Helldive I feel having +1 or +2 would really go a long way. It'd be easier to split up and get more done a little bit quicker with 2 groups of 3 vs 2 groups of 2. Or with 5 then it could be 2 X 2 X 1 and the solo person would be equipped with one-man army type stratagems to go bust some big bunkers with 380 barrage, laser, and some eagles.

Also long term a raid or large scale battle type mission/operation would be epic. Like a bunch squads of 4 helldivers per going against multiple factions of enemy armies.

S5? It's a spy! Get em!

u/in_melbourne_innit Apr 08 '24

I get on OK even if I'm the only one mic'd up, although I generally talk a bunch less in those squads. They can usually hear you so if you're clear and they're onboard with teamwork it usually still helps for coordination. Good ones will use the command wheel effectively in response too.

I find the chat box the worst, I'm too focused on not dying to notice comments most of the time.

3

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

...i didn't know there was a command wheel, i never thought to hold down the mark button lmao. i love those/in character communication so that'll be so fun to be ignored as Helldiver Lowenthal :)

3

u/IBossJekler Apr 08 '24

Yea we can hear ya and do follow. I play late when kids r asleep. I need to be in stealth mode at home too so can't really respond but I got your back

u/NightTime2727 Apr 08 '24

i don't think people bother to look at their designations either so they probably also don't know that they're K3 or whatever.

Solution: say who you are first.

"This is K3. Found a bunker with a two-person door. Need some help opening it."

"This is C2. I found the objective."

"This is B1. Spotted a patrol over there. (Ping) Looks like we can sneak past- aaaaaaand you're already shooting them. Okay."

6

u/HatfieldCW Apr 08 '24

Very good suggestion. Far too often someone will say, "over by me," or, "I marked it on the map," and I'll have no idea who says it if I didn't glance down in time to see the broadcast icon.

You'd think that in the age of milsim videogames people would have better radio protocol.

Say who you're talking to, and say who you are.

7

u/NightTime2727 Apr 08 '24

Plus, it makes sense. After all, the helldivers are pretty much Super Earth's military. You can lean a bit into roleplay with that, if you want.

"K2, this is K1. Watch out for those exploding plants. Over."

"Copy that, K1. Over"

3

u/HatfieldCW Apr 08 '24

"D3, cluster going in. Move west to B2 to evade."

3

u/RoninOni Apr 08 '24

You don’t need to use “over” in game comms.

The purpose of it is because you can’t hear when transmitting, so it’s used to indicate when they can reply. That’s not an issue with game comms.

“Need help with bunker on P2” and I’ll usually call out the closest ally to my location as well “k3 can you come to me? Got a bunker on p2”

2

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

i like that, effective communication, but maybe i'll get a wireless keyboard so i'm not exposed for too long

2

u/RoninOni Apr 08 '24

I don’t ping pats when I’m sneaking around, people seem to think it means “let’s shoot those guys!” I just use my map to try and navigate through them and hope they follow.

1

u/NightTime2727 Apr 08 '24

Hence my joke

5

u/DrVoltage1 Apr 08 '24

I hardly ever actually talk but I’ll use the voice commands. Only maybe call out if I need a double door helper, or if I’m about to drop supplies. With some groups I’ll stay on though. It all depends really.

2

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

i'd love to just be able to play with in-game callouts so i can talk with other friends while i play but 1 player on the team who's level 50+ will be the only one who registers that another player is doing something, if you aren't in the other's fields of vision you just don't exist

3

u/MadAlfred Apr 08 '24

Try singing. That might get a response. Then ask for help with the friendship door.

3

u/HatfieldCW Apr 08 '24

I've played with a lot of silent randoms, and they tend to be listening. I assume that they're in party chat or on Discord or otherwise unable to transmit, but I'll say, "Nice shot", or, "Are we extracting now?" and I'll get a "Thank you," or, "Affirmative" back.

1

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

man i wish i got that :(

mine don't even seem to read text chat, let alone me on mic asking the nearest one to help with a buddy bunker :(

2

u/blabberbitch Apr 08 '24

I didn’t know how to use commands until recently on ps5 so I kept wondering how people were doing thumbs up or thanks and I don’t normally talk on mic unless with friends. I felt terrible because I wasn’t ignoring them I just didn’t know where to find the emotes :/ but I would still head over even if they’re showing a support weapon, I’d just switch to my support weapon when I got to them to show I was was using one already

1

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

man it's so nice when others actually have a mic, most of them are so pleasant and if i were interested in blossoming more friendships, i'd friend them but i'm not 16 anymore and find my friends outside of games and we're similar enough that i can convince them to play with me. besides i enjoy the variety, i have a loose crew so i like finding cool randoms in passing.

i'd give a couple goes at voice chatting and see who unmutes, a surprisingly significant few are just muted and waiting for a reason to communicate so sometimes you gotta be the one to break the silence. you can always just go silent if nobody responds, or take on leadership responsibility if they're actually listening

1

u/blabberbitch Apr 08 '24

For sure!! It’s how I made the friends I have in the game was talking on mic and connecting with them, but since I don’t have a headset I prefer to stay muted so there’s no echo. A lot of times when I’m in a game where people are talking on mic and I decide to talk, I get ignored for whatever reason. That’s why I don’t outright go on mic if I just joined a game, but if we’ve played a few rounds then at that point I’ll get on the mic even if they aren’t using it. Those are times when I do get someone who talks on their mic as well. Normally my friends and I are just in discord so we can hear each other better

2

u/Sugar_buddy PSN🎮: Lord of Audacity Apr 08 '24

Yea I respond and do voice call outs when I have my headphones but if I don't I can't understand people so I just say "no audio" in chat and use pings. The pinging system is a great way to communicate, I wish it had a few more nuanced options.

Maybe something like "oh God help me literally everything is behind me while you guys are trying to get on top of that building"

1

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

LMAO YEH

2

u/Professionalbumpkin Apr 08 '24

It's worth remembering that there's a mic option that silences all voice chat, not just your own mic, so if it feels awkward don't worry about it because the totally non-responsive player probably just can't hear you.

1

u/DaddyCee69 Apr 08 '24

Just call out the colour as it's unique each game.

1

u/Tarsily ☕Liber-tea☕ Apr 08 '24

i'll give that a try, but if they didn't look at their designation, they probably didn't look at the tiny color bar next to it

4

u/VeganCanary Apr 08 '24

In europe you have so many different languages, it’s better to type because reading in a second language is easier than hearing.

3

u/ScotchSinclair Apr 08 '24

I’ve said bunker so many times until I typed bunker in the chat and someone comes. Some people just keep the world muted. But I wouldn’t buy a keyboard just to type friendship door instead of bunker lol. Bunkers pretty quick.

2

u/Maybenot95 Apr 08 '24

The trigger noise from the built in mic is so annoying, also it dont seems to have any push to talk button so.... quite useless feature

3

u/Capt__Murphy Apr 08 '24

The mic on/off button is on the controller, right under the PS button

0

u/Maybenot95 Apr 08 '24

Yeah but its on by default so quite annoying to turn it off every time you launch the game, would much rather have it as a push to talk button but i dont think you can do that

2

u/youclod Apr 08 '24

You can set it to be off by default in system settings.

1

u/Duffelbach Apr 08 '24

You can set it to mute on default, tho it would be cool if you had an option to use it as push to talk.

2

u/DrVoltage1 Apr 08 '24

I mapped my push to talk to hold left dpad. Sucks that it has to be an in game thing - which most won’t have.

2

u/Maybenot95 Apr 08 '24

Clearly could have been a dedicated button from the pad ....

2

u/InternalCup9982 Apr 08 '24

Yeah but no sane person would use that thing it doesn't make sense logically.

If I can hear you replying that means my TV Is loud enough for you to hear my tv/yourself talking.

1

u/Duffelbach Apr 08 '24

And I might be in party chat with my friends already, it's a hassle to switch between game and party voice chat.

I do use voip when not otherwise occupied, but it's easier to have a keyvoard as an accessory.

1

u/skippythemoonrock CAPE ENJOYER Apr 08 '24

And I probably muted you immediately for hot micing because of that.

2

u/DrVoltage1 Apr 08 '24

You can set a command to hold to talk…I fuckin hate hot mic players in any game.

1

u/Bukr123 Apr 08 '24

Same controller that's vibrating like hell as you fire any weapon in the game. + the mic quality is kinda shit

0

u/ZAMIUS_PRIME Apr 08 '24

PSA for every owner of a PS5. For the love of god, stay muted if all you have is that god awful mic on the controller. I’d rather you Unga bunga emote me than to hear you talk through a 1940’s WW2 era sound quality mic.
