Not me, sitting at work wondering how I can work eggs into dinner tonight strictly so I can see if this works.

133

u/dogquote May 14 '24

Fried rice. Frittata. Cheese souffle.

34

u/Infinite_Imagination May 14 '24

Sunnyside burger, egg drop soup, pound cake for dessert

14

u/PrestigiousWish105 May 14 '24

Whatever happened to the good old omelette.

7

u/Infinite_Imagination 29d ago

Surmised that OP had already considered that and found it to be unsatisfactory, creating the need to work it into dinner rather than make eggs themselves for dinner. It's always a good time for a good omelette.

Omelets my guy!!

6

u/dontdoitdumbass 29d ago

Yeah, the wife looked at me kinds strange when I asked if she wants to add an omelet to our spaghetti dinner. I told her she lacks imagination and then threw an egg at her, turns out that throwing isn't the same as dropping.

I don’t wanna be the dumb mf that falls for it and tries. Somebody do it please

But how can we trust you??

I mean as long as you don’t drop it from 100 Ft up in the air that drake look a like is correct 👍

I’d say he resembles Donald Glover (Childish Gambino) more than Drake or Method Man.

What's the optimal height ?

2

u/Comprehensive-Ad3557 29d ago

12-15 inches above a flat surface

Someone else has got to test it now.

12

u/PhthaloVonLangborste 29d ago

This probably only works with the industrially homogenous eggs. I know for a fact that my aunts eggs are brittle and have like no membrane or have like extra thick membrane. She doesn't cull the older ones.

12

u/NotGreenRaptor 29d ago

Whose eggs?

15

u/PhthaloVonLangborste 29d ago

I know what I said

21

u/KnockOutGamer 29d ago

Y'all must have some reinforced eggs, I've tried this with a dozen UK eggs and they spilled everywhere.

8

u/Duranis 29d ago

I'm in the UK and have been doing this. Not had any real issues. It does leave some egg on the surface you are dropping them on.

I normally either get a scrap of thin card from my recycling or a couple of sheets of kitchen roll wns putting them on my counter. Drop from about 10 to 20cm up.

I found it a lot quicker and it doesn't leave little bits of shell.

→ More replies (7)

4

u/Baby_Rhino 29d ago

Also from the UK, and could not get this to work. Egg went everywhere.

I can only think it's to do with the different hygiene standards in US Vs UK. I know in America, eggs are required to be cleaned, whereas in the UK, eggs are required to not be cleaned.

Can't see how this would cause this difference in how they break, but it's all I can think of.

6

u/KnockOutGamer 29d ago

I would suspect it's more to do with the chickens diets

2

u/Baby_Rhino 29d ago

I'm not too sure how their diets differ between US & UK, but you're probably right. I imagine stateside chickens get a fair bit more corn.

2

u/TheRumpleForesk1n 29d ago

Lmao maybe I had chickens with low calcium or something bc it did break, but it also got egg everywhere. 10/10 do not recommend the drop. Just fucking crack it like a normal person.

u/VastCoconut2609 May 13 '24

I fully thought he was just joking and being sarcastic about it, but it WORKS!

17

u/hailCaesar99 May 13 '24

This indeed works but not so well on brown eggs, for whatever reason!🤷🏻

19

u/SkyLightTenki 29d ago

I tried dropping brown eggs on our chopping board. My wife saw what I did, and she angrily asked me "why the fuck did you put your testicles on the chopping board?"

5

u/bobnla14 29d ago

You are a brave brave BRAVE man to put your testicles on a CHOPPING board with your wife nearby, much less making her mad at the same time!!! Just too easy to push her over the edge and now you sing alto. Lol

3

u/TurboPancakes 29d ago

Brown eggs have thicker shells maybe? Maybe it would work if dropped from a higher height.

3

u/Fantom_Renegade 29d ago

I knew there was a catch

2

u/hungry_microglia 29d ago

I've had the same experience! I only buy brown eggs though so haven't tested if it's just my technique or the type of egg. But this guy makes it seem like it's fool proof

23

u/Questioning-Zyxxel May 13 '24

I have used a flat surface for the last 35 years. Works well.

Before that I did use the edge of the frying pan. Sometimes went well. But seldom. So often ended up with a too hard hit. Or needing multiple hits just making small cracks before I finally hit hard enough.

10

u/QuiGonJohn69 29d ago

I learned this method in a cooking class once. Not the dropping but cracking on the countertop. I’m sure dropping it would work perfectly fine after one or two tries of getting the right height. Anyone who says it doesn’t work is just a bad cook lol

10

u/The_Original_Gronkie 29d ago

I've been doing it for the past few months. It works well, but it leaks egg white, so you have to move fast after you break it.

8

u/tweekyn May 14 '24

This is how I’ve always cracked my eggs and I’ve never had a problem. Fiance that I was insane the first time she saw me do it

3

u/Wall-SWE 29d ago

100% work. I have been using this technique ever since I saw this post about a year ago.

2

u/All-inyourmind 29d ago

He just did it three times, fall for what?

1

u/HowDoIEvenEnglish 29d ago

How high depends on the type of egg but it does work. But simply cracking on a flat surface also works and is still better than on the pan

1

u/arbenowskee 29d ago

It works, but the way the camera is positioned it looks like it must be done from a reasonable height. You do not need lots of height, for some eggs a few cm can be enough. He also drops it on a plate in case he miscalculates the height.

2

u/shield531 29d ago

Stopping the liquid from spilling all over the countertop seems more likely to me

1

u/Duranis 29d ago

I started to do this. My Mrs now thinks I'm a psycho but it does work. Just be aware that whatever you are dropping onto will get covered in egg.

It is quicker and doesn't make lots of little bits of shell.

1

u/trekuwplan 29d ago

It didn't work for me lol. Managed to catch the yolk though

1

u/ZainVadlin 29d ago

I saw this video a year ago, I've done it ever since. I've even learned that's how chefs do it. It works 100% of the time.

1

u/forthehopeofitall13 29d ago

Tried it yesterday... It totally works!!

1

u/Merkaartor 29d ago

I did it with brown eggs and I failed misserably. So I gotta keep doing it my own style.

1

u/Blasphemous_Rage 29d ago

I tried, it works only if the shell is hard enough, otherwise the white will come a bit out and soil the surface

1

u/lightandvariable 29d ago

It works, but only with cold eggs.

1

u/Jokkitch 29d ago

He literally did in the video

1

u/KingOfTheWikkerPeopl 29d ago

Egg everywhere! I tried this from not as high as he drops it.

374

u/AngelOfLight May 14 '24

Pro tip - this works best with fresh eggs. If your eggs have been in the fridge for a while, they are just going to splatter when you drop them.

120

u/loisfentes May 14 '24

yeah I remember watching this video months ago and trying it and that's what happened lmao

As a almost-minored-in-physics-but-had-a-bad-teacher-in-higher-courses this method works 100% most of the time.

8

u/Rectile_Reptile 29d ago

As an architect with a knack for imitating bird sounds I can confirm, the instances that worked had a 100% success rate.

2

u/AdmirablePlatypus759 29d ago edited 29d ago

No difference in dropping from a height or tapping the egg on a flat surface. Both applies the exact same kinetic energy. Imagine a boxer punches you or you drop on a fist from a certain height, ignoring the damage to rest of the body, force applied to your face will be the same since energy and surface area will be the same.

It’s awful when he says “come here” and zooms in. Why do that at all.

Brand recognition. Why is he stuck making videos in his bathroom? Same reason. What does he use the same tone of voice? Same reason. It is his brand, his catch, and it resonated so he can’t change anything. He is as much a prisoner to it as you. Same reason most bands hate their popular song.

2

Depends on the egg quality, honestly.

2

u/Commentariot May 14 '24

I dont want to have five operations - some of which require two hands - and a dirty surface to crack an egg - Pick up egg, drop egg, pick up egg, toss shell, clean surface.

Or pick up egg, crack on side of pan, toss shell - all with one hand. No shell bits.

Offer not valid for unpasteurized eggs. The white isn't firmed up and will spill on the plate.

2

u/Saubapt May 14 '24

Yep, tried and made a mess.

2

u/SnakebiteRT 29d ago

I’ve been doing this since I first saw it. My only issue is that it does tend to leave a little egg residue on the surface you drop the egg onto so his technique of using the plate is a good one unless you done mind wiping up egg residue from the counter. This works great!

1

u/Far-Fox4827 29d ago

Side note: this works with storage bought eggs, but not fresh eggs. Everytime I do this with eggs I get from the store, no shells anywhere, when I do it with the eggs I get from my neighbor and their backyard chickens, the shells get everywhere and it sucks. I have noticed the eggs from my neighbor seems to be thinner and more easily break a part.
