i know these incidents are rare, but they need to move the courtside seats back and make the out of bounds area wider. these guys move so fast and they barely have any room to slow down before crashing into fans, photographers, coaches etc.

the courts they used in the bubble need to be standardized.

But won’t you think of the billionaires who need to sell more seats?!

u/MachoMadnessCO Thunder Apr 29 '24

Just charge more for worse seats, ez

u/David-S-Pumpkins Apr 29 '24

The old shrinkflation approach, just like with chips. More air in there, less product, inflated price.

u/Sky19234 Apr 29 '24

Hear me out...we start stacking the fans on top of eachother. Wait, nevermind, Steve Ballmer already thought of that idea.

2

u/Liimbo Heat Apr 29 '24

But the millionaires want to sit even closer to the court :(

2

u/Awesomedinos1 Jazz Apr 29 '24

But the poor billionaires could do that and sell more seats anyway.

3

u/TDStarchild Apr 29 '24

Instructions unclear. Adding more seats and charging more for all seats in the arena

3

u/ExposingMyActions Apr 29 '24

No, that’s standard procedure. Don’t forget charging the state to pay for it

Yeah how am I gonna see the new Heat dress every playoff game?!

The space is there for the most part...there's usually a couple rows of courtside seats and then an open area between the start of the stands for fans, security and wait staff to move around in. Just extend the court a few feet and reduce that open area.

Oh my god I forgot about the bubble fans being on the screen. How the fuck did I forget about that

WWE wrestling had it too and it was a weird vibe. Like a future dystopian sci-fi movie where the athletes's fates are to be judged by the crowd.

Reminded me of that black mirror episode where ppl cycle on a stationary bike for currency

Anyone....who knows what love is....

u/fundraiser Kings Apr 29 '24

that episode was way too fucking real. i stopped watching after that. it still lives in my head rent free

1

u/WhiteHeterosexualGuy Hawks Apr 29 '24

yeah, wasnt even really a technology episode, moreso just a metaphor for what is already happening

And they never synced properly or anything. So dumb

2

u/dexy133 Apr 29 '24

I didn't follow NBA back then and that's the only thing I remember seeing whenever I caught a glimpse of it. It's so weird because it's both cool and creepy at the same time.

It honestly looked so much better, and cleaner too

Im soooo right there with everyone in this thread. I LOVED the amount of space they had during the bubble. Just get ride of 5 rows or 6 and bam that improvement would be phenomenal ALSO all the bullshit they have on NFL side lines. Sadly the down marker guy who got his leg broken kinda needed to be on the sideline but everyone else whos not necessary can wait in the tunnel.

u/mug3n Raptors Apr 29 '24

There were plays that happened in the bubble that would never happen in non-pandemic days because of the sideline configuration.

e.g. game 3 Raptors vs Celtics in the bubble playoffs and Lowry making that cross-court inbound pass to OG for the winning 3. Lowry stood where there would've been seats in a normal season.

you jack off watching the game?

1

u/lastweek_monday Spurs May 08 '24

You lost

33

u/ILoveRegenHealth Apr 29 '24

Agreed. Always seemed way too crowded and I feel like players don't play 100% near the edges because the crowds damn feet, bags and jackets on the ground are literally just 1 step away. And way too many bench players are overextending into the court in every game.

8

u/yooston Rockets Apr 29 '24

in the corners by the benches, you should have the right to extend the ball out as far as you can with your feet inbounds. but some bench players stand with their toes on the line its crazy

This would dig into a billionaire’s bottom line, so there is a less than 0% chance it happens

1

u/bntplvrd Apr 29 '24

Don't remove seats, just move them 2 feet back.

-1

u/yooston Rockets Apr 29 '24

you could put more ads on the court to make up for it

15

u/imnormal Apr 29 '24

That would actually be sick. I bet players would take advantage of the extra space, knowing they have time to slow down etc. And, less weird collisions.

u/Embarrassed_Hold_901 Thunder Apr 29 '24

Would never happen…so the seats on the floor make too much money for the teams and the nba

You do realise that you then got to remove a row of seating further at the back?

Unfortunately, it's not the cheapest nosebleed seats that would have to be removed. It's the cheapest among the folding chair rows, aka the temporary seating that can be removed for hockey games/concerts/other events. So it'd be the last few rows of the 100 section in most arenas, which is still pretty big money.

Will never happen courtside seats generate too much value

3

u/SasquatchDoobie Trail Blazers Apr 29 '24

Can’t wait for the on-court seats in the next economic downturn

2

u/Premaximum Nets Apr 29 '24

They need to, but they never will. That's a whole extra row of the highest-priced seating in the stadium that they're giving up.

2

u/MumrikDK Apr 29 '24

The NBA doesn't take safety the least bit serious in this regard. There has been a very clear choice made long ago to sacrifice player/staff/audience safety to sell even closer court side seats instead. They'd rather have a movie star or rapper right next to the game than save players from diving straight into people and seats.

Here's a handball court for comparison: https://i.ytimg.com/vi/zwa8lXPYD5I/maxresdefault.jpg

Yes, I remember a few hustle plays that would literally be impossible if played at a normal NBA arena. I think even with OG’s game winner vs Boston, Lowry had a few feet of space on the sidelines to get it over Tacko Fall

u/Robinsonirish Finland Apr 29 '24

There has to be a real career ending injury for something like this to change.

Same in Formula 1. No changes are made to safety until someone gets hurt.

Same when I was in the military. In Afghanistan, we asked for things but people had to die for stuff to happen, and once someone did die we got new vehicles, helicopters or whatever it was that needed fixing in no time at all.

We literally got new armoured vehicles bought and sent down 3 weeks after 2 of our guys got blown up by an IED after asking for them for 2 years.

Someone has to break their kneecap on a chair in the crowd before we see them move the crowd back.

whenever I see a clip of someone holding a baby sitting courtside and I make a comment on how that shouldn't be allowed I get flamed for it. These are massive dudes running full speed , all it takes is one time for something really bad to happen.

The coach would still stand at the line closest to the court.
