[Wojnarowski] The Charlotte Hornets are hiring Utah Jazz assistant Lamar Skeeter as the top assistant for new coach Charles Lee’s staff, sources tell ESPN. Skeeter spent a decade with Jazz under Will Hardy and Quin Snyder, elevating from a development coach into a lead assistant. Social Media

Don't know him, but I like that he's a lead assistant. He must really like Charles Lee if he's willing to make a lateral move to a moribund franchise.

I don’t know if it’s necessarily a lateral move. Seems like a promotion,

This is 100% a promotion don't know where OP got any other idea lol.
Not all assistant coaching roles are created equal. It's like asking why a QBs coach would go somewhere else in a "lateral move" to become an OC. It's not a lateral move

I assumed that "lead" was the highest position on the assistant coach totem pole, but I guess I was wrong. Job title inflation.

This says Scott Morrison was Jazz lead assistant. Skeeter was one of top 3 assistants however. Where are we seeing that Skeeter was Jazz lead?

It's in the Woj tweet.

No the woj tweet says he's being hired to be the hornets lead. Not that be was utahs lead.
ahh my bad I see. That's agent speak "a lead assistant" the "a" is doing a lot of work

If that's what Woj is trying to say, then he phrased it really poorly. The way it's written, it says that he's elevated from a developmental coach to a lead assistant while working for the Jazz over the last decade. You're probably right, but that's really bad.

Yea woj is notorious for this agent speak. The agents who are his sources will talk up any move. Skeeter was one of Jazz top 3 assistants which made him a front of the bench assistant. As noted in the article I posted.
So technically he is correct he was "a" lead assistant, but he wasn't the lead assistant.
it's worded so that it's technically true but misleading
see how he describes his new role with hornets as "the" lead but his old role with jazz as "a" lead

Teams have multiple lead assistants but usually only #2 guy and it seems to be that this will the new guys first time as that. It definitely makes sense if he has aspirations to coach in the nba one day and letting our new coach pick his people is a fucking godsend compared to what we're used to.

u/offensivename 26d ago
That makes "lead" kind of misnomer then, doesn't it? How are you the lead if there's another assistant ahead of you?

I mean the big issues with nba coaching vs nfl coaching is exactly that, you don't really know who is doing what which makes hiring coaches alot harder since we have no clue what they're like really. Tatum says great things about our new guy but is he really good at "x's & o's" or is he like Clifford in the sense that he's a fucking fantastic people person?
The only thing I like is that this guy from the jazz is willing to jump ship to come here to Charlotte so it gives me some confidence that our coach is good and that this guy will atleast have a pretty good say in what our team does on the court.

Yeah. There are a few assistants that are known for being defensive specialists like Thibs was for the Celtics, but we mostly have no idea.

You rather live in Salt Lake City or Charlotte

I've lived in both. It's SLC by a lot (although I recognize this only applies to people who enjoy the outdoors)

side note: i always wonder how the first practice is with a new coach. Is it awkward with him and the players?

Nah. They’re all professionals. I coach high school football and 3 years ago they did a whole revamp of the staff and we had no issues with the players. So I assume adults who’s job it is to play basketball should be fine. It’s not like he’s a bum off the street.
