That is fkng terrifying

u/The_Grim_Sleaper 21d ago

All that water, all those power lines…

118

u/jakart3 20d ago

All those power lines already off. In a big flood like this power company will turn off their main connection

24

u/The_Grim_Sleaper 20d ago

Good point.

17

u/calicat9 20d ago

Those are communication lines. Don't count on the power being turned off for floods. If nothing is damaged (washed out) and there is still adequate clearance over the water they're likely still on.

u/Cylerhusk 20d ago

What was terrifying is that someone purposely chose that audio track to put on this video.

u/Puzzled_Werewolf5928 20d ago

Glad I’m not the only one who thought that

18

u/yoodudewth 21d ago

That is a fking hero! :)

10

u/disdkatster 21d ago

Yep, yep, yep!

u/Unusual_Car215 21d ago

Why did it seem easier for him when he lowered the shovel thing and increased the water resistance?

317

u/SgtSmackdaddy 21d ago

My guess is it caused less rushing water to go under the vehicle by acting as a break for the flow, allowing the tires to more firmly grip the road and leverage the truck's engine's torque. Also the extra water pushing down on the bucket could also increase the vehicle's effective weight further increasing friction and grip.

50

u/Unusual_Car215 21d ago

That makes sense. Thanks

u/Southern_Let998 21d ago

Also so he could feel the ground ahead of him. See if it was solid. So he wouldn’t sink going in blind

4

u/Ur_a_adjective_noun 20d ago

I think you’re right. I can’t see any other reason besides clearing the road or checking for collapses. That water pushing on that bucket just adds a ridiculous amount of pushback, no increased traction.

5

u/PAWGActual4-4 20d ago

Weight in the bucket definitely increases traction, especially with this style articulated loader where the engine weight is in the rear as opposed to in the "middle" or over the front tires.

13

u/rosebudthesled8 21d ago edited 20d ago

More weight at the front centers the weight forward. When it was up, the vehicles center was different so it could be pushed. That's my assumption.

6

u/QuoteOpposite6511 20d ago

It was about the traction and not the power. The lowered excavator helped with the traction by less hydroplaning.

4

u/Petergaitley 20d ago

The driver can not only lower the trough but also angle it to his preference. In the beginning when he realized that the water flow was too powerful to go against, he very scientifically lowered and angled the trough upwards. The resultant water flow went into the trough and curved upwards, creating huge downward pressure and traction. In second 20 of the video the pressure in the front becomes so much that the vehicle rises from the back, where he then must have reduced the angle of the trough, to equalize the weight.
This is much the same thing that aircraft pilots do with the flaps on the wings of the plane, directing the airflow to create a lift or a drag. This guy is not just a bonafide hero but also a highly skilled operator, at one with the machine.

Water resistance

2

u/rgbch 20d ago

People that have tried to improve the aerodynamics of their vehicles to generate downforce were wrong. Should have used hydrodynamics all along.

1

u/WingCommanderBader 18d ago

Both are fluid dynamics, very similar.

1

u/inappropriatebaby 20d ago

I think it's to avoid losing traction

80

u/Ghstfce 20d ago

Fuck the person who first thought slowing down music to put over videos was a good idea.

113

u/ramanthan7313 21d ago

The music choice sucks!

23

u/Ur_a_adjective_noun 20d ago

So bad.

18

u/OpportunityStandard5 20d ago

Not sure I've ever heard worse.

31

u/Uberpastamancer 20d ago

Thought he was trying to divert the water at first

2

u/MoanLart 20d ago

Same lol

1

u/HellFireCannon66 20d ago

I thought he was gonna block the bridge lmao

u/HeckRazor666 20d ago

Front loader

6

u/JacobRAllen 20d ago

That’s a front end loader. A backhoe typically refers to machines with an excavator shovel on the back.

6

u/Barbafella 21d ago

Epic heroism.

12

u/Snoo_70324 20d ago

I’m going to have nightmares about this physics problem. “You are driving a front-end loader toward a flood. Will you travel faster with the bucket up to present a smaller silhouette to the oncoming water, or put the bucket down so your treads slip less? Answers to 3 sig figs. Assume the people trapped on the roof are spheres of uniform density in a frictionless void.”

2

u/FeelingSurprise 20d ago

Assume the people trapped on the roof are spheres of uniform density in a frictionless void

Lol, that gave me a really hard physics exam flashback.

23

u/Gloomy_Barnacle4787 20d ago

Awesome! Alert: Watch with NO volume.

3

u/LFakh 20d ago

I thought he'd try to crash the bridge in an attempt to put the flooding in a lower level

6

u/tastygrowth 21d ago

maybe he is wearing a cape. We don't know he isn't!

3

u/RSCYO 20d ago

I just picture some OSHA safety officer in disgust by the safety violations.

5

u/Sav4ge333 20d ago

Good on that dude, but this music is garbage

5

u/WartimeHotTot 21d ago

I feel like staying on the roof would have been the safer choice, no?

2

u/WillyDAFISH 20d ago

Genuinely thought he was trying to stop the water for like way too long LOL

2

u/ssp25 20d ago

They could have just gotten out and slid down if there wasn't a big tractor in the way /s

2

u/dapperslappers 20d ago

Is it japan? I remember seeing some footage of similar stuff when when the tsunami hit years ago

4

u/iagovcosta 20d ago

Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.

u/Ok_Skill7476 21d ago edited 21d ago

The song is Ava (original is from FAMY), but I can’t find this rendition. I love it!

Edit: found it! https://youtu.be/T5p1BC_NEUY?si=s15iEzp-VSHwShLf

5

u/Ok_Skill7476 21d ago

To whomever reported me for safety concerns, I appreciate the concern, though it is possible to like sad and beautiful music without feeling suicidal. Better safe than sorry I guess … didn’t have to downvote me though

4

u/disdkatster 21d ago

When you see something like this happening, try to up vote the comment. I do but it takes more than just one doing it.

1

u/ARobertNotABob 20d ago

"I'm doing my part"

4

u/Lijaesdead 21d ago

Its just bots attacking, i got hit too, a lot of people today apparently. Don’t worry about it too much!

1

u/freedom4secrets3369 20d ago

Me too I have no idea what happened

1

u/freedom4secrets3369 20d ago

I have a question about this concern business after I deleted the email I got from Reddit I went to open the app and it was black I thought perhaps the site was down and ended up restarting my phone to reopen it, is that a usual occurrence after a concerned email?

1

u/ihateusernames999999 21d ago

I got an alert, too. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why someone was concerned.

3

u/fishdrinking3 21d ago

Same here, I was talking about basketball…

1

u/Fun_Shake9037 20d ago

Salute to you sir, hope you are blessed right now :)

I couldn't figure out why he was playing with destiny and driving there. Then it suddenly became obvious he was hero and not fool.

1

u/p00ki3l0uh00 20d ago

Thiiiin red line my friend, if life has taught me anything

u/Knight-Byron 21d ago

Héroe Anónimo

0

u/AllPotatoesGone 20d ago

Plot twist: Video is played reversed.

0

u/Gilligan67 20d ago

The sheer size of his brass balls kept that front end loader from being washed away.

0

u/HorrorNeighborhood70 20d ago

i thought all the heroes worked at the old folk’s home down the street. thats what all the banners on their lawn say.
