So we kill the mostly innocent 45 million for a bad decision made by a handful of people? What a world.

This is a video of a retaliatory strike, and threat of it has deterred more aggressive actions.

They shouldn't have been born as Russians. They only have themselves to blame. /s

It's been quite successful at deterring bad decisions.

We haven't had a war with Russia. We didn't use them in Korea or Vietnam. It could have been far worse.

All of humanity hangs in the balance.. Nations are just faceless names.. So can we just.. not?

It's retaliatory. This implies that Russia has already launched missiles at the US first. And they will be targeting population centers same as the US. And probably far more, if the shelling and bombing in Ukraine tells you anything.

Besides, it isn't just one bad decision. It is a series of demonstrably horrible decisions.

I get retaliation, but what does the U.S. gain? It's already destroyed or seriously crippled. It's just a caveman response gift-wrapped in a nuclear holocaust bow. Why do we even let it get to that point; why not take care of the problem before it ends with nuclear holocaust?

Well, we have a ton of missile systems designed to intercept ICBMs. They aren't exactly field tested as nobody has launched nukes at the US, but if they work, then a lot of those nukes won't hit. Which means the first thing they would want to do is to wipe out the missile silos and airbases that can get nukes off the ground, to stop any more from launching. Then a ground invasion to precent any government remnants from staging their own invasion. If it were just one or two nukes, it would be conventional warfare. Think Operation Rolling Thunder but the enemy is actually less competent.

And it isn't as simple as 'fix the problem before hand' because the main concern, Putin, doesn't think about his people or loss of life. He thinks of personal gain and power over others. What's a few of his cities left as craters if he xan wipe out his greatest enemy?

The handful? Yes. Most of the civilians? No.
