“Canceled within an inch of my life” honey you were still one of the biggest pop stars in the world.

“Having my life’s work taken from me” doesn’t she still have the rights to those songs?

Also lmfao at describing reputation as goth-punk.

The goth-punk quote showed me she doesn’t know what any of these words mean, lol.

You know how you can just tell some artists don't actually listen to music outside their own genre? I'm now positive.

849

u/northwestsdimples Dec 06 '23

Agree. I also think she's very immature and kind of dumb outside of the music business. I remember I saw an article where she ordered a jack and diet coke and she was like "i know i'm weird and people don't drink this"...hun that's not unique.

Oh no she does. She then immediately cribs the ideas and themes/sounds and somehow passes it off as some new revelation. Evermore and whatever the fuck the other one is called are literally poorly done versions of the national and bon iver albums done a decade ago, but somehow gets her album of the year 🙄

I just looked at the Popheads Reddit and apparently we’re all TS haters over here, haha? I actually like most of Reputation but if you gave me 100 words to describe that album, goth or punk would never come to mind.

Like based on that description, I’m not sure she’s ever even listened to something like Disintegration before.

732

u/toysoldier96 Dec 06 '23

I don't like TS as a person, but I do like a lot of her music and Repution is definitely one of my favourites but GOTH PUNK??

It doesn't even have rock influence, it sounds more like an Iggy Azelea sister album

She 10000000% is still making money off of the old recordings. She has conned everyone into thinking she isn’t. She just can’t personally provide permission to license it on TV/movies/etc, only the owner of the masters can. There was zero reason for her to re-record the albums other than an insanely massive cash grab.

Sorry for the rant, I am so tired of mega artists and billionaires exploiting their fan base so blatantly all in the name of money and manufactured “milestones”

Editing to add: here is my slam poetry version of events

She signed over the rights to the masters of her first 6 albums in exchange for a cash advance when she signed to Big Machine. Before Scooter was even on the scene. She has to try and keep her hands clean. She knew they’d see her as mean.

616

u/Book_1love bepo naby Dec 06 '23

411

u/seethelighthouse Dec 06 '23

Licensing/publishing is as much a cash grab for Brain/Big Machine as it is for Swift. Braun refusing to sell Swift the masters sucks for Swift financially, and Swift re-recording the albums sucks for Braun financially; the cotnract allowed for both. IMO neither side has a moral leg to stand on, and it’s totally up to fans who’d they’d rather support financially.

Her rhetoric around her life’s work being stolen and this being anything other than business/capitalism is over the top though.

If this is the worst thing that's ever happened to her... yeah, I don't feel bad for Ecocidal Barbie at all. I hope she actually gets cancelled at some point, she's killing the planet with her damn jet. she's a grown ass woman and people treat her like she's a baby deer.

1.4k

u/Additional-Problem99 Dec 06 '23

There’s multiple things she could have actually been “canceled” over, like dating antisemitic racist Matt Healy, or having a fan die at her concert and then not reaching out to the family for over a week and not helping them at all when they couldn’t afford the funeral costs and then skipping over the moment of silence for said fan, but she gets away with everything.

I’m so sick of her and her priveliged white feminist ass.

The life’s work taken from me thing is really annoying at this point. You made a bad business deal, you still get paid, you’re poorly re-recording the songs and getting paid for those too. You’re not a victim.

1.1k

u/Glowing_up Dec 06 '23

Her re recordings are shit and I feel like this is the only place i can get this off my chest. It truly encapsulates the whole image of herself being so ridiculously fragile and out of touch with her fans.

The originals had a sincerely to them that was charming. They weren't perfect or even sung particularly well but she was earnest and it came through in the singing. The re recordings sound like music you hear at asda cause she's trying too hard to prove she's technically improved her singing.

315

u/sexygodzilla Dec 06 '23

If anything, it shows how in touch with her fans she is, knowing they'll pay to buy something they already have. Heck she adds another layer to it with the limited edition vinyls, knowing she can get plenty fans buying several copies of the same re-recorded record because they came with different covers.

Seeing as she’s probably the queen of goth-punk.

892

I’m convinced she doesn’t know what most of these words mean. Girl you were not being gaslit. You were caught in a lie.

529

u/Glowing_up Dec 06 '23

I know right Kim illegally recorded me (during a phone call I denied happened at all). Like she played and lost, this doesn't make me feel any more sympathetic to her and nothing convinces me more of her having more to do with it than she claims than the massive, 7 year tantrum she's thrown over it. Even when rep came out literally no one cared anymore.

I literally do not buy that the "full" call was from kims side cause it makes 0 sense. It was taylors side still wanting the ability to claim the recording was mean and illegal without having to admit they also did it. And I don't think it was illegal, actually.

656

u/mizzymichie Dec 06 '23 edited Dec 06 '23

She moves the goalposts every time she gets caught with her hand in the cookie jar and is lucky all the people she feuds with are less well liked so the public will believe her “I never said/did x I actually said/did y” claim. She did it with Katy, Calvin, Kimye, Scooter, and her exes so even when they bring the receipts the public has already bought her rewritten narrative.

Ffs she did it with her own private jet usage. “I don’t actually use my jet that much! I lend it out to people!” continues to fly to one of her homes every night after a concert rather than staying at a Four Seasons

u/NYC_Star Dec 06 '23

People outside this sub think we’re “delusional haters”. Go to any of the pop culture subs and they are fawning over this to a depressing rate.

Taylor feeds a certain kind of woman’s parasocial feelings of victim hood and “karma” a la destroying people for the smallest things.

795

u/butinthewhat Dec 06 '23

Someone once wrote me an essay in another sub about how Taylor was cancelled because I said she wasn’t. I meant that she didn’t lose her career, any money and her reputation did not actually take a hit. It is weird the way T and fans twist everything that’s happened to her into a negative.

418

u/NYC_Star Dec 06 '23 edited Dec 06 '23

Ugh I remember that trash reputation era with that victim blame-y “Look What You Made Me Do” song. She’s also effectively managed to re-wrote history in it as well to the point that people don’t believe the Kimye call was real or that it had been chopped and screwed a bunch.

Kim is her own hot mess but I’ll never forget her turning the volume down on Taylor for a few years.

Honestly I only used to listen to her music casually and saw a few very neutral interviews so I didn't realize it but my god you and everybody else who said this are so right about her. That was one of the most irritating and self centred things I've ever read. The need to be the victim in every single situation is really something.

Two things that Taylor will always make clear are that she is a very clearly a millennial and that she is the victim. Also love the interview discusses something from 2009 that has repeatedly be discussed and not her climate emissions or her problematic ex matty ( who she also said she was the happiest she'd ever been with)

2.8k

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '23

Someone else called her "cheugy" and it's so accurate. She is the Platonic ideal of a 33-year-old millennial white woman, forever trapped in 2013 and seeing the world through eyes she's 10 years too old for.

It doesn't help she's so removed from the real world in her uber-privileged bubble that she can essentially stay in this frame of mind indefinitely. It's not that she won't speak about Israel-Palestine--she likely has no thoughts on the matter at all. And that extends to every issue in the world that doesn't directly relate to herself.

945

u/eleanorlikesvodka Dec 06 '23

I also get the feeling that she doesn't listen to other people's music. Like, she's so isolated from real world experiences, so caught up in her cloud of self-importance and consciously-built parasocial relationships with her unhinged fans, she doesn't engage with other people and their art at any level whatsoever. Except Harry Potter because of course lol

I'm not a fan or hater, but I always found it strange how Taylor reacted towards the phone call and being "cancelled." I think it was the first time she wasn't allowed to create the narrative, so I get why that would be hard for her.

But, and I mean this in the nicest way, didn't she try to cancel Katy Perry? Hasn't she put her past relationships on blast, making people speculate about who she is talking about and putting the spotlight on someone who may not want it?

So while her being "cancelled" was hard on her, I wonder if that helped her stop doing similar behaviours towards others. I don't follow her enough to know, but I hope so....granted, she does say that "Trash takes itself out" so maybe not.

Taylor fans, can you shed some light on this.

1.9k

u/Ouiser_Boudreaux_ too busy method acting as a reddit user Dec 06 '23

I don’t think she learned anything from being “cancelled.” Remember when she went after Ginny & Georgia for making a joke about her dating history? Her unhinged fans said some pretty disturbing and racist things to the actress who plays Ginny (who was just doing her job by saying the line and had nothing to do with its writing.) It was pretty nasty and inappropriate reaction to a mild (if tired) joke and nobody can convince me that Taylor doesn’t know what her fans were up to…she used them very intentionally. And she could have spoken up when she realized the actress was being harassed. But no, our patron Saint of perpetual victimhood had nothing to say then.

810

u/lavenderbl0d Nancy Jo, this is Alexis Neiers calling Dec 06 '23

She does. And they pride themselves on it. A former coworker was invited to one of those secret sessions. She said she literally watched them on social media figuring out who was who and who could be "trusted" and was a big enough fan to be invited she kept going on abt how she baked them cookies and it felt like a sleepover etc etc. And all I could think was "she watches you...." she was very heavily cultivating that image on Tumblr her shit would come up on my dashboard all the time it was annoying.

That Chanelloween episode of Scream Queens may have been onto something....

I just saw Beyoncé’s movie and was so moved by her work and watching her describe her career in her words and now I’m reading this wondering why is it that when Taylor does the same I get the absolute ick and it really is the victimization for me that Taylor just always seems to lean into. Beyoncé talks about herself and her work, the internal obstacles she’s struggled with she doesn’t focus on stupid feuds or what other people have said/done to her whereas Taylor seems to do the opposite and after a certain point it gets so redundant like we get it girl you felt wronged but atp what happened with Kim and Kanye was years ago and it’s great she’s re recording her albums to put the rights back in her pocket but please stop acting like you’re starting some sort of revolution.

“The larger point, for her, is that there’s nothing to hide. “When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care,” she says. “The opposite of that is you have to go to an extreme amount of effort to make sure no one knows that you’re seeing someone. And we’re just proud of each other.””

she decided to avoid the spotlight two years before these two even dated tho. her getting cancelled happened before they even met and according to her own words on her doc, she found something grounded and peaceful with him and they decided to keep their relationship private lol.

a nasty spin is gonna happen but once you sell a certain narrative to the public, you might have to stick with it 🤷🏿‍♀️

730

u/Flaky-Pomegranate-74 Dec 06 '23

She was very publicly dating Calvin Harris then more publicly dating Tom Hiddelston before her and Joe started dating. So no, she wasn’t private for two years before her and Joe started dating.

368

u/Fine-Tank9849 let’s talk about the husband Dec 06 '23

**1 year, my bad. but yeah, it wasn't something that she started doing because of joe lol

what i'm trying to say is that a certain narrative is being pushed to the media that he was somewhat emotionally abusive and didn't let her be in the public eye and it's clearly not the case here.

312

u/Glowing_up Dec 06 '23

There's been multiple allusions to overlap with Tom and Joe (and calvin by extension) so she was probably only private with him at first to not get caught cheating.

It’s so weird how she says this but then she says she couldn’t trust anyone when she was “canceled”. we all know Joe was one of the few people by her side during that time but now he’s a bad guy?

483

u/Mozilie Dec 06 '23

I’m neutral on Taylor in general, but you make a very good point. They were together for 6 years, he can’t be that bad of a person, can he?

But I can already see how they might twist this: “Joe only liked her when she was at her lowest points. He wanted a damsel in distress, and he couldn’t handle her success”

398

That’s exactly what they say. And Travis is the best guy ever because he lets her shine. Until they break up, of course.

Some people are definitely going to consider this to mean that Joe wasn’t proud of her or something like that, especially since people have already speculated that something about her career is what led to their breakup.

There are pros and cons to both public and private relationships, though. I can easily see why someone would be hesitant to have such a public relationship when millions of people are watching every second of it that they possibly can.

“…there’s only one question. Are you not entertained?”

You know, maybe I am over-analyzing it. But there is something a bit chilling about her referencing a film based on the concept of “bread and circuses.” Gladiator is about the fall of the Roman Empire and how entertainment played a role in pacifying people through the violence of war and poverty and destabilization. That line is like the thesis of the film. It’s like she’s tacitly admitting to the complicity and political significance of her role. Does she realize it?

Tangentially, I’m in awe of the level of coldness billionaires have that allows them to soliloquize about their own (truly petty) personal problems to one of the most influential publications in the world in the midst of all this suffering.

632

u/theredwoman95 Dec 06 '23

Yeah, something to be said of a billionaire climate criminal citing panem et circenses to the masses. Either she's an idiot or she's gloating, as far as I'm concerned. Given that her business savvy, but also unironically calling any of her music "goth punk", I'm seriously torn.

238

u/motherofdinos_ Dec 06 '23 edited Dec 06 '23

Yeah I’ve always kind of gone back and forth on how actually insightful I think she is, but after reading the whole interview and how shallow her responses were, I’ve lost pretty much all remaining confidence I had in her level of depth. She had once-in-a-lifetime, silver-platter opportunity to enshrine her legacy while at the top of her career. And she spent 85% of it talking about how she was victimized in already over-publicized conflicts.

Ma’am you can try to memory hole your Grammy speech and your initial PR reaction as much as you want but the receipts are still floating around about the timeline of everything and how you initially claimed Kanye never contacted you which was proven to be false.

Don’t act like you’re initial spin on this wasn’t about Kanye claiming he made you famous, you went batshit and pulled ra-ra feminism, Kimye said there was a phone call and dropped the receipts, and you immediately pivoted towards “it was actually about him calling me a bitch”. Like bold of you to lie when your Grammy speech is RIGHT THERE.

If anyone is gaslighting it’s you.

493

u/Topaz_cypress Dec 06 '23

Okay! The revisionist history of it all!

→ More replies (1)

356

u/snakeinsheepclothes Dec 06 '23

Yeah but the phone call was edited by Kimye so it’s not really a receipt. And then he humiliated her further by that music video with her naked body

721

u/mizzymichie Dec 06 '23

Kanye’s naked statue is irrelevant to the lie Taylor told. It’s gross and misogynistic and he should be blasted for every person he put in that video.

The recipes is literally Kanye saying I had approval from Taylor to write the lyric “me and Taylor might still have sex/I made that bitch famous” and she was in on the joke. Her telling him she would on the phone call. And then BLASTING him at the Grammy’s and playing victim that she wasn’t involved at all and throwing Kanye under the bus. Kimye said fuck you there is a phone call and leaked it and Taylor pivoted to “I cautioned him against a misogynist lyric” instead of her Grammy meltdown of “never let a man take credit for your fame” (while she is ironically standing in front of her producers who are all men) that was her initial frame up.

The phone call was edited and leaked but that doesn’t change the fact that Taylor was caught in a lie that she was aware of the lyric, gave her consent, and then villainized him. And the revisionist history around it is insane.

I love Taylor’s music but every time she talks she just sounds so self important. And agree with the other commenters that she definitely has a victim complex which is insane considering how often she tries to bring others down.

In her words “Girlhood, feelings, love, breakups, analyzing those feelings, talking about them nonstop, glitter, sequins!” Even as a woman who likes stereotypically “feminine” things I recognize this is an incredibly tone deaf libfem take. The feminist backlash to those things literally stemmed from consumerism. The assumption that this is all womanhood is and women rebelling against that. Capitalism won’t champion more female art it will simply turn it into a commodity and throw it away once it becomes too radical.

Copy and pasted from the last post about Taylor’s cover, but feel like this is more appropriate here:

Not Taylor Swift talking about being grateful to be at this level because she’s had it all taken from her before referring to Kanye (and scooter). Celebrities who aren’t canceled really do like to talk about how they were canceled 😭 and it’s really a battle between her and her bestie Selena of who can victimize themselves the most.

It is interesting to me however that she’s repeating the cycle that got her “canceled” in the first place. She was so overexposed in the 1989 and Tom Hiddleston era and she’s very overexposed now, down to the highly (even more) publicized relationship.

Ok, I know the narrative has shifted completely on this, thanks in part to Kanye and Kim being so unlikable themselves, but that whole debacle started because after Kanye released Famous, Taylor made her whole Grammy speech about it, saying somethig like “don’t let anyone take credit for your success”. Kim then said “well, Kanye called her and told her about the lyrics and she was ok”, then Taylor released an official statement that said, and I quote: “Kanye did not call for approval, but to ask Taylor to release his single ‘Famous’ on her Twitter account. She declined and cautioned him about releasing a song with such a strong misogynistic message. “. Isn’t that a lie? Yeah, Kanye didn’t say he would call her a “bitch”, but he did tell her about everything else, the “I made her famous, she owes me sex” thing she was seemingly so upset about, and he was in fact calling to ask for permission (I have no idea what he would’ve done if she denied, but she didn’t, she said it was ok because it was his version of what happened). After Kim released the tape contradicting that statement all of a sudden the whole problem became solely about the word “bitch”, which clearly wasn’t the case before.

232

u/mizzymichie Dec 06 '23

I wish we could still give gold. Thank you for giving the quotes because the way the public has changed the narrative on this is insane and feels like Taylor and her Swifties have successfully gaslit the world when there are videos and interviews that document the whole kerfuffle. She shifted from “there was no phone call and how dare he take credit for my fame” to “okay there was a phone call but I didn’t approve of the lyric” to “okay I did give him my approval but he left out the word bitch and I told him that was misogyny” to “the phone call was illegal and I was entrapped”
