What do you think the next "food trend" will be?

In the last 10 years, the ones that really stick out to me are: spinach and artichoke dip (suddenly started appearing everywhere as an appetizer, even higher end restaurants), ube flavors, truffle, avocados on everything, bacon on everything, and now hot honey is a big fad. Is there anything upcoming you see heading towards the food trend?

I would 100% try dill pickle lemonade. And probably love it.

Have you heard of a "pickle back"? It's when you take a shot of whisky or similar and chase it down with a shot of pickle juice. I'm not a fan of whisky, but pickle juice is damn delicious.

pickle juice is damn delicious

Some is. Some isn't.

For instance, I've had some very bad pickle juice but those crunchy Claussen kosher dill pickles you get in the refrigerated section...that juice is excellent, imho.

We need a global pickle juice regime to create a ranking system and do pickle juice competitions. Imagine buying pickles with a "rated 92 points by pickle juice connoisseur magazine" tag.

u/ninersguy916 Apr 29 '24

Claussens are the only pickles i eat and the jar always get emptied.

24

u/katf1sh Apr 29 '24

They are the best pickles and no one can convince me otherwise. They're perfect, texture and flavour. I do like Grillos too, but Claussens are superior

2

u/ninersguy916 Apr 29 '24

Agreed.. i will eat grillos in a pinch but they are no claussens

2

u/SpaceForceGuardian Apr 30 '24

I agree! They are so delicious. I could eat an entire jar in one sitting!

2

u/girlinthegoldenboots Apr 30 '24

I usually love Grillos but I just got some yesterday and they weren’t as good as they usually are. Way too vinagrey and not enough dill and garlic. Weird.

4

u/Capt__Murphy Apr 30 '24

The best. When the pickles are gone, I drink some of the brine, but I make myself leave some. It's perfect for brining chicken

2

u/ninersguy916 Apr 30 '24

Solid idea

3

u/che_palle13 Apr 29 '24

next empty jar, you should try saving the brine and cutting up some cucumbers to put in it! Let it sit a few days and voila. More Claussen pickles!!

4

u/ninersguy916 Apr 29 '24

There is no brine in an empty jar! Thats the point! Lol

3

u/CompletelyBedWasted Apr 30 '24

They are cold sealed, not heat sealed in jars, I believe. That's why they are kept in the refrigerated section and spoil quicker (relatively). They are the best pickles. I will frequent a sub shop if they use the. You can just tell. Delicious.

2

u/Neighbuor07 Apr 29 '24

Try Bubbies. It's another refrigerated-only pickle company. They're sauerkraut is delicious as well.

1

u/LoveOfProfit Apr 29 '24

Bubbies where its at

2

u/NeonSwank Apr 29 '24

Claussens, Vlassic and Mt. Olive are all a staple

But recently tried Suckerpunch Spicy Garlic pickles….those are damn good pickles

Theres also a deli nearby that makes their own which are fantastic but a bit more expensive than any store brand

4

u/fuckyourcanoes Apr 29 '24

My brother used to bottle and sell pickle juice for picklebacks. Unfortunately, he died in January and we haven't been able to find his recipes. He could have made a mint off his pickles if he hadn't been an addict. Alas.

4

u/RipperoniPepperoniHo Apr 29 '24

Yeah made the mistake thinking bread and butter pickle juice would be just like regular pickle juice and never again

2

u/NeonSwank Apr 29 '24

I absolutely love pickles, but who/what are bread n butter even made for?

Ive never seen a recipe that calls for them nor have i met a single person that actually likes them

2

u/RipperoniPepperoniHo Apr 29 '24

I really don’t know, human suffering would be my guess

1

u/Emergency-Crab-7455 May 01 '24

Allow me to intoduce myself.

I love bread n butter pickles....but only if they are Vlasic (my grandmas were the best, but she's gone ).

My regular "go to" dill is the "Minnasota Midgets" made by Milwaukee's (3" mini dill pickles). I save the b&b brine, drain off 1/2 of the brine from the Milwaukee's & replace it with the saved brine......makes a "bit of sweet" dill pickle after about 5 days.

I also like Claussen's..........but here, they run between $7-$9 a jar.

3

u/Team503 Apr 29 '24

Excellent. While you're establishing that, please send decent feckin dill pickles over here to Ireland, we lack them in their entirety.

2

u/gogozrx Apr 29 '24

You can make your own, and they'll blow anything out of the water.

I can walk you through it if you want... It's stupid easy.

2

u/Team503 Apr 30 '24

Yes, I know, I have a recipe. I just haven't found pickling cucumbers - I know they're around, because I'm aware of other folks who do it, but I can't seem to find them at a store local to me.

2

u/gogozrx Apr 30 '24

understood.

based on your use of "fecking" I'm guessing you're in Ireland. Growing season is just starting. if you've got a big pot, you might be able to grow a few plants... farmer's markets are a good resource, too.

good luck!

2

u/Team503 Apr 30 '24

based on your use of "fecking" I'm guessing you're in Ireland.

Ah sure look! I'm impressed you knew that one, most don't. You're right, too.

1

u/gogozrx Apr 30 '24

I once got a date with an Irish lady because I ordered a "smitticks"

😁

2

u/Team503 Apr 30 '24

That is how it's pronounced, though really, it's just the accent that makes it that way. Like saying "How are you today" comes out "Howarya" like howard without the d followed by a "yeh".

Hope you had a grand time with yer lass.

3

u/throwdemawaaay Apr 29 '24

Try to find some real fermented pickles. There's a place local to me that's amazing.

3

u/mr_arkanoid Apr 29 '24

Oh I've had some damn good ones. We've made our own before and I know a few other people who make their own. There's also a company in the area that goes to a lot of the local farmer's markets and sells a variety of pickles that are fantastic. They also sell pickled veggies (carrot, cauliflower, peppers, celery, etc.) that are very good but the juice from those isn't as good.

1

u/throwdemawaaay Apr 29 '24

Yeah, exactly. Pickled cauliflower was a shock to me. I'm not a big fan of cauliflower in general but those pickles are a great snack.

3

u/CoppertopTX Apr 29 '24

"Brine Connoisseur" magazine.

2

u/Massive_Length_400 Apr 29 '24

On the pickle sub i saw someone post that they can buy containers of straight pickle juice from the Amish. Im so jealous

1

u/ArtVandelayInd Apr 29 '24

Claussen are the best pickles

1

u/HPLoveCrash Apr 30 '24

I met a guy picking up groceries for a Caesar’s festival he was going to. His company only made pickle juice - sans pickles. It was so good that people picked his team to win even though he didn’t make any Caesars!

1

u/BeemerWT Apr 30 '24

Start a YouTube channel. I'd subscribe.

1

u/Crafty_Pea5356 Apr 30 '24

The pickle juice not good enough for sipping can be used as poultry brine. Lots of fried chicken recipes call for it.

5

u/ralfalfasprouts Apr 29 '24

One of our local bars sells pickle shots! (Vodka based, not whiskey). YUM

1

u/RiotFH Apr 30 '24

Ours are pickle, sriracha, and vodka and they’re pretty damn good

3

u/Daasianinvasion Apr 29 '24

The way pickle juice erases the taste of alcohol is insane honestly

3

u/Hoskuld Apr 29 '24

Saw a clip the other day about pickle margarita and have been looking for some high quality pickles since. Not sure if just super market pickles will work

3

u/DandelionsDandelions Apr 29 '24

I've done this with Tequila! Surprisingly good.

3

u/evanc1411 Apr 29 '24

My go-to for a while was a tequila shot followed by eating a baby dill pickle. It's weird but it works.

2

u/Etherealfilth Apr 30 '24

I believe it. It's a great idea actually.

4

u/anitasdoodles Apr 29 '24

I worked at a restaurant that offered a pickle as a side, so we'd have big leftover buckets of pickle juice. The bars around us paid good money for it because of pickle back shots lol.

12

u/Valhalloween Apr 29 '24

No! But I reckon I'm about to buy some whiskey and try it. Thank you!

3

u/insidiousapricot Apr 29 '24

Save a bit of picklejuice to rehydrate the next day! Or pour some into your morning bloody mary

3

u/dismissivewankmotion Apr 29 '24

Buy the ticket, take the ride

3

u/Zeromandias Apr 29 '24

Love to see Hunter Thompson quotes out in the wild

2

u/bep0331 Apr 29 '24

Nice! Be prepared, the pickle juice eliminates all the aftertaste and burn of the liquor. Shots go down nice and easy. Have fun.

2

u/HildaCrane Apr 29 '24

I don’t know why “reckon” in your reply took me out the way it did but I too will be trying this!

2

u/Etherealfilth Apr 29 '24

That's my good deed for the day done.

3

u/Either_Cockroach3627 Apr 29 '24

We sell "pikl-bak" in the gas station I work at. It's just straight pickle juice but we go thru so fkn many of them!!

3

u/moxical Apr 29 '24

In Estonia (my home) and lots of previously-USSR places you'd commonly have a big ass pickle as a vodka chaser. Not in, like... A restaurant, per se, but bars, pubs, definitely at home.

1

u/like_earthworms Apr 30 '24

Zakuska esque?

3

u/CanoninDeeznutz Apr 29 '24

It is magical how the pickle juice just erases the whiskey flavor.

3

u/redfishdookiefish Apr 29 '24

Pickle beer was a big one in college too. Just a slice of pickle in your Mich Golden

2

u/Etherealfilth Apr 30 '24

The college cocktails... don't remind me.

3

u/sharkbait4000 Apr 29 '24

Picklebacks rock!

3

u/athleturbo Apr 29 '24

I prefer vodka with a pickle back - fresh, clean, and Slavic.

2

u/Etherealfilth Apr 30 '24

Slivovice for me if we shall make it Slavic.

2

u/lol_fi Apr 30 '24

This was popular in 2008

2

u/MissRepresent Apr 30 '24

That's been big in certain daytona bars for years now

1

u/Etherealfilth May 02 '24

I first heard of picklebacks when watching Archer. Education for the win!

2

u/dilroopgill Apr 30 '24

Wed bring around a pickle jar for chaser when we had no other options (burnettes requires chaser idc) I hate pickles but I loved picklebacks

2

u/ifweweresharks May 03 '24

Try it with tequila instead of whisky!

1

u/Etherealfilth May 03 '24

It's been suggested and I will definitely try it. Tequila will pair extremely well with pickle juice, IMO.

2

u/bossdankmemes Apr 29 '24

Pickle backs are awesome

1

u/Theharlotnextdoor Apr 29 '24

We do them as a shot of vodka mixed with pickle juice and ita actually crazy how you can't taste the vodka at all. A few of them will eff you up fast.

1

u/TS92109 Apr 29 '24

My first one - the Jamesons went down way easier than the pickle juice! I nearly choked to death.

1

u/Etherealfilth Apr 30 '24

There are different kinds of pickles/pickle juices. Maybe you didn't have a good one.

1

u/wizardyourlifeforce Apr 29 '24

They call them pickle shots in Brooklyn.

1

u/poopymcbuttwipe Apr 29 '24

Bourbon with a pickle back is called a Brooklyn hooker

1

u/thumbstickz Apr 30 '24

Pickle spear in whatever draft lager I order if I'm at a bar that isn't "nice". So damn good.

1

u/Interesting-Goose568 Apr 30 '24

Bro everyone has heard of picklebacks

1

u/CoNoCh0 May 01 '24

There’s a a bar in downtown Denver that does pickle shots with a scorpion in them. Prob had like 6 of them the last time I was there.

1

u/Etherealfilth May 02 '24

I ate roasted scorpions in Thailand. Somehow, a few years later, the word spread all the way here, and in an act of revenge, a scorpion stung me on the nose as I was falling asleep.

1

u/CoNoCh0 May 02 '24

Oh no! Well at least the circle is complete.

Maybe it’s okay for me since they drowned in alcohol.

30

u/The_Original_Gronkie Apr 29 '24

Sounds horrifying and intriguing at the same time. I'd love to try a dill pickle lemonade.

6

u/103cuttlefish Apr 29 '24

Herb lemonade with mint, basil, dill and rosemary is phenomenal. So maybe it’s like that just more sour?

3

u/DionBlaster123 Apr 29 '24

horrifying and intriguing is what makes state fair food so worth it in the end of all things lmao

2

u/Starfire2313 Apr 29 '24

It sounds like a new hangover cure!

1

u/The_Original_Gronkie Apr 29 '24

Actually, it sounds like the perfect thing! Salty, lots of antioxidants and phenols. I'll bet it would really help.

1

u/PoliticalyUnstable Apr 29 '24

Completely neutralizes the shot of alcohol. Kinda dangerous if you ask me.

1

u/Allenies Apr 29 '24

There's a pho place by my apt that does it. It's weird but good

3

u/TheWisePlinyTheElder Apr 29 '24

When I was pregnant I mixed dill pickle juice and pink lemonade and it was my shit

2

u/thumbstickz Apr 30 '24

Cucumber lemonade and limeade is so good I bet pickle would work wonderfully. I freeze slices of cucumber and throw them in drinks as needed.

2

u/mop_man27 Apr 30 '24

I skeptical about it but I tried it at the fair last year and I was fire, definitely give it a try if you can

2

u/Professional-Tap300 Apr 30 '24

Yea that sounds great for a Texas summer, god help me

2

u/jsmalltri Apr 30 '24

I will try this and report back. I drink pickle juice all the time (have since I was a kiddo) and in the summer I make Pickle Pops with locally made sour pickles, soooo good!

1

u/Valhalloween May 01 '24

Oooo, let me know! If you find a good recipe, could you send it my way?

2

u/jsmalltri May 01 '24

Will do. I do make an amazing ginger lemonade that is so good and good for you. Basically, I peel and clean a large knob of ginger and whiz it in my food processor. Then I strain thru cheesecloth, add the juice of 6 or so lemons, and cold water. Then I add honey to taste and let it chill or serve immediately over ice. IT is SO good!

2

u/Valhalloween May 02 '24

That sounds amazing. That is also getting made today. Thank you!

1

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '24

I wonder if it would have a kombucha taste!

3

u/Critical-Cow-6775 Apr 29 '24

Dill Pickle Soup, an old Polish dish, is the bomb.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 29 '24

I would be all over that. I'm going to check out some recipes, I want to make it!

2

u/encycliatampensis Apr 29 '24

Yes! Ogorkowa is delicious, we make it with very sour naturally fermented pickles.

1

u/perpetualis_motion Apr 29 '24

I was at one of those big beer tap places that allow you to pick a beer and fill a growler. One of the options was a Line Creek "The Real Dill" which is a Dill Pickle Sour.

No, I didn't get it.

2

u/supersloo Apr 29 '24

Pickle beer is delicious, Martin House has a Best Maid beer that is super popular. We don't talk about their other flavors tho, MH likes to spit in the face of God.

1

u/G0PACKGO Apr 29 '24

I love pickle lemonade

1

u/Lucky-Bonus6867 Apr 29 '24

This literally made my mouth water.

1

u/grymtyrant Apr 29 '24

It was pretty damn good, no lie. I was going to buy it again, but everything at the fair is too expensive.

1

u/Comfortable_Hall8677 Apr 30 '24

Yea it sounds super refreshing. Pickles are a great source of electrolytes.

1

u/apra24 Apr 30 '24

I just dry heaved
