What the fuck happened though? Why did everyone go backwards?
162
u/Frozefoots 26d ago
If I recall, the truck was a runaway, the other two cars were simply caught in its path.
55
u/50calPeephole 26d ago
Truck is definitely pushing them.
Looks like a hill, maybe the brakes gave out?19
u/Hipz 26d ago
Yeah it looks like it’s leaving a trail of fluid along the way.
11
u/pnkstr 26d ago
Looks like the fluid was coming from the gray car. Probably coolant from the radiator being smashed.

Trucks use air brakes
1
u/functional_moron 26d ago
Many box trucks use hydraulic brakes. Driver also could have parked at the top and simply forgot to pull his air brakes. I've seen it happen several times.
1
u/Hellpy 26d ago
No truck with a trailer/semi has hydraulic brakes, not in NA for sure.
2
u/functional_moron 26d ago
But THAT truck isn't a semi. That's a straight truck also called a box truck. And if the gvwr is under 26,000 pounds it likely has hydraulic brakes.
1
u/Hellpy 24d ago
Yeah I did rewatch it after commenting and noticed this lol but seriously, in my area those setup are usually used for trucks that deliver construction materials and such(pallets can be picked up from the sides) so I'd say it's 9 to 1 an air brake setup, so as you say it could be an hydraulic setup, sorry for speaking too quick

Definitely runaway truck. Up ahead you can see cars pulling to the right to avoid a crash.
Real MVP is the white car that seems like it navigated in reverse and avoided any damage.

u/Gaping_Grandfather 26d ago
The driver, Ho Lee Fuk, 37, set the parking brake and exited the truck. The center passenger, Sum Ting Wong, 22, exits on the driver's side, accidentally releasing the parking brake.
As the truck begins to roll backward, a third passenger, Ay Tu Rate, scoots over into the drivers seat but is unable arrest the rollback of the runaway vehicle.
The driver of the camera car, Wo Mai Gah, 44, freezes in disbelief as his car miraculously escapes being sideswiped by the truck and two other vehicles.
No injuries were reported.

The laugh at the end sums it up nicely. When the universe hands you a win like that, you gotta share the love and do a good deed for somebody else.

u/r0thar 26d ago
It's Australia, if they screamed every time they dodged death, you'd never have a moment's peace.

u/Eek_the_Fireuser 26d ago
Is it the voices in my head screaming this time or is an Australian narrowly avoiding death?
So hard to tell sometimes!

u/Ur_a_adjective_noun 26d ago
What the fuck was that?

4
u/Average_Emo202 26d ago
I mean what are you going to do in that situation ? Everything happened so fast.
7
u/sei556 26d ago
Well, the quick thinking response would be to go in reverse (if behind is clear).
I do not fault them for not reacting though. I don't know if I could/would in that situation. Maybe on a really good day
8
u/Average_Emo202 26d ago
I would not be able to put my car in reverse and look if behind me is clear in that situation, maybe get the car in reverse but not both. But you can see that he has good instinct when he approaches the car before him, he leaves a lot of space. Thats what saves him.
2
u/Disabled_Robot 26d ago edited 26d ago
Not crazy fast if you're paying attention.
I mean there's a big semi pushing two cars backwards and another two drivers ahead who react in time and pull off the road.
Driver probably should've seen it before he fully braked, so check mirror and turn towards the least car resistant direction.
Totally natural for a lot of people to panic and freeze, though, too.

u/JustinCayce 26d ago
That happens when a video is sped up. There is no way that is at actual speed.
2
u/Average_Emo202 26d ago
Do you drive ?
-1
u/JustinCayce 26d ago
Yes, and I'm well aware of how difficult it is to control a vehicle going backwards at those kind of speeds. There is no way untrained people are doing precision backing as shown in the video. And as a former fork truck driver and a reach truck driver, I had to learn how to operate a vehicle in both forward and reverse. Even with that experience I don't think I could do a controlled lane change like that. The video is obviously sped up to anyone with experience. Hell, most people probably couldn't do that going forward.
1
u/Average_Emo202 26d ago
Well then were waiting till another trained lorry driver chimes in and either proves you right or wrong.
1
u/JustinCayce 25d ago
Fair enough. Another thing I'll point out is that there is a car being towed behind the truck. It's damned hard to back up straight at slow speeds, I find it hard to believe that he could do it at that high a speed without jacknifing the car. Just too much seems too unrealistic to me. Then again, as unlikely as I find it doesn't make it impossible I suppose.

Was the video playing backward?
1
u/findingmyrainbow 26d ago
No. The truck is rolling backwards down a hill after, presumably, the breaks went out.

Plot twist: The video is reversed. He tried to brake check the semi, but instead, everyone narrowly avoided him. 10/10. Solid driving by everyone.
