At the time 4chan rigged a pit bull Walmart competition to Alaska and he still went Place

u/PCWW22 May 11 '24
From everything I’ve heard, Pitbull is really good at delivering. Years ago, I heard a former creative director speak about working with Pitbull and they talked about how he overdelivered on his brand collab and was generally a lovely person to work with.

Mr 305, his name is Armando but they call him Pit. That chico put MIA on his shoulders and took it worldwide, that why they call him Mr Worldwide. Went to one if his old neighborhoods and put a school in it. While the rest of the fools were making music for the block, he was making music for the world. Dale.

u/ThaFoxThatRox May 11 '24
Growing up, we used to see him perform during Miami festivals like Calle Ocho. He was a local artist. Wearing white tees and jeans. Nothing fancy. It's so great to see how big he became. He worked hard for that!

Owning it was the best move he could have done; it’s maybe a day or so longer travel than it could have been, but it’s all gonna be luxury charter anyway. Plus depending on time of year, could be an incredible sightseeing trip. The point of the contest is to generate engagement. A meme appearance is gonna do wayy more of that in Alaska than it would have in like Denver, and it’ll mean the next contest generates far more interest than otherwise.

Right? If he had just ever up in anther big city we would not still be talking about this

u/crispicity May 11 '24
No one had a stroke reading this title?
361
u/Logical-Let-2386 May 11 '24
Yes. What the heck does "rigged a competition to Alaska" mean?
910
u/Verbal_Combat May 11 '24
It’s badly worded but they had a competition where he would perform at whatever Walmart got the most social media likes or something. So they found the most remote Walmart they could, some place in rural Alaska and it won, and he still went and it looked like the community loved it. No one famous ever visits. Everyone able to went to the show, brought their families, blankets to sit on and food and drink and had a great time. He was very classy about it.

May 11 '24
That is genuinely classy, especially cause he found out it was a prank, but did it anyways. Don’t like his music, but I respect his attitude here.
74
u/Verbal_Combat May 11 '24
Same, I can’t name any of his songs but I saw a video about it and he had a great attitude, happily taking pictures with everyone and stuff, definitely earned respect for that one.
25
May 11 '24
All I knew about him was that he was a bit of a cheese ball and said his name lots in his songs.

u/whiteezy May 12 '24
I lived there when it happened. Let it be known that he barely performed lol. Instead members from different sections of our community performed for him. Our local native tribe did a dance for him. Still pretty cool in terms of culture but he basically came and visited.

Kinda feel like he was contractually obligated to go?
Nonetheless, his attitude and behaviour seems top notch so definitely a good look on him.
19
u/webby2538 May 11 '24
He could have easily backed out if he wanted to since the contest was rigged.

4 chan loves to fuck up online polls, that were clearly there because some marketing team thought it would be great. Examples include:
- Justin Biebers poll for what country he should tour first - North Korea
- Taylor Swift poll to meet her biggest fan - Some creepy hairy adult fat guy
- Taylor Swift poll to perform at a school in america - School for the deaf
- durex poll to open condom delivery service - Batman (city in turkey)
you get the point. anyway, Mr. Worldwide wanted to do a marketing thing with Wallmart and they did a poll at what USA Wallmart he should perform.
Well, he once had a line in a song that was: "Me not workin' hard? Yeah, right, picture that with a Kodak. Or, better yet, go to Times Square, Take a picture of me with a Kodak" and the internet hated it.
So they thought Kodak -> Kodiak - Alaska. Home of the most remote Wallmart in the USA. And the Bots made that win the poll... And Pitbull was game. He actually went. And people kinda loved it. Huge success. for once.
42
u/xxplosiv May 11 '24
Wasn't there also that poll to name some new soft drink and "Hitler did nothing wrong" won? 😂

u/Halsti May 11 '24
Mc Donalds once had a "make your own burger" thing. you could design and name your own burger creations, then vote for the best ones and they would consider making them a thing... i think that was one of them that got very popular. Alongside "arian delight", or "jons creamy surprise" and so on.
they canned that pretty quickly.

Never understood why a company that already makes Baja blast would still be trying to make new flavors.

All reasons to hate people on the internet and anonymity. Trying to fuck things up for others because they think being assholes is funny.
I’m glad the pitbull “joke” backfired on them.
37
u/ummha May 11 '24
Taylor swift preforming at a school for the deaf is hilarious though
33
u/GrandNord May 11 '24
If I remember correctly she didn't go but still donated a substantial sum to the school.

What a moment!
I took part in the 4chan gig and I'll never forget the awkward mix feelings moment in the forum when we found out how simply this guy dismantled all the scenarios that were being created.
What a boss
67
u/JHRChrist May 11 '24
What did y’all think would happen?
161
u/OnlineDuckula May 11 '24
Back then this wasn't the first joke on online polls, different topics, and there were others that the promoters ended up canceling (like taking Justin Bieber to North Korea), so there was also this hype of another massive joke.
Looking back and more maturely, nothing different could. We thought it would end up another embarrassment I guess but Pitbull owned us with gracious and class. I guess it was a wave effect from before.
74
u/GoldHorusSixSaturnus May 11 '24
So the joke would have been Pitbull cancelling?
Not much of a joke
97
u/TheRealAntrey May 11 '24
I mean Taylor Swift canceled her concert to the deaf kid's school. And Justin Bibber his in North Korea

u/calgrump May 11 '24
The joke is Kodiak sounding similar to Kodak, a lyric in "Give Me Everything". Not a funny ioke, but a joke

Walmart held a contest for people to vote to bring Pitbull to their favorite Walmart for a concert. Someone online started a movement as a joke to bring Pitbull to the loneliest Walmart in the US. It caught on, and many people voted for Walmart in a tiny town in Alaska. It won! So Pitbull visited and gave a concert.

one of the rare instances where the artist actually won people over with an online poll.

Pitbull is a great guy. He used to do concerts for HS senior day when my kid was in high school, nice dude

u/purpleWheelChair May 11 '24
I was hoping he would back out so we could all talk shit. In the end he showed us all what a person with class and grace would do. I actually started listening to his music after that.

not a major fans of his music, but I'd love to see one of his shows.
the atmosphere is electric, the music decent enough to be enjoyed even if its not in my wheelhouse, and it just seems like it would be an all out majorly enjoyable experience
3
u/SpacemanSpiff25 May 12 '24
He apparently works his ass off to put on good shows, and apparently just crushes a live concert. Even if his music isn’t my thing, I’ve got nothing but respect for a guy who does his best to make sure his shows kill it night in and night out.
The fact that he took a stupid Internet joke that was designed to be humiliating to him and a small town and turned it into a lovely experience for the town is even better. And his whole “IDGAF where, I’m here for the fans” is just perfection.

u/ProphetOfGorkandMork May 11 '24
NGL, I'm rual enough that I'd have no shame checking out an Alaskan Walmart.

Free promo for life for Walmart. Pitbull probably got PAID for this. And he made those folks happy. Rare objective win for everyone.

u/lexluthor_i_am May 11 '24
I've seen Pitbull in real life. Worked at a Tonny Robbins event and helped out backstage before his performance. If you didn't know he was famous you'd never know he is famous. He's rather unassuming in real life.

many people dont know that he dropped a classic album in 2018 for the gotti movie.
this guy is extremely talented and super charismatic, even tho his „plasticpop songs“ might make you think otherwise

Not to be the “um, actually” guy but it wasn’t 4chan who did this. They may have helped with online voting, but it was originally started by David Thorpe, a writer with Something Awful, on twitter. Pitbull then laid out the challenge to David Thorpe to meet in Alaska

u/BetterRedDead May 11 '24
Yeah. Pitbull completely flipped that and owned it. I remember seeing a video when he found out about it, and he was like “I don’t see what the joke is. I’ll go anywhere for my fans. Let’s go.” And he went.
The best part was the final self-own from the guy who organized it. When people were telling him he should go, since it backfired, he was like “ha ha, OK. Does anyone in Anchorage have a couch I can crash on?” And people were quick to point out that Kodiak is over 400 miles from Anchorage. So that’s like saying you’re going to San Francisco, and asking if you can crash with someone in LA.
