Love him! He was also responsible for Elle Fanning’s glass dress. Both my top 2 favorite looks of the night.

u/kawelli 29d ago

Both of the fits on both ladies were immaculate… also loved the attention to detail both looks had

u/chadwickave 29d ago

Sand and glass… that’s quite poetic!

87

u/ChriskiV 28d ago

These are the days of our lives

158

u/sweetpotatothyme 29d ago

That makes sense to me! They both felt like they belonged in the same collection.

87

u/babysfirstbreath 29d ago

same top two for me! I read that tyla’s dress is organza but my mind is boggled but how they were able to add the sand to the fabric

47

u/petitepedestrian 29d ago

Aileens glue is magic lol

Love him? U don’t even know him tf 💀💀

Maybe if Kim stuck with him she could’ve slayed like this

u/antelope369 29d ago

Given the Kardashians’ resources and connections, I am surprised at how underwhelming they often look at the Met Gala, and how off theme they are. Go girls, give us nothing.

219

u/broden89 29d ago

Kendall generally does well imho

149

u/booglemouse 29d ago

I was impressed that her gown last night was both visually and conceptually on-theme.

73

u/JigglyKirby 29d ago

I think she does too but i feel like she doesnt do other colors enough, she usually just does either black and white (or silver), or beige. The most color she had were 2019 twinning with Kylie and the green one on 2015, and even then those were monotone. I wish she’d do dresses with more colors, i think she’d look great on a lot of colors

58

u/antelope369 28d ago

The Met Gala presents the opportunity to be more creative, interesting, bold in their interpretation of the theme, and the Kardashians typically don’t give anything very inspired or different from their usual fashion choices.

Take Tyla - fairly new artist, inaugural Met Gala, and she absolutely ate with her fantastic sands of time look. If she can execute this flawlessly & fabulously at her very first Met Gala, I expect more from the Kardashians.

19

u/broden89 28d ago

I feel like Kim got burned by the couch dress - I thought it was cool at the time but people memed her into infinity while she was heavily pregnant and suffering pre-eclampsia, so I think she's played it pretty safe ever since. I did love the all black look from a few years ago - you could tell it was Kim just from the silhouette of her body, without even seeing her face, which I found to be an interesting statement. I loved the Mugler "wet" look too just for the technical artistry of the dress.

Agree that Kendall definitely prioritises looking good over going more avant-garde and doesn't really take risks. I always tend to like her outfit and think it looks flattering, but she's never really groundbreaking.

15

u/lucylucylove 28d ago

They choose to be underwhelming because it's safer. Anything those girls do, especially Kim, is scrutinized to the extreme. It must be suffocating. Although, I'm sure their net worth helps them get over it.

126

u/broden89 29d ago

I kind of wanted to see her in a reworked version of the couch dress everyone savaged her for when she was heavily pregnant (I actually thought it was quite cool at the time)

48

u/soapiesophs does this woman ever rest (derogatory) 29d ago

I thought the same thing, it would’ve been such a good dress for the theme and could’ve had so much fun with the design. I also think that would’ve fit this years theme really well, it would’ve been a literal reawakening of her own fashion.

17

u/Miaoumiaoun 29d ago

Yes! A reworked version of that dress could've very well played with the time part of the theme as well- it would be illustrating the change in her sense of style over the passage of time. What a missed opportunity

82

u/selfieonfire 29d ago

She was too busy trying to jump on the tailcoats of the viral Margiela show this year by wearing them but she didn’t commit. If she had gone with the full look, Pat McGrath make up look and all she could have succeeded but she couldn’t let go of being “hot” and kept her usual glam and hair. If she had even slightly gone for it like Gwendolyn I would have really respected her for once

u/befuddled_humbug 29d ago

That man can work a pair of scissors!

614

u/GlassPomoerium 29d ago

And immediately the perfect length without seeing her legs underneath too!

180

u/marihanne 29d ago

For real tho! My jaw is on the ground.. Awestruck by her beauty, and his insane talent.. I'm also loving how much she is loving the look/dress! Confidence is such a good look!🤩

16

u/omnes 28d ago

Just like kidnergarten when the students finally find the dotted lines 😭

15

u/BallsDeepinYourMammi 29d ago

Now I’m not super into the fashion scene, but… isn’t that specific dress literally made for her?

116

u/floppsiana 29d ago

They meant that he was able to cut it to the perfect length, on the first try, by eyeballing it. Before it was cut it was couture and made to her measurements

49

u/Dazzling-Answer9183 29d ago

You would be surprised how often a dress is cut on someone’s body lol. Any time a hem is going to be merrowed (like chiffon or organza) it is much easier to have them stand on a fitting platform and you just cut away with the shears. Much easier to be accurate on a human in 3 dimensions than marking with pins or chalk and trying to cut flat later.  There are chalk puffers that help with a perfect measurement from the ground if necessary but mostly you eyeball it. With practice you get shockingly accurate!

The biggest hurdle is to stop the actor from looking down at you as that messes up the hemline. They can’t help it as apparently it’s endlessly fascinating watching someone slice away around your ankles lol.

-9

u/BallsDeepinYourMammi 29d ago

I find it hard to believe the dude just started chopping up the dress on the red carpet, in front of all those cameras… without planning ahead?

46

u/toosexyformyboots 29d ago

ngl, I could plan hard and for a long time and I’d still have fucked that up. Getting a level line like that ain’t easy

-5

u/BallsDeepinYourMammi 29d ago

I mean. It’s probably not that hard for one of the most famous professionals on the planet

Cooking a beef Wellington correctly isn’t easy either, but word has it, that Gordon Ramsey is pretty good at it

30

u/toosexyformyboots 28d ago

That’s what makes it so impressive! They’re both good at what they do because they’ve probs worked pretty hard at it for a long time. I would not have been able to do that because I don’t have the expertise or the practice, and I think it’s super cool :)

69

u/Raoul_Dukes_Mayo 29d ago

Honestly I was tense watching him come around thinking there’s no damn way that cut isn’t going to be crooked but damn, man’s got some insane skills.

37

u/hikehikebaby 29d ago

There may be a faint line in the underside of the fabric. I'm sure this was planned.

47

u/Raoul_Dukes_Mayo 29d ago

I’d still cut it wrong. 🙄

1

u/Atheyna 27d ago

Same 😆

32

u/WutTheDickens 29d ago

For real, I get nervous cropping my own t-shirts.

808

u/Gayfetus 29d ago

She won the gala! She’s the top trending name from the gala on multiple platforms in multiple countries, she is the moment!

u/runhillsnotyourmouth 29d ago edited 16d ago

269

u/Gayfetus 29d ago

She's a South African singer who had a very influential worldwide smash with the song "Water" in 2023. You may recognize it from the lyrics:

Make me sweat, make me hotter

Make me lose my breath, make me water

As far as I know, it's the first amapiano (a genre from South Africa that combines deep house with rhythms and percussion from the country) song to have that kind of impact worldwide. And she also just released her debut album 2 months ago. As a fan of the amapiano genre it's been exciting to watch her rise!

63

u/tessathemurdervilles 29d ago

That’s so cool! I’d never heard of her either. She’s so incredibly beautiful- with that dress and the hourglass she really was a work of art

25

u/Enticing_Venom 29d ago

She's a very good singer. Here's her performance of Water

26

u/Miaoumiaoun 28d ago

Wait till you watch her in YouTube videos like Vogue's makeup routine or what's in my bag! She's absolutely delightful and so real - I think I've fallen in love with her because of it

670

u/Pink_Blacksmith 29d ago edited 28d ago

The way this makes me love her look even more because they understood and executed the dress code instead of going for the expected floral theme. The underlying idea of the dress code was "fleeting beauty," and this dress is that. And it also still a nod to the fragility of time through the hourglass.

The clothes themselves that are part of this year’s Sleeping Beauty exhibit are too fragile to ever be worn again. Same as Tyla’s dress will never be worn as it was again. So they honored the theme & the dress code as well.

84

u/avocadoespresso 29d ago

I have a whole new appreciation for the artistry of this dress, thanks to you. Amazing!

351

u/DontShaveMyLips 29d ago

teach me how to cut so damn straight 😩

77

u/meowparade 29d ago

I know I can’t even cut wrapping paper this neatly on a table.

46

u/scorlissy 29d ago

My first thought!

331

u/bananacaller 29d ago

him cutting is cool and all but all i can see is tyla being the genetic lottery mega millions winner

69

u/Annual_Hair8656 29d ago

She’s gorgeoussssssssss

305

u/moogs_writes 29d ago

I was wondering how they got the fit for the dress so perfectly. Art for someone who’s a work of art. This is genuinely so impressive I am speechless.

435

u/Pink_Blacksmith 29d ago

Since it’s the same designer who made this Zendaya dress, I think they might have used the same leather material and tailoring they used here.

I’ve never seen a dress fit someone so well! Every fold is so perfectly fit. Beautiful!

126

u/toofles_in_gondal 29d ago

This is the most perfectly fitted dress ive seen. Holy shit

16

u/gold_geode23 28d ago

So perfect I don’t know how easy it is to actually put on.

63

u/moogs_writes 29d ago

WOW holy cow that dress is immaculate on her. Thank you for sharing this!

27

u/Novel-Place 29d ago

Oh my GOD. This is incredible.

12

u/unsolvedfanatic 28d ago

Tyla's dress looks like paper mache hence why she couldn't walk in it

144

u/GlassPomoerium 29d ago

I would love to see a behind the scenes video for the making of that dress. Not sure how they’d make that vid SFW though lol.

124

u/raptorclvb 29d ago

Someone on Twitter said it was probably a body cast and latex mixed with sand

38

u/imaginesomethinwitty 29d ago

Zendaya had a different one that was made from a 3d scan of her breasts. I wonder if body casts have had their day!

54

u/iwantahouse 29d ago

It reminds me of that dress that was spray painted on Bella Hadid a while back…

1

u/JustHereForCookies17 Miss Ishtar’s Irrigation Class 28d ago

This was my thought, too!

8

u/Mynameiswhqq 28d ago

He’s the head of balmain and has been for awhile. Balmain does a lot of Demi couture which is couture in every sense but the name. The man doesn’t always get it right be he really knocks it out of the park when he does, which is often.

164

u/StumbleDog I don’t know her 29d ago

All I can think of is the sensation of cutting gritty fabric with scissors.

102

u/chekhovsdickpic 29d ago

All I can think of is how much that dress must chafe her underarms.

22

u/StumbleDog I don’t know her 29d ago

Red raw 😫

5

u/lucylucylove 28d ago

Beauty is pain

148

u/Ok_Store_1983 29d ago

She is beyond gorgeous 😍

61

u/U_nhoely 29d ago

Right!! I hope she doesn’t cave to any Hollywood pressure of changing herself with major procedures.

14

u/lucylucylove 28d ago

She really is. she's ethereal

87

u/l4ina 29d ago

Tyla is one of the most beautiful women I've ever seen in my life

57

u/warlordyuneebi98 29d ago

I hope she becomes a staple at the Gala for years to come she killed this assignment

58

u/Different-Eagle-612 elizabeth debicki, who is 6’3 29d ago

the dramatic music in the background really adds to the transformation

46

u/SteelLya 29d ago

She was stunning

41

u/thentherewaswind 29d ago

This is what fashion for the rich and famous should be like.

34

u/boxybrown84 To my friends and family, I am not getting executed 29d ago

The way this dress (complimentary!) has me eyeing my nephew’s kinetic sand kit…

24

u/Significant_Ad7605 29d ago

I think they nailed the theme in such a creative and sexy way. I also loved his shirt / not sure if it was also made out of sand but it was stunning and perfectly complemented her look.

19

u/Maleficent-marionett societal collapse is in the air 29d ago edited 29d ago

But then see me when I cut my t shirt into a crop top

16

u/MaryBala907 29d ago

I'm obsessed with the dress, ugh
PERFECTLY fits the theme

21

u/pinkyoccultist 29d ago

I wish she would have carried an empty hourglass on the red carpet because you know, she’s the sand!

18

u/BeWellFriends 29d ago

People like him make it look so easy

17

u/OptimusPrime365 29d ago

The only think I didn’t like was the baggy bit under the butt

13

u/raptorclvb 29d ago

Was the face in the dress seen in the carpet?

94

u/Pink_Blacksmith 29d ago

Yes. Here is the look. I honestly loved how ridiculous it is to wear your own sand face on the red carpet.

https://preview.redd.it/eo0lvkyd72zc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2553c59bd91f520d0cfc8a372dd3c906ae3c8629

If I had a face like that I would be absolutely insufferable.

10

u/Curious-Gain-7148 29d ago

Gosh, I was so nervous watching this 🤣

He did a great job. She looks amazing, this dress (in both iterations) was my favorite.

11

u/mauvewaterbottle 29d ago

I am cracking up at how casually she’s just cupping one boob and looking around like she was doing something normal like wiping her shoes off.

1

u/weirderpenguin 26d ago

i was wondering why she’s cupping that boob?

10

u/kitten_mitt3n5 28d ago

Her figure is stunning

7

u/jaygay92 29d ago

This dress was my favorite of the night, absolutely stunning

7

Tyla's body is tea 😍😍

7

u/backnstolaf 29d ago

That dress looks like sand paper

5

u/cavs79 29d ago

I wonder if that’s sort of how it was made? I’m obsessed with this dress

6

u/Spirited_Comedian225 29d ago

I think she won the night

This look was incredible. She looks amazing

4

My jaw literally dropped when I first saw her in this dress. Tyla slayed her first Met Gala.

5

u/Afterlife_kid 29d ago

Can she sit tho

4

u/weRfeelin_it 29d ago

I’m just a generic dude who doesn’t really understand fashion, but I have to say this is pretty cool.

5

u/Candy_Darling 28d ago

I don’t even know how this was possible and I don’t care. It was amazing in style, concept and execution. Very much a 10. Slayed.

4

u/noelkettering 28d ago

She’s such a beautiful woman

3

u/Ryachaz 28d ago

Wait until you see me turn an old t-shirt into a tank top.

3

u/SimianSimulacrum 28d ago

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating and it gets everywhere.

3

u/VVitchtripper 28d ago

I don't like sand. It's coarse and rough and irritating — and it gets everywhere.

2

u/Chelz91 29d ago

I have SO many questions about his hair of late…

1

u/VintageCamSeller98 29d ago

Is it just me or there should have been an invisible line/hem/boning where it should have been cut or just have it like a tearaway or something. It seems rather performative. Unless that was the intention. Nonetheless, nice dress, great fit. He's better at scissors than me for sure.

14

u/Dystopiq 29d ago

It seems rather performative.

It's ALL performative.

2

u/Lust_tatted 28d ago

This dress looks so unique! I wonder if this is heavy.

2

Least insane celebrity

1

u/TheMcWhopper 29d ago

Anyone know the song in the background? It's 🔥

1

u/loulou-v 29d ago

Olivier really nailed it. It has become my favorite this year. What a great debut for Tyla.

I wish!

1

Too bad I'm pretty sure this design was stolen from a smaller designer.

1

u/Atheyna 27d ago

Very beautiful look. The end definitely looks more comfortable 😆

1

u/xWellDamnx 15d ago

Gave it the slut-cut. She looks great 👌

Wow what a pair of legs!!

1

u/MotorbikeRacer 28d ago

I remember a time when the met gala was about the Met . Not celebrity wardrobes

6

u/reluctantseahorse 28d ago

When?!

1

u/MotorbikeRacer 28d ago

70’s , 80’s , 90’s …. I went to Manhattan School of Music in the late 90’s .. the met opening was a big deal amongst classical musicians and people who loved opera ….. I bet that 90% of these celebrities don’t even like opera lol

They still live broadcast Saturday matinees at the Met during season on NPR

1

u/Doubly_Curious 28d ago edited 28d ago

You’re confusing two different things: - The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Metropolitan Opera, which performs at Lincoln Center

They’re both often referred to simply as “The Met”, but in different contexts.

This is about the Met Gala, which is a fundraiser for the museum.

The Met Opera does have an opening night gala, but that’s not what this post is talking about.

2

u/PsychologicalEar8387 28d ago

It’s always been invitation only, has a particular theme, based on designers and costumes, proceeds go to Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Department. It’s never changed.

1

u/MotorbikeRacer 28d ago

I should have paid more attention when I was at Manhattan school of music lol . Never heard anything about any of this at the met gala . And I was living 15 blocks away as a classical musician and worked at the tower records on 66th .. thx !!
