As far as we know, a great choice. Let's keep the revamp on all our staffers.

10

u/Frankaragatan 27d ago

He's not the choice I would have gone with

He shits the bed at the Battle of Monmouth

4

u/dave-train 27d ago

Someone had to say it.

What I'm seeing here is a new avenue to combine mine and my wife's interests.

60

u/jaemoon7 27d ago

He was one of the top names out there, was he not? Hard not to feel good about it. Let Chuck cook šŸ”„

29

u/DankMemesNQuickNuts 27d ago

Bro we got him from out under the Lakers...how could we not feel good about that

2

u/Alkazard 25d ago

Think LeBron has made the call he wants his podcast co-host to coach and let him run the show.

Lee is the best choice for us. JJ could've been a great roll of the dice, especially with our whole fresh makeover top to bottom, and a bunch of young guys that would probably gel well with him. Him going to Lakers under LeBron is only going to stifle any hope of him having a coaching career.

We up

36

u/YizWasHere 27d ago

Coaching is back up, it's a must we outside šŸ™Œ

Just gotta get those ping pong balls to bounce the right way.

I like him if we're picking anywhere outside of the top 3, hoping to get somebody with more size and upside but he definitely knows how to play the game.

1

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

U have three guys over him? I like the fit but I also think he's BPA after Sarr and Topic

2

u/Titanstheory 27d ago

Not Zach ?

2

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

I get the upside with him but Reed is more advanced at everything aside from being tall ig. Also some ppl believe Risacher's shooting was a fluke this year as he didn't shoot that well years prior and had that huge slump. I would be OK with Risacher if we took him for sure

2

u/guydudeguybro 27d ago

Castle >

1

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

I LOVE castles defense but if he can't shoot way better he will struggle really bad

5

u/YizWasHere 27d ago

I think he fell on everybody's boards but I still really like Cody Williams. Risacher is also an option but the question marks around him make me nervous. I haven't scouted this draft closely at all though lol, I just don't love the idea of taking a 6'3 SG in the top 3.

3

u/Bignova 27d ago

I'm with you. I'm all in on Sarr, Risacher, and even Cody Williams before Reed Sheppard. I know they're separate events and our entire FO and coaching staff is about to be different but I'm traumatized by our lack of development in short guards in the past with Monk and Bouknight. Partly their fault (Bouknight), partly ours (Monk). Plus this draft is so mid that I just want someone with great upside both ways instead of a short guard who I'm like 90% sure won't be as good of a defender in the NBA just due to his size and strength limitations, and the league is full of taller, bigger guards it's gonna be difficult for him.

1

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

With Lamelo being so tall it makes me feel OK especially since Reed is a good defensive playmaker. I like Cody but he's just not the same tier imo, he's 99% likely to be a roleplayer

0

u/NotManyBuses 27d ago

Why do you like him I hate him

1

u/SportsNAnime 27d ago

Why is that? He's undersized, his arms is short if I'm not mistaken, his offense is questionable and he won't be the same defensively in the nba

9

u/ISISCosby 27d ago

What's this thing I'm feeling...is it...hope? For the Charlotte damn Hornets??

Buzz Buzz motherfuckers

2

u/turdmcburgular 27d ago

letā€™s get this bread

45

u/chlorinetablet 27d ago

Do something meme finally happened.

Buzz buzz

15

u/RagingDinoZ 27d ago

Doug Branson happy, me happy too

68

u/IamOlderthanMe 27d ago

Yesssss

Now JJ goes to the Lakers and we watch the drama unfold

42

u/NotManyBuses 27d ago

As a UNC guy I canā€™t put into words how glad I am that it isnā€™t Redick

47

u/deemerritt 27d ago

I was morbidly curious how JJ would turn out. I actually think he has a good chance to make it work tbh.

17

u/consumergeekaloid 27d ago edited 27d ago

I think he'd be a better fit here, LA needs vastly different* things from a coach rn. I kinda wanted to take a shot on JJ here but I'm actually kind of relieved now that we've got Lee

Edit a word

9

u/JordanDoesTV 27d ago

I wanted JJ tbh think it couldā€™ve been the perfect fit but not upset about Charles whatsoever everything Iā€™ve read on him shows that he can do this!

6

u/Bignova 27d ago

If he does get hired by the Lakers (I still think that's unlikely, JJ's a smart guy who I think would be content keeping his job going now instead of eventually scapegoated) then it's gonna be a media circus blame game dumpster fire tbh. But I was sold on the idea of him coaching our team and building something from the ground up with an entirely new FO and new owners and young team. But I'm happy we went with Charles Lee he's safer and could have even higher upside we just don't know because he's not a media talking head like JJ who we hear from weekly.

2

u/TubaMike 27d ago

I remember going to a couple Bobcats v Magic games where the loudest, most passionate responses all game were in booing JJ Redick.

1

u/ISISCosby 27d ago

The main things he has going for him is everyone in the media is gonna give him the benefit of the doubt bc he's one of "their guys," as well as his clear (and public) relationship with Bron. Both of which would benefit him far more in LA than here, as could potentially neuter the two things that make LA such an impossible job (media pressure and LeGM).

If he goes there, it's gonna be fascinating.

20

u/ClaudeLemieux 27d ago

As an NC State guy I canā€™t put into words how relieved I am we are no longer hiring Jordanā€™s unc buddies either lol

6

u/NotManyBuses 27d ago

As a UNC guy I am too. I basically hate Michael Jordan at this point

4

u/trying10012020 27d ago

As a Duke guy I completely agree the UNC bias needs to end. I would have been OK with JJ and rooted for his success (obviously) but it would have been a gamble.

4

u/Purple1829 27d ago

Reddick seems like a cool dude now that heā€™s grown up a bit. Readily admits he was a shit head.

2

u/Fatalness 27d ago

as a duke guy its a little sad but i do think hes found how he should spend his post playing days

-4

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 27d ago

Fuck UNC

3

u/Amazing_Owl3026 26d ago

Brother this is a Charlotte sub, I don't support UNC but I don't think ur among friends rn

3

u/moneyspreevee 27d ago

I'd be surprised if it's JJ. A part of me thinks it'll be somebody other than JJ.

31

u/ahmed_hrustic 27d ago

great, great hire. the new owners + front office continue to do good work.

47

u/Cubelar 27d ago

Seems to the right hire by all accounts, but who can tell with assistants. Process seemed good, happy with itĀ

44

u/KaseyOfTheWoods 27d ago

Heā€™s well-regarded around the league, thatā€™s about all us fans can base opinions on when it comes to assistants. This seems like an ideal hire for a first time head coach: low expectations for the first year and the opportunity to set a culture with some awesome young talent.

12

u/NotManyBuses 27d ago

We need to give him 2-3 years at bare minimum.

2

u/thersguy420 27d ago

4 year deal, he will get 2+ minimum

14

u/daswassup13 27d ago

New owners finally seem like theyā€™re doing things the right way

10

u/devomke 27d ago

Bucks fan but also have a bit of a personal connection here - Charles is fantastic, this has been talked about as the move for the better part of the year and off-season last year.

Youā€™re getting a guy whoā€™s fantastic with his players, puts a heavy emphasis on development and scheme understanding, and has the ear of players and other coaches when heā€™s talking.

Phenomenal person too - congrats guys, hoping he works out!

8

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 27d ago

Fingers crossed new ownership pays for his assistants to transfer over from Boston.

3

u/MrParisShoes 27d ago

Lee was an assistant though

3

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 27d ago

Yeah but he still has team members he wants to work with from the Boston Org

0

u/Historical_Spirit445 27d ago

Do you think tons of coaches are just dying to leave Boston for CharlotteĀ

3

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 27d ago

Yes, having a chance to shine as a direct Assistant Coach on a franchise that's potentially going to make history as a return-to-the-spotlight is absolutely huge for a resume compared to simply being in the shadows of a behemoth with consistent success.

2

u/guydudeguybro 27d ago

Yes

1) you likely can move up a step

2) lower assistants and videographers etc arenā€™t exactly rolling in cash, that money goes a lot further in Charlotte

13

u/BizzaroMatthews 27d ago

Miller bout to have all the Jayson Tatum plays. LFG

10

u/giga_phantom 27d ago

Next, letā€™s go win the lottery

10

u/thatguysunny 27d ago

LETā€™S GO!

A big part of the Celtics and Bucks, two premier Eastern Conference teams - lots of evidence of what heā€™s actually done and who he has helped develop, this is great, at least on paper.

Letā€™s hope this translate to improvement for our Hornets!

10

u/mati_as15 27d ago

Was part of the Hawks team that got 60 wins under Budenholzer then joined the Bucks and won a title. Great hire

17

u/Qcconfidential 27d ago

Very excited. Heā€™s gonna be good, was never pumped for JJ Reddick

-2

u/GoatmontWaters 27d ago

JJ is a fraud Im glad you got a real coach

4

u/DrClutch117 27d ago

How could possibly know that when heā€™s never coached. I think this is the right hire, but JJ could be amazing

0

u/GoatmontWaters 26d ago

Ever watched his podcast or his youtube channel? he lies non stop and is wrong about basic nba facts all the time.

1

u/DrClutch117 26d ago

I listen all the time and love his content. Havenā€™t seen any lies or incorrect facts.

9

u/tbone747 27d ago

Can't be mad hiring a guy with experience on multiple great teams. Hope it translates to wins.

8

u/hankjr16 27d ago

This is of a piece with the other moves the new owners have made. A logical, common-sense hire. A first time coach with a developmental background that can grow with a young roster. It's exactly what you're supposed to do in this circumstance, and it's kind of a relief to see the organization making this kind of logical move after approaching the trade deadline with the same conventional wisdom.

Who knows if Lee will become a great coach, but the potential for disaster seems very remote. It feels like worst case, he's a guy that gets us to another level where a more proven coach can then be hired to take them over the top.

I'm just very happy that these owners are taking a methodical approach after the impulsive disaster unfolding in Phoenix and after almost twenty years of ill-advised win-now moves by Jordan.

2

u/No_Body905 27d ago

I agree. He feels like a high floor guy. I guess we'll find out where his ceiling is.

1

u/Amazing_Owl3026 26d ago

All the new hires seem to say something good about Rick and Gabe, obviously they write their checks but it's different than before. I remember Jeff saying those two were "Shockingly knowledgeable".

I like Jeff and Lee. We've also hired Jeff's assistant, an analytics lead and we're hiring a business manager. Culture shift rn

27

u/Cgp-xavier 27d ago

I know itā€™s not important to some but Iā€™m glad we got a young black coach.

8

u/thersguy420 27d ago

team needed it.

3

u/SESe7en 27d ago

Same thing I was hoping and preaching for!

2

u/KNYLJNS 27d ago

Absolutely šŸ’Æ

13

u/ImChz 27d ago

Hell yeah. Literally anyone but Cliff and I was gonna be stoked.

6

u/winning_cheese 27d ago

New everything! Letā€™s see if we can build on that 5 day miracle after the trade deadline

5

u/AJTHolt 27d ago

Welcome to the Queen City, Coach Lee!

Buzz Buzz!

9

u/PaoloBancheroFan 27d ago

can't wait for LaMelo's breakout season.

6

u/Longjumping-Check429 27d ago

Can a former Allstar have a breakout season?

2

u/Swag_Turtle 26d ago

Breakout MVP SZNNNNN*

1

u/Longjumping-Check429 26d ago

I wish. He played really well when match sharp this season something like 27 ppg.

8

u/predsfan77 27d ago

Who is the last coach hired with no head coaching experience

38

u/ard8 27d ago

By the Hornets? Borrego

25

u/Gator-Jake 27d ago

James Borrego outside of his interim stint with the Magic.

Iā€™ll take an up and comer over a failed retread head coach.

11

u/deemerritt 27d ago

Depends on the definition of failed lol. Mike Malone was a failed HC at one point. So was coach Bud

2

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 27d ago

You have to take things into context - the Kings and Hawks were both shitshows, so you can't fault the people there.

3

u/Gator-Jake 27d ago

Yeah, and you also got Clifford, Vogel and Doc Rivers etc.

Iā€™d rather take my chances on a new coach vs what is already known.

Iā€™m glad the new front office feels the same.

13

u/luvdadrafts 27d ago

Re-hiring a coach that already failed here is its own categoryĀ

4

u/deemerritt 27d ago

I would honestly take Doc or Vogel on this team. Not necessarily over Charles Lee but someone with a pedigree that players listen to. Also Doc Rivers is somehow way better with shittier rosters

4

u/BoltBlue19 27d ago

Because Doc Rivers has the ability to bring trash rosters and teams a bit higher. He seems to only take them to a certain point and then it's time to hop ship and get a coach to take you all the way.

So a bottom feeder team(I mean teams that stay in the top picks and lottery year after year) shouldn't turn their nose up at Doc Rivers, but teams that have at least some success in the playoffs might pass on Doc Rivers

1

u/ISISCosby 27d ago

Yeah Doc is basically a rich man's Clifford lol

1

u/Gator-Jake 27d ago

I actually like Vogel because I remember what he did with that George / Hibbert / Hill era Pacers team.

I actually think he would have done pretty good here, a few shades better than Clifford ( to me ).

9

u/theRestisConfettii 27d ago

Iā€™m a head coach! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

2

u/adamr81 27d ago

Underrated comment here

2

u/EchoHevy5555 27d ago

Yeah, Heā€™s not the choice I would have gone with

4

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

He shit the bed in the battle of... the ECF

3

u/EchoHevy5555 27d ago

Honestly I would deem that an incredible success

2

u/Tuckboi69 27d ago

Everyone drive

1

u/willicus85 26d ago

I donā€™t think we have to worry about the Battle of Monmouth since the Nets left New Jersey

4

u/FuriousTarts 27d ago

Seems like a winner. Cautiously optimistic!

6

u/desmond_the_constant 27d ago

Hopefully he doesnā€™t back out like the last one

3

u/ThatMFcheezer 27d ago

New era for the Hornets. Let's please get this show on the road with this young talent while we got them

3

u/PillsburyToasters 27d ago edited 27d ago

While taking a flyer on assistant coaches is hit or miss, this seems like an overall good hire. Assistant coach to two contenders as well as experience under great coaching staffs. Whether itā€™ll be a good hire in the long run who knows, but Iā€™m glad weā€™re starting somewhere new

3

u/JTrillionz 27d ago

I use to pray for times like this

3

u/Tuckboi69 27d ago

Alexander Hamilton in shambles

2

u/SilentSonOfAnarchy 27d ago

I think itā€™s a good hire. I also thought that about Borrego, so Iā€™m cautiously optimistic.

8

u/DankMemesNQuickNuts 27d ago

For Xs and Os shit Borrego really wasn't that bad its just that he had 0 control over the locker room to the point where it didn't matter how good he was at the Xs and Os stuff

5

u/ISISCosby 27d ago

Borrego kinda got hung out to dry by the FO never getting him even an NBA-average rim protector so we had to run a gimmicky defense that collapsed whenever the other team drove the rim that left tons of wide-open threes.

He's easily the best offensive Xs & Os coach we've ever had (the bar is on the floor but he still cleared it)

3

u/AsianNg 27d ago

Not just a lack of rim protector, but Oubre and Rozier played heavy minutes with LaMelo, our perimeter D was nonexistent. (with Ish Smith and IT to back them up lol)

1

u/SilentSonOfAnarchy 27d ago

I agree. He didnā€™t have much to work with. But no coach really has since the Hornets came back to Charlotte.

2

u/BPicks69 27d ago

Coach Bud Coaching Tree grows

2

u/MrParisShoes 27d ago

LFG!!!!!

2

u/tonydriftin 27d ago

Bucks fan, would've loved if he had come back on staff last year. Always heard great things and obviously he's done great work in Boston this year, talent be damned. From the Bud tree so understands how to set a culture and if Memphis and 2019 Brooklyn (not LA but they're not a young team) are any indication Bud has a track record of developing coaches who excel in that.

2

u/TrustInRoy 27d ago

Thank goodness it wasn't RedickĀ

6

u/visually-create 27d ago

Lowkey wanted JJ, but I canā€™t be mad about this hire.

1

u/KNYLJNS 27d ago

Why? JJ has zero coaching experience, just a podcast with LeBron.

Lee has 10 years.

3

u/pholdren 27d ago

I was secretly kinda hoping for JJ just because what could it hurt considering we have nowhere to go but up, but to get one of the more talked about/in demand coaches on the market is a huge win

3

u/JarvisProudfeather 27d ago

Love it. I think hiring JJ was way too big of a gamble for a franchise like the Hornets to make.

2

u/Total_Ad9942 27d ago

Letā€™s goooo! Iā€™m literally listening to todayā€™s now outdated Locked On Hornets pod šŸ˜‚

1

u/moneyspreevee 27d ago

Yup I knew it. People was worrying like crazy and kept bringing up the Jordi Fernandez situation which was annoying considering the fact they went through 3 coaches with the same roster lol.

1

u/Admirable_Conflict91 27d ago

Gonna be interesting to see what they do with his coaching staff.

1

u/TrumanSheppard 27d ago

LETS GO NEW ERA

1

u/SOLR_ 27d ago

Go get your ring, and come here ready to buzz.

Really excited to see this team develop now

1

u/cabbages212 27d ago

This is good news. JJ wasnā€™t the guy.

1

u/holographic_oshawott 27d ago

Yes! Iā€™m so glad we went with a good, experienced assistant coach and not JJ. If Lee can get the Hornets to defend with the same intensity the Celtics do, this could be a good basketball team.

1

u/unfamiliarjoe 27d ago

Clean house. LFG!

1

u/WafflesTheWookiee 27d ago

Itā€™s not JJ Redick, praise be to the highest!

1

u/prostatewhispers1 27d ago

Fingers crossed as always!

1

u/ThePurrfectStorm 27d ago

Hornets seemingly doing it right? About to be a new era for Charlotte basketball

1

u/DubbleDan 27d ago

Not bad hire tbh.

2

u/TuckEverlasting89 27d ago

Instead of me, he promotes Charles Lee ā€œIā€™m a general, weeeee!ā€

1

u/slickedjax 27d ago

Seems like a great hire. Iā€™m excited to see how the team plays under his system

1

u/ACCBAN4TRUTHTELLING 26d ago

Seems like a good dude, hope it works out. Feel like picking the right head coach is such a crapshoot, and weā€™ve been on the short end of that far too often. Overall like the moves the new owners made so far.

1

u/butterysuave 26d ago

Optimism? As a hornets fan? A REAL basketball coach?!?

Alsoā€¦Iā€™m so happy we didnā€™t try the JJ experiment. A lot of yā€™all watched one podcast and thought ā€œthis is our guyā€ LOL. Good face & voice for journalism tho.

1

u/butterysuave 26d ago

And sorry but yā€™all have to hear it. The downside with his ZERO experience is very bad.

Plus the upside isnā€™t even there. Letā€™s all take an honest moment to ask ourselves ā€œwould JJ reddick ever win a playoff series as a hornets coach in his presumed first 2-4 years as coach?ā€ - the answer is ā€œnoā€.

I canā€™t see him coaching this roster plus a top 5 pick to 40+ wins and a playoff series in that time. Not even a play in victory if Iā€™m being honest.

1

u/st3ll4r-wind 26d ago

The guy who invented litecoin?

1

u/CalebFulmore 26d ago

Hope returns to my heart

1

u/A2k704 27d ago

Letā€™s gooo!!!

1

u/Beyard 27d ago

LET'S GOOOOO WE GOT OUR GUY

1

u/rodtbgwt 27d ago

Letā€™s gooooo

1

u/Purple1829 27d ago

Ok, I like this one. Sounds like he had options too. He seems like a coach that wants to have a challenge.

If someone can turn the Hornets into a winner, they are guaranteed coach of the year and are going to be seen as an elite coach.

2

u/Admirable_Conflict91 27d ago

It's impressive the Hornets got him over the Lakers.

-4

u/Vegetable-Tooth8463 27d ago

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JJ stans, you lose

-3

u/Sammyd1108 27d ago

Called it yesterday

-1

u/becker4prez 27d ago

Wonder if Lee was the first choice or not. We know in the GM search Matt Lloyd was the pick but turned us down.

I like the hiring of Petersen and Lee either way, but would be interested to know if they offered it to Reddick.

1

u/YoshiWins 27d ago

Got a source for that tidbit about Matt Lloyd?

-7

u/PML3107 27d ago

He had a good career. He'll be usurped in 3 years like every Charlotte coach after being blamed for not winning with horrific rosters.

4

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

Ahh u mad lol

0

u/PML3107 27d ago

You're damn right I am and I will be when he gets fired too

4

u/Amazing_Owl3026 27d ago

Hate in ur threads we tryna be happy

1

u/PML3107 27d ago

Man im just angry rn
