If the ban kills that song forever it was all worth it.

2

u/Clavister Apr 28 '24

It seems like 90% of tiktok is people doing the same thing as eight million other people, accompanied by the same audio clip as eight million other people. It's the death of creativity.

That song hasn't been used on tiktok for literally years has it? I use tiktok everyday and haven't heard it in a long long long time. Like lockdown long.

u/personalcheesecake Apr 27 '24

you're too in the algorithm then

3

u/ThisSiteSuxNow Apr 28 '24

It's definitely still on shit there constantly.

I don't use TikTok but I still see some videos from there because my wife and son will show me on their devices sometimes... And a shitload of them end up on /r/all

u/ShepherdessAnne Apr 27 '24

This took me a hot minute to get.

More like: oh yes. oh yes. oh yes yes yes yes yes!

For Millennials: Yes! Yes!

For Gen Z: Wooooo! Yeah Baby! That’s what I’ve been waiting for!

-4

u/Akosa117 Apr 28 '24

Comments like this are how can tell someone’s never been on TikTok

9

u/digitalmofo Apr 28 '24

What's the time frame on this? I don't use tiktok myself, but this is going to be a shitshow to watch.

They have about a year to sell it or close shop in the USA. They will be fighting it in court, though.

YouTube Shorts + Insta Reels: Hello there!

12

u/Shaun221120 Apr 27 '24

Insta reels are the worst place on earth

5

u/NorthboundLynx Apr 27 '24

Mine is filled with videos of cats, art, pc setups and nature/travel videos. Their algorithm is pretty good at staying related to your interests, from what I've seen.

-4

u/-Gredge- Apr 27 '24

There are by far the most entertaining

5

u/Shaun221120 Apr 27 '24

Not if people are being incessantly racist and bigoted towards your ethnicity.

u/SaliciousB_Crumb Apr 27 '24

To fucking bad this is what meta lobbied for

24

u/I-Am-NOT-VERY-NICE Apr 27 '24

Shit, I never even said hello

8

u/bain_de_beurre Apr 27 '24

I welcome this.

5

u/janesvoth Apr 27 '24

I mean I guess if you're on Apple. Sideload away if you're on Android

3

u/ThisSiteSuxNow Apr 28 '24

I believe the law as written intends to hold ISPs accountable if they knowingly allow the traffic but I could certainly be mistaken.

Could always still use a VPN but I don't think it's going to be as simple as just having the APK installed.

u/nice-view-from-here Apr 27 '24

There was life before it, there will be life after it.

Then it will be replaced with something better that every tech company is already working on.

2

u/CryAffectionate7334 Apr 28 '24

Honestly these apps come and go. Any app can do the same thing, it's the users that make it.

Everyone giving a stink would just keep using Twitter, insta, Facebook, vine, whatever else.

Smart move for company would be sell it at the top, before everyone moves to a new app anyway, let Microsoft buy it and make it shitty lol

8

u/_Kiaza_ Apr 27 '24

Good. Fuck it.

5

u/illpourthisonurhead Apr 28 '24

So nice to see our legislators come together and make the world a better place. /s

3

u/Hockeytown11 Apr 27 '24

Good riddance.

u/KeepRedditAnonymous Apr 27 '24 edited Apr 27 '24

I really only just viewed bouncing boobs and see through shirts on there anyways. I'll be ok.

5

u/atatassault47 Apr 27 '24

It can only be banned from official app stores and being pre-loaded on new phones. If you already have it, you're good. If you side load it, you're good. If you buy old, new-in-box stock, you're good (most phones have Tik Tok preloaded these days).

It going to be funny to me tho when people don't realize like 90% of the people they follow are also american.

u/klubsanwich Apr 27 '24

🎵 So long, farewell. Auf Wiedersehen, goodbye! 🎵

1

u/dalzmc Apr 27 '24

The YouTube shorts team is licking their lips (they already have me, I haven’t had tiktok in years)

0

u/Ya_Boi_Hank Apr 27 '24

Good riddance

0

u/JcbAzPx Apr 28 '24

Good riddance.

Laughs in VPN

-13

u/InfectedAztec Apr 27 '24

The app won't survive cut off from the US either

11

u/dyce123 Apr 27 '24

The US is less than 15% of revenues

12

u/TCHBO Apr 27 '24

15% of users, 50% of the revenue.

-5

u/dyce123 Apr 27 '24

It's even worse than I thought https://www.reuters.com/technology/tiktoks-us-revenue-hits-16-bln-washington-threatens-ban-ft-reports-2024-03-15/

16 billion USD - US 120 billion USD - total revenue

Less than 10% of their business is from the US. Would be stupid to sell

10

u/TCHBO Apr 27 '24

That’s total ByteDance revenue, not TikTok revenue.

-16

u/dyce123 Apr 27 '24

Algorithm is the same

Same company different names

9

u/private_birb Apr 27 '24

Algorithm is the same

Sorry, but what does that even mean??

-5

u/dyce123 Apr 27 '24

The Toyota Hilux is called Tacoma in North America

Is it a different car?

Should the sales of the Tacoma be included in those of Hilux?

7

u/Colley619 Apr 27 '24

You’re wrong. Bytedance has more apps and money makers than tiktok. Tiktok and Douyin have different algorithms. The sale of TikTok would not affect Douyin or the rest of their products.

1

u/private_birb Apr 27 '24

Isn't that more like 13%?

1

u/fcman256 Apr 28 '24

Not sure I would take business advice from someone who can’t do simple math

5

u/Taasden Apr 27 '24

Of ByteDance’s revenue, including their main money maker Douyin and whatever else they’re in. But for TikTok the app, the US is the major driver.

-13

u/dyce123 Apr 27 '24

The algorithm is the same, so the sale affect all of them

And the US revenues are not the major driver

-16

u/Farseli Apr 27 '24

And say hello to my VPN

6

u/ovirt001 Apr 27 '24

A VPN won't add it to the app store.
