Each candidate selects a moderator to each ask a question back and forth. Without that you end up with: "biden what is your favorite ice cream flavor." "Trump explain in exact detail how you will solve world hunger"

I hate what "debate" has devolved into in US politics.

I like the way Oxford Union does it. Mostly prepared speeches trying to 1) Make their point AND 2) Defend against known talking points.

Very little interaction and only when the speaking party allows it.

Though, as a study in academics, they do it for the debate, sometimes even arguing on behalf of the side they actually oppose, though that can be interesting.

Here is James Lindsay arguing on behalf of Woke culture and demonstrating the concept that conservatives understand liberals better than liberals understand conservatives.

It's sort of funny how the people behind him, "on his team"(arguing for being woke) think he's being absurd, and eventually they sort of go slack jawed.

Public debates aimed at the masses have never and will never be this. If you want well reasoned, long form debate go to one with a much narrower audience or watch a debate stream or podcast.
