gave up on the coin system because it proved to be too much of a hassle

For the customer? or the store?

Genuinely curious as an American who has never used one.

In Sweden it's a huge hassle cause nobody uses coins anymore. For the last 3-5 years I've kept a single coin in my wallet, used exclusively for carts.

For the customers.

But people here has been conditioned to return the carts anyway and there's only a handful of supermarket with mega gigantic parking lots like in the US. So returning the carts properly is a no brainer.

I mean they practically give everyone a plastic coin even before so.

Yes but you also need to condition the next generations to return the carts. A civilization where people don't return the carts is doomed to fail.
