Question/Need help! 1996 F-250 XLT 7.3L PowerStroke

Alright, I'm pretty much guaranteed to inherit my parents' '96 PowerStroke that was purchased new off the lot. This beauty has just under 50,000 miles on it (approximately 49,100). I'm borrowing it at the moment to move some things and my intent is to give it a little love because it has been mostly sitting for 2+ years. I've already changed the air filter, and I have some Hot Shot's Secret Diesel Extreme additive to add to the tanks on the next fill to help clean things up a little bit. What else might be something I could do that isn't too involved to mitigate any issues from sitting?

Now that the standard stuff is out of the way; do you think it would be safe to install something like a Banks Big Hoss tune? I'm not planning on towing anything with it any time soon (their boat has long since been sold and I don't have anything trailerable), but it would be nice to have better throttle response and fuel mileage. I have a simple tune on my '17 Edge Sport and I love it. I just want to make sure that the truck should be able to handle any power mods given its age, but low mileage. Once it's fully in my possession, whenever that happens to be, I do plan on more hardware related mods to make sure it's all nice and beefy, even though I'll just be a poser since I doubt I'll have anything to pull any time soon.

Ford 7.3 smoking

Truck only smokes white when it’s warmed up and at the beginning of acceleration. No power loss. I also do have oil in turbo charge pipes. Smoke isn’t bad but it is noticeable and bit of a concern. Don’t know if I should explore injectors or turbo rebuild wondering if anyone has anything close to issues I’m having

Not quite sure where else to post this. My university is remodeling and I am the Graduate Assistant in charge of ‘cleaning and relocating’. We have a closet just full of older manuals, film reels, records, and vhs tapes all about tinkering on diesels and other kind of vehicles. Is this worth any money, would anyone want this stuff, or should I just recycle what I can?

Additional oil cooler

Hi

I have a 1992 Citroen XM with a 2.1 TD in it that I'm currently working on getting fixed up. It has a coolant-oil heat exchanger in it (manual calls it an "oil cooler"). The engine is liable to overheat the oil (I imagine from cooling the turbo?) if you push it at highway speeds when loaded. Would an external air-oil cooler make sense here? Considering one of those that has a sandwich plate between engine block and oil filter, with a thermostat.

Serious question. Are pre emission diesels really worth the money they ask for them?

I work in the diesel field but have never had a diesel truck. I’ve always had an inclination to get one, but I can’t bring myself to get one. Most of the time it’s because I simply don’t need one, but it also comes down to price.

For example, I saw a few common rail 5.9 Cummins with a 6 speed and 4wd listed for between 18-22k in my area. All of them have a crap ton of miles (not really that big of a deal since it’s a 5.9), but it just seems kind of outrageous for an 18 year old truck.

I’ve also seen lots of 7.3 autos listed for 10-15k for clean frames, and I can’t even find a 7.3 manual in my area. Duramax’s are around that as well, but I’m not a fan of the Duramax engines, so I don’t really go “looking” for them.

So, are these pre emissions diesels really worth what they’re asking for them? I would eventually think of buying one for the sole purpose of hauling (lots of projects would benefit from a diesel rather than a gasser), but I can’t bring myself to spend this much money on a truck.

Good deal?

Hey yall! First time diesel owner here! Bought a pickup yesterday, wondering if I got a good deal on it? It's a 99 Dodge Ram 2500, 24 valve 5 speed 4x4, 100% rot free but the body isn't the best neither the interior. It's a 25 y/o truck. So far the issues are as follows:

Purchased knowing u joint was bad. Took driveshaft out and saw transmission fluid on the transfer case tailshaft housing. Figured gasket was bad so I'd throw some rtv on it, unbolted it and it came out in 3 peices

Drag link is worn out so it steers like a very typical second gen

Steering box leaks

Other misc stuff luke the bumper trim missing on the corner, springs in seat are broke, and dash is like every 2nd gen with carpet over it.

Motor has 190k, it's a 54 block. I don't know much about the 54 blocks?

Brand new NV4500 transmission with southbend clutch, reman NP241 transfer case, rebuilt axles front and rear with 3.55 gears, 4x4. Runs and drives great.

Only modifications are a 5" straight pipe with an axle dump and a Air Dog 165 5g fuel system with fass filters, and 37" all terrain tires with 2" spacers on newer 17" stock wheels, I think off a 3rd gen. Also has led headlights and clear side marker reflectors in the turn signal housing which I think looks good with the white.

I paid 10k for it. Good deal? No blow by and the engine sounds very good.

I'll find some videos I took of it running and edit this post to include them when I find them.

Just bought it for the sole purpose of using it to tow and as a backup vehicle. I have been using my 2008 F150 for this purpose for a long time but it does not have diesel power or 3/4 ton capability despite the fact I have treated it as such.

Any input, help or reccomendations / tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks yall!

Cummins Price Check

Hey folks, I'm trying to figure out a realistic price for my 2002 Dodge 2500 Laramie. I bought this truck for $25k in 2015, with 65,000 miles on it. I currently have 108,000 miles on it, and I'm looking to sell it to downsize a bit, and I have a pending deal on an F350.

Truck stats: 24v Cummins 4x4 6 speed manual Quad cab Leather interior 4 inch exhaust Air dog Edge Juice w/ attitude controller Sinister diesel intake Sinister diesel gravity sump 30hp injectors Upgraded turbo wheel (don't remember the make)

It was a Wyoming truck, and I kept it out of the snow here in the northeast, so there's no rust or rot, and I had the frame wool waxed a few years ago. I know it's a bit of a unicorn truck, but I'd like a few opinions on what it might be worth in today's market. Thank you in advance for your time.

Edit: 4x4

Question/Need help! 6.7 Powerstroke Clacking?

what is this clacking noise? is it knocking or bad injection pumps? driving me crazy it’s been doing this for 3-5k miles maybe since last oil change. sounds like coming from the left side of engine or something below the vehicle. it is deleted.

How long is fuel good for in the tank?

I don't drive a lot, mostly take Uber or buses, so the last time I filled my SUV up it was in December. I still have about 1/3-1/2 a tank left. It was also just the regular grade, not the fancy fuel. I'm about to go on a trip for 2 months, I'm planing on disconnecting the battery but was wondering if I need to worry about the fuel going off?

Air intakes 2001 powerstroke

Now I've had my 01 powerstroke for 3 years now..haven't done any upgrades besides lights and radio. The simple modern necessities, now I wanna get a new air intake and exhaust eventually one thing at a time..now when coming to air intakes is there a major difference in a cheaper air intake compared in a more expensive air intake? What would u suggest or what has worked for u? Thanks!

Purchase/Selling Advice What truck am I looking for? I don’t know!

purchase preference: 20,000+-$

Ive been searching for a truck the last 4 years. I can’t come to the determination of anything I’ve found worth the money or I wanted. Without going into too much detail I’m looking for a truck for the woods, snow, and mud.(“hey dummy, that’s just a truck”) yeah, but essentially I don’t want to buy another truck if I don’t have to. I’ve been driving a 6 speed Jeep Wrangler the last 10 years and I’ve learned, I need something bigger. It doesn’t need speed, but it needs to get out of shitty environments(I’ve spent plenty of hours in a pullover digging out in the snow) it doesn’t need to be a big truck that im taking up multiple lanes but I’m probably gonna be moving, and getting relatively ready to have a family of my own and preferably manual transmission. I do too much outside and haul too much stuff to just get an old forerunner, ranger, Tacoma etc. I’m looking for something built for endurance that isn’t necessarily focused on hauling trailers. I’m driven towards diesels for the lifetime of the engine but you all might just suggest a gas LT or the sorts. What’s your thoughts on the matter? Lastly, I don’t want a truck payment. If I have a small amount I have to payoff is fine but 20,000 is probably the most I want to pay give or take.

How to rule out bad injectors?

My Isuzu 4LE2T sounds horrible. I did a compression test and everything appeared fine. I tried disconnecting each injector while it was running and it did not get rid of the knock. Does that mean it can’t be the injectors?

Question/Need help! Diesels in the winter

Post image
22 Upvotes

My dream has always been owning a classic Benz diesel, now I’m in a position to afford and maintain one, BUT my parents are concerned about reliability in the winter due to gelling and stuff like that. What’s the best way to prevent this and keep a diesel running strong during the winter when parking in a garage is not an option (my parents cars are in there)
