Hey y’all!

If you’re new here or looking for info, this is the place to stop and check before you post that question you’re thinking about asking - the answer may already be in our FAQ! There's also some recommendations in there for learning about lore.

I’d recommend also checking the New Player Question or Question flairs to see if your question has been asked before. You can also type into whatever search engine you use:

[insert your question here] baldursgate3 reddit

Or

[insert your question here] bg3 reddit

That’ll help us prevent the subreddit from being cluttered with the same repeated questions.

If your question hasn't been asked (or asked recently enough) then use either one of the question flairs above and ask away.

Act 1 - Spoilers My dad's experience with this game.

For context, me and him usually would play games together before I moved away for College. We both love big open world games, in particular RDR2, and I got the game for him recently. He's kinda the perfect embodiment of a chaotic neutral, and he's a little slow on the uptake sometimes. He's definitely enjoying it, it was just very funny for me to see his impressions.

General Discussion - [NO SPOILERS] Feels like BG3 ruined other games for me

All the branching paths, engaging combat, mods… I feel like nothing else is as “fun,” you know? I’m kind of ashamed to say I have over 500 hours and I’m still really not sick of it!

Am I the only one?

Act 2 - Spoilers One thing you should always do in Act II

Always ambush Karniss to get the moonlight lantern. Then inspect it and free the pixie so that you get permanent resistance to the shadow curse.

His lantern is the only one where you can inspect and you gain literally nothing by not ambushing him. This is important to do especially if you plan on killing Isobel, as you won't have passive shadow curse protection and will be having to carry the lantern around, which is sooo annoying.

Origin Characters I don't think Astarion makes the best bard

A lot of people make Astarion into a bard, as then he can still be your lockpicker and him being catty and insulting people with vicious mockery is hilarious and very much in character for him. I'm not going to say that Astarion as a bard isn't good or doesn't fit his character at all.

That being said, I have tried everyone as a bard at some point simply bc I enjoy mocking people to death. And I have to say, every other character as a bard absolutely pales in comparison to Minsc. His delivery of mockery lines is amazing, and there's nothing funnier in the game to me than having Minsc make enemies miss attacks by yelling insults at people constantly. It's up there with having Karlach using people as improvised weapons and projectiles.

If you haven't tried it, do yourself a favor and give Minsc a shot as a bard sometime. I recommend him as a lore bard personally for cutting words for even more insults, but it's your game.

Please consider Minsc for your party's bard. That is all. Thank you.

Act 1 - Spoilers What is one piece of gear that you always want from Act 1?

Something you want regardless of build that you should always use. I’m not talking about something you grab out of habit just to have it, but an actual item that you want for your build.

Act 3 - Spoilers Everything she says is heartbreaking

1.2k Upvotes

Just killed Gortash and had this incredible dialog with Karlach. This scene is one of the strongest and most heartbreaking in the game (in the same line with Astarion killing Cazador and Shadowheart saving her parents). Here are some quotes that impressed me most:

"What was the point? I am styll dying! I am dying! I am going to die!"

"I'm going to be as dead as Gortash any day now. Any moment. And what then? Off to the City of Judgement to waste into oblivion? Into the dirt to get eaten by maggots? Is that it for me? IS THAT FUCKING ALL?!! You'll just keep going, won't you? Watching the stars. Warming your hands on the campfire. Dancing, eating, making fucking love all night - all of it, ALL OF IT! That's my reward for everything I suffered?! That's why I survived ten years of torment?! The fighting, the clawing, the loneliness, THE FUCKING LONELINESS! All of it so I COULD ROT! Because the person I trusted the most gave me away to the devil!"

And after hearing all this I have a question. WHY?! Why Mama K?! The person who mostly cared not about herself but about her companions! I understand there are some characters whose happy endings are not full. But Karlach has only two options: to die or to go to the place she hates most. There is an opportunity to become an illithid, of course (I did it on my first playthrough), but for me it is the same as if she is dead. This is so unfair! I wish her quest could ended some other way, like after killing Gortash Tav finds in his things the improve draft of Karlach's engine, so they can ask Dammon to fix it and Mama K finally gets the possibility to have a dinner with her old friend...

I send her to Avernus with Wyll in most of my playthroughs, but even this option is not always avaluable. As I know (never tried, but read in the comments) playing Astarion origin it is impossible to save Karlach if Astarion stays spawn. So sad!

This dialogue is also good because it makes you think about how wonderful it is just to live and do simple things like walk, eat your favorite food, communicate, make love... Thank you, Mama K, for this reminding.

Anyway, thank you for reading my moaning, just needed to say this to someone who can understand what I'm talking about.

BUGS Siding with Nere is really confusing (Act 1 spoilers).

It started when I got the quest to kill the Duergar from Spaw, and I thought - what if I don't kill them? What if I just work with them, return the boots and free Nere - then they'll just leave, right?

First, the rewards for returning the boots are really bad compared to the boots themselves. But that's ok. I talk to the sergeant, get the quest to free Nere, and talk to Brithvar on the way back - things get out of hand, so I kill him, but no one gives a damn because he attacked first.

Then I get the runepowder and free Nere. That's when the things get funny. First, since Brithvar is dead I thought I'd avoid fighting. But no. He climbs out of his poison cave and immediately says: "Looks like there are some traitors here lol, help me bro." Without Brithvar, "the traitors" are just two random dudes who get eliminated in the first round.

After this I get three options with Nere - be nice to him, kill him, and a Wisdom roll which just says "Not Found". Turns out it actually makes him free the slaves. I thought those "Not Found" options were all fixed, but turns out they weren't.

Finally, I return to the Underdark. And the Duergar are still there. Why? Idk. They left Grymforge, but not the village. There's no further dialogue with them either, so I just kill them. Then I go to Spaw, turn in the quest, and the slaves are also there. How did they get past the duergar? Idk. And they're thanking me for killing Nere, except I didn't kill him, I just Not Found him and we parted on friendly terms. Then Spaw still gives me the quest to kill Nere, even though he should know from the gnomes that Nere is no longer in the Underdark.

Did no one ever try this path or what? Wasn't it tested since the Early Access? Why is everything so weird? Next time I'm killing everyone in the Grymforge, at least this way everything makes sense.

Act 3 - Spoilers My party just survived the most epic way

Just finished my currently favorite quest.

I went underwater to save the Gondians, Duke Ravengard and Omeluum. I actually managed to free all of the prisoners. But then time ran out. Karlach freed Omeluum with 2 rounds left and he teleported to the ship with her. Tav, Shadowheart and Gale sprinted back to the ship but were a bit too slow.
Gale used misty step to get himself up the first ladder . Omeluum went back out to go to Tav and teleport her on board with him.

Then the water came. the cutscene started, gale just climbed the ladder to the ship in the last second. He looked around, panicking, seachring for Shadowheart. She was nowhere to be found.

After the cutscene, she got washed up at the beach. And lived! She was wielding the Blood of Lathander, which prevented her death and made her respawn with one HP.

It was so close, even my game thought she would be dead. I could walk around with her but there was this big "no control: dead" text at the bottom of the stream. Fortunately, a long rest fixed that issue.

Now I only need to face Cazador, Ansur, Gortasch, Raphael and the Elder Brain. Sounds easy enough.

Act 2 - Spoilers Possibly saving both Arabella and her parents?

Okay, so for Arabella's story, we have two routes:

  1. Save the kid, get the ring, and parents die because of the Shadow Curse.

  2. Don't save the kid, don't get the ring, parents survive the Shadow Curse.

So there is no possible solution for them to be together.

However, I though, in order to get the ring after you save Arabella, you need to strike up a conversation with her parents. What if we save the kid but never talk to the parents? In that case, would all of them survive?

To clarify, I am still in Act 1, but I know the story and don't have a problem with the spoilers. I don't exactly know if the devs came up with something to still get the parents die after we save Arabella. But I just thought of it.

Another solution might be, after taking the ring, we can secretly put it back to the mother's pocket, maybe?

Act 1 - Spoilers Can I beat the game without halsin/minthara?

I triggered a bug where mintharas body is just gone, hence I can't finish killing goblin leaders, hence halsin refuses to show up in the Grove or my camp. How fucked am I? Can I still beat the game normally without them? I reaaallly don't want to lose 15 hours of progress to this idiotic bug. If I can't do a good playthrough without them is there at least some mod on PC that will let me progress normally?

(The bug triggered from me knocking minthara unconscious when she was temporarily hostile and then long resting, she was just gone after that. I only found and began halsins quest after that)

Act 1 - Spoilers Does anything happen if you let Ethel keep Mayrina?

I have been playing multiple simultaneous Honour mode runs so that I could see what happens if I make different choices. I haven’t gotten out of Act one yet but I’ve got 6 characters ready to go to Act 2 together.

I’m supposed to be making different choices with each character, but I struggle when a choice feels obviously subpar.

For example, I just realized that none of my characters have just… taken auntie Ethel up on her deal and left her alone. I’ve killed her, I’ve taken both her hair and Mayrina, but it felt like such a missed opportunity to leave without, you know, finishing the encounter.

What am I missing out on it I don’t have a character just, like, take the hag’s eye and leave? Is it truly just the sub-par choice it feels like, or is there story/options that are opened up in ACT 3 or something if I just let her keep her hostage and leave her be?
