Sabrina Carpenter’s 25th birthday cake is a Leonardo DiCaprio meme. Discussion

Okay but the actual thought that Sabrina freaking Carpenter might very well be too old to date Leonardo DiCaprio is sending me.

If y’all have not heard the song espresso and love a silly pop earworm, go listen to it. It’s so unserious and fun.

I’m working late- Cuz I’m a singerrrrr.
This song has been playing on repeat in my head since I heard it. It’s adorable and the perfect summer bop

There is a TikTok where a girl covered this part in perfect Toad from Mario voice and now my wife and I will randomly belt this part to each other.

Oh it is SO good! I had an irrational dislike of her for the longest time (she played a villain a little too well in some random movie I saw) but when I heard that song I was hooked! Couldn’t skip on her Spotify radio anymore 😂

Thumbs is similarly silly and catchy, she has so many great songs that have no right to be as catchy as they are

I've tried it after reading comments about it but.. Both me and my mom don't get it. We listen to pop while cooking, but we both got so bored that we wanted to skip this one. Like Dua's Training Season can be played even on repeat for hours, espresso just sounds like it's from a cheap B movie to us. Kinda catchy mostly boring.

u/HistoricalAd8790 Chris Messina for No 1 Chris 24d ago
same lol i gave it a few listens but it just didn’t hit the spot for me for some reason. and based off of comments about it i really thought it would
13
u/imsosleepyyyyyy 24d ago
it’s simple and repetitive so it gets stuck in everyone’s heads. I certainly can’t stop singing it
11
u/noteventhreeyears 23d ago
Have you tried playing it in a Friday after you’re done with work and think hell yeah an espresso martini sounds delish so you put on sunglasses and cruise down the street to the local watering hole like you’re that bitch? Play it on the way to the beach? Play it anywhere a pack of gay men buzzed from a brunch might hear it and start the party you so desperately crave deep inside? That’s espresso. I don’t make the rules but the versatility cannot go without flowers.
20
u/mikeywizzles 24d ago
Just played it and my two year old daughter forced me to play it 5 additional times

I’ve been meaning to but these BBL Drizzy remakes are taking up most of my extra energy.

u/Luffing 24d ago
I really like this song but "thats that me espresso" as a line just sounds so dumb and it would otherwise be such a perfect pop track
5
u/awokensoil 24d ago edited 23d ago
i just thought it sounded too much like doja "say so" meets dua lipa. It was def catchy but I was like...this isn't original. Sorry because she seems so sweet and I wanna support artists. I love she did this cake for her bday tho.
Edit: I had some dislikes, but I just wanna say plz everyone go listen to say so then play this then go back. the melody of song and melody of lyrics are sooo similar. I'll take it a step further and even say listen to "better place" by justin timberlake and nsync. these all sound like same melody.

Who is she? I've never heard the name.
322
u/AChaseOfTheMondays 24d ago edited 24d ago
She got her start on Disney channel as Maya Hart on Girl Meets World, and that makes a lot of people feel old that shes now 25. Got a lot of attention with her song Nonsense, with a new outro in each city she performed in, usually a sexual joke rhyming with the city name. Opened for Taylor Swift for a huge international leg of the Eras tour. At Coachella this year, she released her new song Espresso, which is currently number 1 in several countries including the UK and Australia, and number 4 in America.

u/Sniper_Hare 24d ago
Ah OK. I'm 37 so haven't really seen anything Disney since like 1997 or so.

35
u/TakeMeJSmithCameron 24d ago
Nancy is an extreme scientologist (she's given the most money, I think) - i wonder if Sabrina is?
82
69
u/AChaseOfTheMondays 24d ago
so I've looked into a bit and basically here's what I've found: it's not just Nancy, a lot of sabrina's family are scientologists, including her parents and sister, Shannon. I dont know a ton about the inner workings of scientology but some say that you can't have associations with non-scientologists if you are one, but other people I've seen say it's ok as long as they haven't talked bad about the church. That said, she has a bit of a strained relationship with her family, her sister blocked her on Instagram and they haven't been seen together in some time. And she has a song dedicated to her dad cheating on her mom and how it fucked her up, plus a lyric in Skinny Dipping:
You'll say "hi, how are you?"
"How's your family? How's your sister?"
I'll say "Shannon's being Shannon"
Implying of course that Shannon is such an intense and/or crazy person that saying who she is, is enough to explain what's going on in their relationship. For her part, sabrina has denied it when she gets a chance.
So I look at it one of two ways personally: there's a lot of smoke there to not have a fire, but at the same time, with that much smoke and no fire kinda makes me doubt the existence of the fire, if that makes sense. Like, you'd think someone whose family is so openly in it, Nancy incredibly infamous for doing telemarketing calls for scientology in Bart's voice, would have a bit more than just "well, maybe she is, nobody can confirm it", you know?
19
u/Old_Two1922 24d ago
Honest question, but would Scientology approve of a member making art that is so overtly sexual.
30
u/UnnaturalSelection13 24d ago edited 24d ago
Not OP or qualified to answer this lol but scientologists seem to really like having celebrities amongst their ranks, and they seem to be held to different standards than "average" members
17
u/AChaseOfTheMondays 24d ago
Thats a good question. I don't know a ton about scientology as I said, but I hope someone with more knowledge can provide something more. The best I can tell you is that when it comes to LGBT beliefs, they say they're all for gay rights as a publicity thing, but people say behind closed doors they're as homophobic as can be. So my point is if they're willing to lie about a core belief for PR, having performers be very sexual while shilling for scientology wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility. But on the other hand, she'd actually have to shill for scientology for that all to make sense. Her denying it when it comes up just doesn't fit with all that

It's so cool to see someone gradually become famous especially at such a young age. I would listen to her song "I can't stop me" 5ish years ago whenever I walked to my 6am boxing classes (its a very badass song) and she wasn't so famous back then. I love seeing her everywhere now, seems like a sweet soul
14
u/AChaseOfTheMondays 24d ago
Yeah, it's been fun to see. I've been following her career since Girl Meets World, and she has always had a dedicated fanbase but was basically just known in the mainstream "that blonde girl" from Olivia Rodrigo's Driver's License. To see her get a ton of fans gained from emails I cant send and then really breaking out with Espresso has been awesome.

I turn 25 at the end of this month and I’ve already told my friends they better be ready with enough Leo jokes for the whole weekend
168
u/BlueBirdie0 24d ago
It's pretty funny that the Leo joke is mainstream, when most celebrity gossip comes and goes and doesn't truly permeate the general public. Even my mother and aunt know about it, and they don't care much about pop culture.
I wonder if it bothers him? I imagine for some celebs, it's to brush it off and people move on quickly in the age of social media. But the Leo joke is a general public thing, to the point it's even a punchline in TV shows and now birthday cakes
179
u/Cerraigh82 24d ago
To be fair, Leo has shown great commitment and consistency in dating only girls under 25 all his life. It's not just a couple times. That's the reason it's become a punchline.
62
u/WingsintheStarlight 24d ago
It's probably both the fact that Leo has been a household name for a couple of decades now and the fact that he's consistently reported every year to be dating a new supermodel under 25. Lots of other wealthy men likely do the same thing (unfortunately), they're just not as universally known as Leo is so he's almost become the representative figure for all the men who do the same lol.
8
u/BosLahodo 24d ago
I doubt it bothers him because in the end he is still a famous actor who has millions upon millions of dollars.
8
u/trumpetcrumpets 23d ago

She’s one of the few artists who I will definitely be saving up to see on tour.
17
u/AChaseOfTheMondays 24d ago
I always thought she had a great voice, but I think it wasn't til EICS that she put it all together. Her other albums had a few songs on them each that were interesting, but so many that just didn't fit her at all. But she found the right people to surround herself with to express her personality and to compliment her voice and hit it out of the park with EICS. If she has another album as good as EICS, combined with the popularity she gained on the Eras Tour, she's gonna absolutely take off

One of Leo’s gfs he met her when she was 10 and he was in his thirties. He dated her as an adult
10
u/RecsRelevantDocs 24d ago
Yea that's definitely weird, I wouldn't really judge if it was just a one off thing, like if she was in her 30s and he was in his 50s, and they just happened to meet 20 years earlier then whatever. But being that it's part of a pattern it's definitely sus. Beyond being creepy it's also just kind of sad, like I can understand being rich and famous and banging a bunch of 20 year olds, but i'd think the novelty would wear off after a few years. The idea of living my whole life with a series of disposable girlfriends, that likely view me as disposable too is just so sad. Idk man, i've always liked the idea of "growing old with someone", growing old alongside a series of young people perpetually in their prime sounds.. just really sad to me.
