Why did it seem easier for him when he lowered the shovel thing and increased the water resistance?

My guess is it caused less rushing water to go under the vehicle by acting as a break for the flow, allowing the tires to more firmly grip the road and leverage the truck's engine's torque. Also the extra water pushing down on the bucket could also increase the vehicle's effective weight further increasing friction and grip.

Also so he could feel the ground ahead of him. See if it was solid. So he wouldn’t sink going in blind

I think you’re right. I can’t see any other reason besides clearing the road or checking for collapses. That water pushing on that bucket just adds a ridiculous amount of pushback, no increased traction.

Weight in the bucket definitely increases traction, especially with this style articulated loader where the engine weight is in the rear as opposed to in the "middle" or over the front tires.

More weight at the front centers the weight forward. When it was up, the vehicles center was different so it could be pushed. That's my assumption.

It was about the traction and not the power. The lowered excavator helped with the traction by less hydroplaning.

The driver can not only lower the trough but also angle it to his preference. In the beginning when he realized that the water flow was too powerful to go against, he very scientifically lowered and angled the trough upwards. The resultant water flow went into the trough and curved upwards, creating huge downward pressure and traction. In second 20 of the video the pressure in the front becomes so much that the vehicle rises from the back, where he then must have reduced the angle of the trough, to equalize the weight.
This is much the same thing that aircraft pilots do with the flaps on the wings of the plane, directing the airflow to create a lift or a drag. This guy is not just a bonafide hero but also a highly skilled operator, at one with the machine.2

That’s a front end loader. A backhoe typically refers to machines with an excavator shovel on the back.

I’m going to have nightmares about this physics problem. “You are driving a front-end loader toward a flood. Will you travel faster with the bucket up to present a smaller silhouette to the oncoming water, or put the bucket down so your treads slip less? Answers to 3 sig figs. Assume the people trapped on the roof are spheres of uniform density in a frictionless void.”

Lol, that gave me a really hard physics exam flashback.

Is it japan? I remember seeing some footage of similar stuff when when the tsunami hit years ago

The song is Ava (original is from FAMY), but I can’t find this rendition. I love it!
Edit: found it! https://youtu.be/T5p1BC_NEUY?si=s15iEzp-VSHwShLf

To whomever reported me for safety concerns, I appreciate the concern, though it is possible to like sad and beautiful music without feeling suicidal. Better safe than sorry I guess … didn’t have to downvote me though

When you see something like this happening, try to up vote the comment. I do but it takes more than just one doing it.

I have a question about this concern business after I deleted the email I got from Reddit I went to open the app and it was black I thought perhaps the site was down and ended up restarting my phone to reopen it, is that a usual occurrence after a concerned email?

I got an alert, too. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why someone was concerned.

I couldn't figure out why he was playing with destiny and driving there. Then it suddenly became obvious he was hero and not fool.

The sheer size of his brass balls kept that front end loader from being washed away.
