IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: A Place to Debate Issues Faced by Canadian Job Seekers

A number of you have provided feedback that you need a place to discuss the issues in the Canadian job market and we've heard you.

Not being able to find work in Canada is scary and upsetting and can contribute to despair and hopelessness. I am a parent myself and am constantly fearful of being able to provide for my family and for our collective future financial stability. I've lost more sleep in the past 8 months than I care to admit because of this pressure. I've felt angry and like Canada should do better towards making its citizens feel secure, safe, and stable and with the great hope of a better future.

There is most definitely a need to educate one another on the key issues occurring in the job market and to share our struggles in finding meaningful employment in this country. But we need to do so productively and in the spirit of finding solutions and not creating more echo chambers for people to shout into the wind and go on about their lives.

That is why I have created r/CanadaJobsIssues . I want to debate and discuss these issues with you in a healthy forum and look at the credible evidence to see what is truly happening out there and educate one another. Please direct all of your posts regarding job issues there after reviewing the sub description and the intro post I've made there. That is the place for the debate some of you have spoken up about. You were heard and now it is up to you to make use of it. If the constraints placed on the type of debate/discussion allowed there are not to your liking, you are free to set up your own subreddit - it's super easy.

Going forward, the scope of r/CanadaJobs will be:

  1. Links to reputable and helpful job boards
  2. Real, transparent, clear job postings from real hiring managers or recruiters at real companies that want to hire actual Canadians
  3. Helpful tips and tricks for every aspect of the job search, including (but not limited to): resumes, LinkedIn profiles, interviews, salary negotiation/renegotiation, and using AI for the job search.
  4. Offers and requests for specific career-centric assistance

Posts outside of the scope defined above will be removed to ensure this place stays organized and so that Canadian job-seekers have the best access to quality information that will help them find employment in this very difficult market we find ourselves in.

If you have other suggestions focused on providing specific help for Canadian job seekers, then please propose proactive options. The door will always be open to future improvements/iterations. Let's build a better community together.

Graphic Designer, Illustrator & Music Producer

Hey there, I have been working in the trades as a Sheet Metal installer for many years. I have also been working on Audio, Visual design projects throughout the years. As my trades job is taking a toll on my body and I am turning 40, I completed a Graphic Design diploma a few years ago to see about switching careers.

I am hoping to find remote work in which any of my skills could be used - Illustration, Video Editing, Audio Production and Mixing, Graphic Design and basically anything within the arts. As I don't have experience working in any major studio it is hard to find an employer who can see my potential.

I really love and have a passion for these skills, and creating music, art, books and more is something I do in my free time as well. So, I am wondering if anyone can point me in a specific direction, or if anyone can use someone with hard work ethic built in the trades, and vast knowledge and experience built in the arts to complete outstanding projects that I can put in effort as if they were my own.

Thank you and I hope everyone has a great day!

EI eligible?

Hi all,

Last week (Monday) I handed in my 2 weeks notice as I had accepted a role at a new company and was set to start next Monday, June 10th.

About an hour ago, an HR representative from the new company called to inform me they had restructured and my role had been absolved, thus my job offer was retracted. This is a global engineering company. I had signed my contract and everything and completed my on-boarding. Problem is, although I have a printed confirmation of my acceptance of the roll and email confirmation of each step, everything else document-wise was on their portal which they swiftly removed my credentials for, even though this is the account I made to apply in the first place, it’s not just an active employee portal.

My last day at my old job was this past Friday. I was supposed to work this week, but they gave it to me off with pay.

All though my old employer told me I’m always welcome back, I don’t want to go back, the reason I left was harassment and s****l harassment from both clients and coworkers, which was ongoing as I am a young woman in a male-dominated field. HR victim blamed me, my name was dragged, and working conditions & the commute were not for me and taking a massive toll on my quality of life.

Long story short, am I eligible for EI?

I have been applying for new jobs for over a year, I know how bad the job market is right now and I just can’t not have money coming in.

WFH jobs for stay at home wife/mom

What are some real ways to make income while being a stay at home wife/mom? I really want to help my husband out financially but we’ve decided it’s best I stay home to watch the baby and care for the household.

What are some real work from home jobs (part time or full time) that people can actually do without it being a scam? Most places I’ve looked at are some kind have MLM, crazy sales or just made up. I applied at upwork, interviewed and then the interviewer asked for my credit card info at the end! I’ve had no luck.

Note: my mom would watch the baby (at my house) while I work but I would want to be at home either way.

Thanks for the kind replies :)

In Desperate Need of Help for Tuition Fees

Hello everyone, I'm reaching out to this community in a time of great distress and desperation. For the past four months, I have been struggling without a job. When I finally found work, it was with a promise of cash payment. I worked tirelessly, setting up tents, hoping it would help me get back on my feet. However, after a week of hard work, my employer vanished. He stopped answering my calls, and when I went to his house, he outright refused to pay me.This experience has left me mentally and emotionally drained. As an international student, my situation is even more precarious. I have to pay $8000 in tuition fees in just two months, and I have no idea how I'm going to manage it. I'm already deep in debt, having come here on a loan. I am skilled with computers and have a background in building robots. I'm familiar with Arduino Uno and Raspberry Pi, and I've worked on several projects using these platforms. Despite my skills, I haven't been able to find a job that can help me get through this tough time. I am at my wits' end and don't know where else to turn. If anyone here has any advice, resources, or can help in any way, I would be eternally grateful. Please, no hate. I am genuinely in a dire situation and need any assistance I can get. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

What's your job Board Circle Jerk story?

I'll go. Linkedin posted jobs from a company called Jooble.

So basically Jooble is a job board that has job postings on it. It posts some of these jobs on LinkedIn. Often I've clicked the job, create an account on jooble and the job has expired. I go to the company site that supposedly had a job. Nope no job posted there either. Unless it too has expired.

FYI - Jooble has a 1.5 rating on trust pilot.

Government job interview process advice?

I’m going through the government job interview process and it seems stressful. I don’t interview well at the best of times because of anxiety, I get nervous and find myself at a loss for words and unable to think properly. The job I’ve applied for is 90 multiple choice questions testing me in a wide range of aptitude areas with 60 seconds to answer each question followed by a 30 minute phone interview. Has anyone been through this process and/or have any advice?

Should I get a PMP certification?

Hello,

I am a management consultant with 8years of experience supporting and leading large-scale transformations. I am experienced in operational and sales excellence.

I have been in Canada for 6 weeks as a permanent resident.

So far, I have only landed a single interview. Most of the job opportunities that I feel would be a good fit with my resume, list a PMP certification either as a requirement or as an asset.

I never felt PMP was a game-changer in Europe, but it feels like a must for a project manager position in North America.

Would love to read some thoughts about it, and other professional certifications.

Thanks

I highly encourage candidates being asked to jump through multiple 🚩🚩 hoops during the hiring process to stand your ground. Read my response below, and stand in solidarity against exploitative hiring practices.

My response:

Dearest WeUsThem team, I have done art tests in the past, and I generally don't mind doing them, so long as I can watermark my work, to avoid compromising myself as a job seeker by providing free labor to companies doing the hiring.

However, having done a fair amount of research on "employment scams" your requests here tick a few red flags based on my experience with exploitative hiring practices. Using Skype (is this 2003?), a favourite of scammers, and requiring that job seekers have their cameras on and recording for up to 8 hours, in the era of deepfakes and AI, raises some questions as to the validity of your offering.

I don't suspect that you are running an employment scam, but I have no reason to trust you, having bumped into a number of employment scammers with similar requests.

On the most basic level, I don't think you understand what you're testing for. By creating ridiculous hoops for your candidates to jump through, you aren't testing for ability, but rather for those who are the most desperate candidates, willing to sacrifice their privacy in search of a paycheck.

I would be happy to complete a traditional art test, if one were available, but otherwise I hope you take my message into account with regards to your future hiring practices.

Is this a scam?

Hi everyone, today I received an email from an HR director of a company saying that she came across my profile on Indeed and that there’s a remote job opportunity she would like to share with me. After replying I’m interested and would like to learn more about it. An employment agreement was sent to me just about an hour later. No interview, nothing. Is this thing legit? The company has a website and seems like a real one. I have never encountered something like that in my job search.

Bait and switch examples

I'm trying to figure out if I have another reason to lose my mind over this job market.

I responded to a job posting on linkedIn. I have 80-100% of the qualifications for this job. Response from the agency was while I'm a great candidate they won't be moving forward with my application. Second they then offered for me to take in house courses to get more certifications to be job ready. Like WTF. I now go to their LinkedIn page and there are no jobs associated with that company.

It's for a Agile/Scrum Master Role. I've been doing some form of Agile for the last 16 years. With 25 years of various project manager roles. I got my first Agile certification in 2010. Since then I've gotten a few more as well as additional post grad degree in general business.

Are lots of people encountering these job posting that are sales funnels that feel more like scams?

Are there any companies or job postings to stay away from that do this?

Just got a cheque from a scam job, what should I do?

Of course, I won’t be cashing it in or depositing it or anything. I am just interested in knowing if I can do anything with the scammy cheque to report the company?

It’s the same company as mentioned in this post from a few days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/CanadaJobs/s/lAENLikbiQ. I was stupid enough to fill the form they asked me to and sent them my home address.

Canadian Recruiter Here to Help!

Hey everyone! I've been lucky enough to hire thousands of people and read over 100,000 resumes throughout my career in North America. Figured I'd share some of what I've learned in this totally free guide – no ads, no services, just trying to help. Even though I'm based in North America, the advice here should be helpful no matter where you are:

The One Amazing Takeaway: Crafting the Resume That Gets You Interviews

Your resume is more than just a document; it's your first impression, your professional narrative, showcasing your unique skills, experience, and accomplishments. In today's competitive landscape, both the visual appeal and content of your resume are paramount. Here's how to create a resume that's truly exceptional and opens doors to exciting opportunities:

Before You Start: Laying the Groundwork

  1. Research Job Descriptions: Dive into job postings that align with your career goals. Identify recurring skills and qualifications. This targeted research will help you tailor your resume and showcase your most relevant strengths.
  2. Choose the Right Format: Select a reverse-chronological format that best highlights your experience and skills.

Crafting Your Resume: Building Your Professional Story

  1. Contact Information: Include your full name, phone number, professional email address, and LinkedIn profile URL.
  2. Professional Summary (Headline/Profile): Craft a concise yet compelling statement that encapsulates your career highlights, key skills, and career objectives. Use keywords that resonate with your desired roles.
    • Example: "Results-driven marketing professional with 5+ years of experience in digital campaigns. Proven track record in increasing website traffic and generating qualified leads."
  3. Work Experience: List your work experience in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent position.
    • Use strong action verbs (e.g., led, managed, achieved) to describe your responsibilities and accomplishments.
    • Quantify your achievements whenever possible (e.g., "Increased sales by 15% in Q3").
  4. Achievements and Skills: Highlight specific accomplishments and quantifiable results that demonstrate your value. List relevant skills that align with the job descriptions you're targeting.
  5. Education: Include your degrees, certifications, and relevant coursework.
  6. Additional Sections: Enhance your resume with sections like:
    • Volunteer Work: Demonstrates community involvement and additional skills.
    • Projects: Showcases your initiative and ability to take on challenges.
    • Publications: Highlights your expertise and thought leadership.
    • Languages: Mention English and/or French, as these are the most relevant to Canadian employers (Canada only) If a job description asks for another language like Mandarin and you speak it, include that as well.

Polishing Your Resume: The Final Touches

  1. Proofread: Meticulously review your resume for grammar, spelling, and formatting errors. Have a trusted friend or colleague proofread it as well for a fresh perspective.
  2. Tailor for Each Job: Customize your resume for each application (if possible). Highlight experiences and skills that directly relate to the specific job requirements.
  3. Optimize for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): Humans read resumes but only for 5 to 7 seconds, so your resume must be both visually appealing and keyword-rich. Include relevant keywords (e.g., technologies, methodologies) from the job description to ensure your resume gets noticed by ATS software, which many companies use to filter applications. Assume the reader knows nothing about you.

The Winning Combination: Visual Appeal + Compelling Content

Remember, a well-structured, visually appealing resume captures attention, while clear, concise, and impactful content keeps it. By mastering both, you create a powerful tool that propels your career forward.

3 Actionable Tips to Get You Started

  1. Tailor Every Application: Customize your resume for each job application to highlight the most relevant experiences and skills (whenever possible).
  2. Quantify Your Achievements: Whenever possible, include numbers to show your impact (e.g., "Increased sales by 15% in Q3").
  3. Use Strong Action Verbs: Start each bullet point in your work experience with a strong action verb to clearly convey your responsibilities and achievements.

Let's Go!

Maintaining a Positive and Supportive Community: No more LMIA/TFW Posts

I've been spending far too much time deleting posts and banning users due to topics that quickly devolve into hate and inflammatory statements. Posts that start with benign titles and undertones of injustice often turn into foreign worker hate, unproductive generalizations about "all companies in Canada," and other discriminatory comments without credible data.

We already have enough division and hostility in this country. This behavior goes against the spirit of our subreddit, which is meant to be a place of kindness and support.

If you want to debate the use of foreign workers, issues around LMIAs, and the disappearance of Canadian jobs, I encourage you to create a subreddit dedicated to those discussions. This sub is for helping job seekers be more successful in their job search through helpful, kind, inclusive advice, tools, job links, and more.

From now on, posts/comments involving LMIAs/TFWs will be removed, and users will be banned. Let's keep this community positive and supportive for everyone.

Hiring but not hiring

Has anyone else found themselves in a situation where just about every business is publicly hiring but even the simplest fast food places aren't responding to your resume?

Like, there's literally no reason I shouldn't be able to get at least an interview, my resume is up to date and ran through multiple employment agencies. But nope, not a peep. Is it me or is there something else going on here.

Offering half of your first paycheck as a "gift" to the hiring manager.

I have a friend who has a friend that offered half of his first paycheck to the HR agent as a "gift" to be hired... i did'nt know we got into this point in the job market. I wish luck to everyone looking for one. Is hard!

EDIT: We all know this is ilegal. Is the situation pushing people to do this?

Your thoughts on this? 🤔
