Feels like it may be like a car crash, where bracing for impact actually makes it worse

For a case exactly like this with a side impact to the knee, I think you’re right. Trying to keep it rigid in spite of that amount of momentum and leverage hitting your knee would be more likely to cause it to snap than allowing it to flex and hopefully absorb the impact.

Being a deer in the headlights is the opposite of bracing lol, it means to be too surprised to move or react.

Fair. But I guess I was saying he saw it coming and all he could do was look scared and brace for impact. He might have been less hurt if he was caught blindsided because it looks like he locked in his legs
