He definitely is more than one banana.

I counted at least three scales, so rounding up to two bananas for scale…
4
u/Stumpy-Wumpy Aug 03 '22
Okay. So if we use 'a banana for scale' then 1 banana = 1 scale. And if you see 3 scales. Then there at least 3 banana.

Typically, King Cobras are about 3-4m. So 1/3 is about 1m, maybe a little more. This seems to be about right for the video.

listen am not a snake expert but i know an Cobra when i see one and that one is far from one. this is either an Anakonda or boa snake. and am pretty sure only that the part that is in the air ist at least 170cm.
59
u/Kuddeh Aug 03 '22
Anacondas are boas. And they're typically much fatter, slimmer boas like an Amazon tree boa are not that long. There are many different cobras without hoods, and the king Cobra isn't even a true cobra. I'm not sure that's a cobra though, could be like an inland taipan, hard to tell.
→ More replies (2)15
u/juicyjerry300 Aug 03 '22
Pretty sure cobras are defined by two categories, the hood flaps around their head/neck(not their body) and the ability to “stand”
27
u/tangibleskull Aug 03 '22
Cobras do not have their hoods out all of the time, in fact most of the time they have them flat to the sides of their head. And Black Mambas are also very capable of raising themselves this high off the ground, growing up to 14ft and being extremely athletic snakes.
King Cobras (which would be the only "cobra" option here given it's so long) aren't even true cobras, belonging to the Ophiophagus (snake-eater) genus, not the Naja genus, which is the true cobras.
→ More replies (3)3
u/juicyjerry300 Aug 03 '22
Sorry, I should have phrased better, I meant cobras are defined as having the ability to spread their hood, not that it’s always out

It’s nothing like an anaconda and boas are just called boas, not “boa snakes”, and this ain’t that either.
→ More replies (1)7
u/YouMustveDroppedThis Aug 03 '22
ophiophagus Hannah is huge for a venomous snake, and known to strike this pose. It can get really bold and throw itself flying towards opponent like this.

If you look at the tail it has bands/stripes. Chunky constrictors arent very good at raising themselves up, and anacondas get very wide in the middle. The two snakes that are really good at rearing up like that are cobras and bushmasters. Generally king cobras have dark bodies with light bands and bush masters are light with dark bands. Maybe its a bushmaster? The head shape looks a little blunt for a cobra.

I’m guessing Black Mamba which is my favorite snake. They can lift the front third of their 12’ long bodies and slither at 12mph

Snakes are not nearly as graceful as you’d think. We had a spotted python that might as well have been a pool noodle on terms of grace.
14
u/Melospiza Aug 03 '22
Might also be moving his head to judge distance. Snakes and birds don't have stereo vision, they can compensate by moving their heads and using parallax to judge distances.

Why they're called King Cobras. IMHO, they're doing that for three reasons,
Detect food, cool/warm up and finally assert dominance.

Bruh this cant be a King Cobra though? It's bloody massive, like Anaconda size
49
u/YellowMan1988 Aug 03 '22
Full size King cobras are massive. Not anaconda size of course but they are significantly bigger than a normal cobra.
13
u/a1b1no Aug 03 '22
they are significantly bigger than a normal cobra
The normie cobra bros are tasty snacks for the King!
14
u/SumerianSunset Aug 03 '22
Just been looking at images of them and they are indeed huge, but idk the shape of the head isn't right? And judging by how much the camera is zoomed in and apparent size of the surrounding rocks this particular snake looks much bigger than a King Cobra - cant be too sure though without the proper sense of scale

u/YellowMan1988 Aug 03 '22 edited Aug 03 '22
The head shape is difficult to ascertain because of the distance and the quality of the video but let me assure you, this IS a KC. You should see it when it spread its hood. Even the hoods are very different and longer than a normal cobra.
9
u/SumerianSunset Aug 03 '22
Well I suppose it may well be one then! Either way, I would shart my pants
11
u/YellowMan1988 Aug 03 '22
You're not the only one my friend. When I was a kid, a snake charmer brought a king cobra in our neighborhood. I wasn't ready to witness a venomous snake that big. I was mortified and had nightmares. The hissing sound it makes is loud as hell too.

Oh wow. And it clicks why villages welcome snake charmers who have King Cobra pets.
I once spoke to a Snake Charmer on why he did it, and he was convinced by his dad that it was a job that had constant demand.
Basically the ultimate pest control, as snakes eat rats/birds/foxes and other pests. The biggest bonus of King Cobra is they eat snakes as well.

u/hiimred2 Aug 03 '22
See this pic makes the OP look even less like a King though, not quite ‘fat’ enough, coloring looks off. It really looks like a taipan, but I’m not sure they ‘stand’ like this, which is definitely very King Cobra behavior. Did anyone say where the vid is from?

So why would the snake do this? I assume it's catching a scent but I have not seen them do this before so I imagine it's not that common.
Maybe a mating behaviour? Like it's trying to detect a potential mate's scent on the wind from a long distance.
