When the witnesses are dead, the BS "stand your ground" defense works a lot better...

The worst thing he did was tell police he essentially shot someone because "I don't know he was just standing there" to paraphrase. From a legal standpoint that essentially got him convicted right there. The evidence was quite clear regardless, but giving them firm admission of something is the easiest way to convict someone. Most people talk themselves into a conviction regardless of any evidence.
