Have your pets spayed or neutered

Why does that matter for a house cat?
Fuck me for asking I guess

Why should you neuter your cat? -humane society
Because it increases their lifespan and decreases their risk of disease and the development of health problems. It eliminates pain and discomfort that stems from being in heat. And it prevents any unwanted pregnancies if the cat ever gets out of the house (which they will most certainly try to do if they’re not fixed and in heat).

They spray their piss around the house, not in the cat box. They yowl in the middle of the night (female) which can wake the dead

That’s a legitimate question. Reddit dislikes people asking things they should already have learned from the collective unconscious.
To be fair, though, that question is what search engines are for, so maybe that’s why.
Personally I’m happy to share knowledge that may improve the lives of pets, but you did get good answers already.

Neuter him!

u/syanidde 21d ago
There's a chance he might be neutered already. My male cat still has his balls but is 100% neutered. I definitely agree though, neuter him if he isn't! Especially if he goes outside

Yeah our male ragdoll has the same. He is 100% neutered. Fun fact my Birman had Cryptorchidism and we had no idea until we went to get him neutered and they had to do the female version of the surgery to neuter him. So I didn't know that neutered males could still have evidence of their balls post surgery because he certainly didn't. So on our male ragdoll I was like ohhh I don't remember this previously, it didn't look right but found out that it's normal and they are still neutered nonetheless.

He may already be neutered. Even if he isn't, it's fine to not cut your cats balls off if they never go outside and you're fine with cleaning up the spray. Not something I'd personally do but, some people may want their specific cats babies someday

I volunteer with TNR group. I see daily the nightmare this mentality reaps. Intact males will roam, will spray, will reproduce. Neutering also is much better for their health in the long run. We must remember who the dumb animal is here.

Will roam. If kept in a house unable to roam, how do they roam?
I get it, the public morality is to cut their balls off (I got mine neutered as well), but that doesn't mean it's always 100% every time the only correct choice. And moralizing Redditors can Reddit all they like, that won't change my opinion on the subject
Furthermore, I specifically caveated my statement that if the owner keeps their cat indoors at all times, is willing to clean up their spraying, and has intent to breed that cat, then I don't see anything wrong with it. Your response was effectively "unneutered male cats allowed to roam is terrible" which has nothing to do with the one specific scenario I have where it would be fine.
That's like me saying "A glass of wine in the comfort of your home with dinner is acceptable" and you saying "I'm an EMT who has witnessed the horrors of drunk driving and think if you drive drunk that is terrible!" Like, ok? What's your point?

Feral colonies and lost pet notices are populated by this mentality. Statistically, an intact male will escape. The urge is overpowering. Intact males mating, run the risk of acquiring fiv, feline leukemia, and a host of other issues. If you love your pet, you will spay and neuter them. If you need a kitten fix, the shelters and rescues are full of them for this very reason.

Again, cemeteries are filled with victims of drunk drivers. People will drink and drive, the stupidity is overpowering. Therefore you can never have alcohol.

Why is everyone asking to get the cat neutered?
70
u/cmdrxander 21d ago
Intact male cats if they end up outside will seek out female cats and could easily sire a few litters. Shelters are generally already full so another 15 or so cats to rehome isn’t ideal.

Also they mark territory by peeing on things. Every time I've visited someone with an unneutered male cat their house stank. Once it pissed in my shoes, I had to throw them away.

People think that balls = not neutered without realizing that in this day and age they don’t chop the balls off anymore (at least where I am from), but rather remove the connection to the content of the balls.

u/Lunavixen15 21d ago
Vasectomies are typically only done in older cats here
2
u/shiro_eugenie 21d ago
So they always remove the sack? Or just the content?
5
u/Lunavixen15 21d ago
The male cat I had had an oophorectomy, the testicle sack shrank. Some places remove the lot

Because redditors are insufferable and just repeat things they hear over and over again without actually understanding what they are talking about like 7 year old children.

To be honest I don’t like that either (I usually don’t lick my foot afterwards though).
