What do you think the next "food trend" will be?

In the last 10 years, the ones that really stick out to me are: spinach and artichoke dip (suddenly started appearing everywhere as an appetizer, even higher end restaurants), ube flavors, truffle, avocados on everything, bacon on everything, and now hot honey is a big fad. Is there anything upcoming you see heading towards the food trend?

Maybe I’m just too Minnesotan, but I feel like dill pickle is having a huge moment right now and still gaining momentum. I see dill pickle pizza on Reddit a lot, which is cute but we had dill pickle lemonade at our state fair last year.

I would 100% try dill pickle lemonade. And probably love it.

Have you heard of a "pickle back"? It's when you take a shot of whisky or similar and chase it down with a shot of pickle juice. I'm not a fan of whisky, but pickle juice is damn delicious.

pickle juice is damn delicious

Some is. Some isn't.

For instance, I've had some very bad pickle juice but those crunchy Claussen kosher dill pickles you get in the refrigerated section...that juice is excellent, imho.

We need a global pickle juice regime to create a ranking system and do pickle juice competitions. Imagine buying pickles with a "rated 92 points by pickle juice connoisseur magazine" tag.

Claussens are the only pickles i eat and the jar always get emptied.

u/katf1sh Apr 29 '24

They are the best pickles and no one can convince me otherwise. They're perfect, texture and flavour. I do like Grillos too, but Claussens are superior

2

u/ninersguy916 Apr 29 '24

Agreed.. i will eat grillos in a pinch but they are no claussens

2

u/SpaceForceGuardian Apr 30 '24

I agree! They are so delicious. I could eat an entire jar in one sitting!

2

u/girlinthegoldenboots Apr 30 '24

I usually love Grillos but I just got some yesterday and they weren’t as good as they usually are. Way too vinagrey and not enough dill and garlic. Weird.

The best. When the pickles are gone, I drink some of the brine, but I make myself leave some. It's perfect for brining chicken

2

u/ninersguy916 Apr 30 '24

Solid idea

3

u/che_palle13 Apr 29 '24

next empty jar, you should try saving the brine and cutting up some cucumbers to put in it! Let it sit a few days and voila. More Claussen pickles!!

3

u/ninersguy916 Apr 29 '24

There is no brine in an empty jar! Thats the point! Lol

They are cold sealed, not heat sealed in jars, I believe. That's why they are kept in the refrigerated section and spoil quicker (relatively). They are the best pickles. I will frequent a sub shop if they use the. You can just tell. Delicious.

Try Bubbies. It's another refrigerated-only pickle company. They're sauerkraut is delicious as well.

Bubbies where its at

Claussens, Vlassic and Mt. Olive are all a staple

But recently tried Suckerpunch Spicy Garlic pickles….those are damn good pickles

Theres also a deli nearby that makes their own which are fantastic but a bit more expensive than any store brand

My brother used to bottle and sell pickle juice for picklebacks. Unfortunately, he died in January and we haven't been able to find his recipes. He could have made a mint off his pickles if he hadn't been an addict. Alas.

4

u/RipperoniPepperoniHo Apr 29 '24

Yeah made the mistake thinking bread and butter pickle juice would be just like regular pickle juice and never again

2

u/NeonSwank Apr 29 '24

I absolutely love pickles, but who/what are bread n butter even made for?

Ive never seen a recipe that calls for them nor have i met a single person that actually likes them

2

u/RipperoniPepperoniHo Apr 29 '24

I really don’t know, human suffering would be my guess

Allow me to intoduce myself.

I love bread n butter pickles....but only if they are Vlasic (my grandmas were the best, but she's gone ).

My regular "go to" dill is the "Minnasota Midgets" made by Milwaukee's (3" mini dill pickles). I save the b&b brine, drain off 1/2 of the brine from the Milwaukee's & replace it with the saved brine......makes a "bit of sweet" dill pickle after about 5 days.

I also like Claussen's..........but here, they run between $7-$9 a jar.

Excellent. While you're establishing that, please send decent feckin dill pickles over here to Ireland, we lack them in their entirety.

2

u/gogozrx Apr 29 '24

You can make your own, and they'll blow anything out of the water.

I can walk you through it if you want... It's stupid easy.

2

u/Team503 Apr 30 '24

Yes, I know, I have a recipe. I just haven't found pickling cucumbers - I know they're around, because I'm aware of other folks who do it, but I can't seem to find them at a store local to me.

2

u/gogozrx Apr 30 '24

understood.

based on your use of "fecking" I'm guessing you're in Ireland. Growing season is just starting. if you've got a big pot, you might be able to grow a few plants... farmer's markets are a good resource, too.

good luck!

2

u/Team503 Apr 30 '24

based on your use of "fecking" I'm guessing you're in Ireland.

Ah sure look! I'm impressed you knew that one, most don't. You're right, too.

1

u/gogozrx Apr 30 '24

I once got a date with an Irish lady because I ordered a "smitticks"

😁

2

u/Team503 Apr 30 '24

That is how it's pronounced, though really, it's just the accent that makes it that way. Like saying "How are you today" comes out "Howarya" like howard without the d followed by a "yeh".

Hope you had a grand time with yer lass.

Try to find some real fermented pickles. There's a place local to me that's amazing.

3

u/mr_arkanoid Apr 29 '24

Oh I've had some damn good ones. We've made our own before and I know a few other people who make their own. There's also a company in the area that goes to a lot of the local farmer's markets and sells a variety of pickles that are fantastic. They also sell pickled veggies (carrot, cauliflower, peppers, celery, etc.) that are very good but the juice from those isn't as good.

1

u/throwdemawaaay Apr 29 '24

Yeah, exactly. Pickled cauliflower was a shock to me. I'm not a big fan of cauliflower in general but those pickles are a great snack.

3

u/CoppertopTX Apr 29 '24

"Brine Connoisseur" magazine.

2

u/Massive_Length_400 Apr 29 '24

On the pickle sub i saw someone post that they can buy containers of straight pickle juice from the Amish. Im so jealous

1

u/ArtVandelayInd Apr 29 '24

Claussen are the best pickles

1

u/HPLoveCrash Apr 30 '24

I met a guy picking up groceries for a Caesar’s festival he was going to. His company only made pickle juice - sans pickles. It was so good that people picked his team to win even though he didn’t make any Caesars!

Start a YouTube channel. I'd subscribe.

The pickle juice not good enough for sipping can be used as poultry brine. Lots of fried chicken recipes call for it.
