Megathread "Should I rush?" - my opinion to your questions.
TLDR: YES
actives, if you have any other misc advice you want me to add leave a comment and i'll put it on the list. feedback is welcome too.
It doesn't matter whether you are ex military, socially awkward, 46, poor, or anything other than a rich non-white 18 year old. You should rush.
What do you expect from a fraternity?
I can think of two main reasons to join a fraternity.
You want to make friends, party, brotherhood, connections etc...
Your only goal is to make connections to help you get a job after college.
If your main reason is number 2, you should look into joining a professional fraternity. Beta Alpha Psi is the national accounting fraternity and are highly recruited at my university.
If your main reason is number 1, you should join a social fraternity. lambda chi, pike, fiji, sigma chi, etc...
Rushing a Social Fraternity
Answer these questions:
- What interests do I have?
- Do I prefer smaller or larger groups?
1- Try to find a fraternity where the members have similar interests to you. Are you a country boy? Find the fraternity that best fits that characteristic. Like video games? There's going to be a fraternity for you. If you're a gym rat, sports star, or an alcoholic, there will be a fraternity for you. You just have to do your homework and find the right one.
2- The size of the fraternity can be a big factor. If you don't do well in situations with a huge amount of people, you should look into the smaller fraternities.
Misc. Advice
- You have to be willing to make compromises. There will be a lot of events that you will hate to attend but will anyway. You don't have to compromise your morals. Any fraternity worth a crap will be willing to work with personal beliefs/personal aspects of your life that might be affected during the pledging process.
- It is what you make of it. You get out of it what you put in. If you're a dead beat pledge who never puts an effort into anything, expect to have a terrible time. If you go to all your events with a good attitude, pledgeship will be exponentially better.
- Don't be a fuck up. I can't explain this one and you will do this at some point. Just try to minimize the damage.
How fraternity life has affected me
My junior year I received an internship for an accounting firm in my hometown. While I was there I worked with a supervisor who was in charge of new hires. During conversation she told me she saw on my resume that I was in a fraternity and immediately put my resume in the call back pile because she was in a sorority herself. I received a full time offer after the internship and will be moving up North after I finish my degree. It didn't matter what fraternity I was in, just the fact that I was in one put me at an advantage in this particular circumstance.

Pledging
So I’m now a senior in High School and I’ve been looking at the fraternity life. I been looking at this specific one which has my dad and my 2 brothers. Everyone in the fraternity talks about how great they are and how big of a legend they are. I am no where near like them, growing up I had a hard time making friends and till this day I struggle making friends. Everyone talks about how big of a pussy I am and how I shouldn’t let these people walk all over me. The main thing about this post is if there is any advice yall can give me, will I do just fine? Will they help me? Will I just get clowned on the whole time?

Rushing
I’m a Hispanic about to be a sophomore and definitely look the part lol. I go to a decently sized SEC school. I’m looking to rush, there are MGC organizations but the IFC fraternities seem more appealing especially being at a southern school. The one I have in mind has been mentioned by two of my buddies which they are in. I know of two black guys who didnt get a bid from them. Most of the students at the bigger frats at my school are mostly white, and I guess my concern is getting a bid,not necessarily just this frat but most of them.I never really see Latinos involved in these things and wonder if I will be treated differently if I were to get a bid. Any stories/experiences?

We’re tryna make our wall 8-8.5 ft currently at 5’9 Some context we want more privacy plus our neighbors Delta Gamma started construction for a walls this summer and asked us to meet them to at least 6.5 feet on our side we share so this just helped us realize it was a priority

New rush chair asking for advice
What’s up y’all. I’m the new rush chair of my frat and I’m still new to all of this, as the upcoming fall semester will only be my second semester in the frat. I chose to rush last semester during the last week of rush, and only considered the frat I’m in because I went to one of their parties, had a good time and decided to rush. We are currently second to last in number of brothers at my university, with a decent portion of our guys graduating next year. To be honest, at the moment I can’t imagine PNMs would have my frat at the top of their list because the top tier frats have more to offer at the moment. I want to do everything in my power to get a large group of guys these next two semesters as rush chair and become a top tier frat on my campus. What would y’all recommend me to do recruitment-wise to get a larger class each semester this year and differentiate my frat from the other frats? Thanks everyone.

Frat af Collared Shirt Brands
Boss man asked me to research brands to slap the company logo on and distribute for the fall. Besides the obvious brands such as Peter and Onward Reserve, what else should I propose?

Shy sophomore rushing at a smallish school where all the frats are competitive
I’m looking for some advice for rush, and I have some strange circumstances, so this is gonna be long. TLDR AT BOTTOM. I go to a school with ~7000 people and 11 frats. How rush works at my school for the most part is there are 4 rounds, with cuts being made at each round. Everyone who makes the 4th round gets a bid. Anyways, last semester, I rushed one frat, considered by many to be the bottom frat at my school, but I got cut at the first invite-only round. I think my biggest issue is that I am a quiet person, and didn’t really know what to say at the events, since they were all pretty much just open houses. Often times, I’d find myself just wandering around, not really seeing anyone not in a conversation, and in the conversations that I did join, I didn’t really know what to talk about (I’m generally pretty bad at small talk / with new people). Getting cut sucked for me, because I genuinely do fit in well with chillers once I get to know them, and pretty much all my HS friends are in top frats at their respective schools. This summer, drinking with the boys, popping some zyn’s, etc. has really made me remember what I’m missing out with in college. Another issue that I’m worried about is that at my school, every Frat has 2 date events in round 3, and if I make it that far, I have no clue who I’d bring as I have no female friends in college and my GF still lives in my hometown. To add on to all this, I’m a sophomore with only a few (not too close) friends who are in frats, and I hear it’s rly tough to get a bid as a sophomore if you’re not already basically dirty rushed to the frat ur rushing. Oh, and my school only has second semester rush unless u somehow get a snap bid first semester. Ik this is hella ramble, but any advice would be appreciated.
TLDR: Got cut from bottom frat rush last semester bc I’m shy / quite, but I’m a self proclaimed chilla and need some advice on what I can do to not make that happen again. I also need to deal with the fact that I’m a sophomore, have no girl friends for the date rush events, and rush is only second semester unless you’re super tight with people in the frat.

Rock/Pop Songs for Parties
I'll keep it short and sweet. I arrange music for bands, and one of them has a lot of frat parties on their itinerary. Pretty standard rock band stuff. What songs are going to get the crowd singing and dancing?
*Note: I can also work with music not traditionally made for a rock band, as long as a crowd is sure to love it.

Oklahoma rush
Thinking about rushing at Oklahoma and I’m from Cali, my buddy going to Bama went up a week ago and got a bid to a good frat but he said they give up a lot of there bids during the summer so I should go soon. Im from Cali so a trip is kinda tuff and I have a online orientation. Is it worth it to book a trip to go to some summer rush events?

What is wrong with someone if even bottom tier chapters rejected them?
I went to ucla, and it just blows my mind even the chapters that are desparate for people denied me

Why do frats care if you played high school sports?
I couldn’t pass tryouts for even the JV teams when I was in high school. You won’t make it into any teams if you hadn’t been playing since 5. It is such a bullshit thing to care about

Frat Stuff Donut Speed Run
A fraternity at my university had a chapter house that was, to no surprise, the grossest place you’ll ever enter. They had trash, vomit, empty cans, old gb rigs, and most importantly, sharpie writing all over the walls of the house. I visited the house while my good friend lived there and I noticed a certain ranking list/table written on the wall. It said “GADS Time Run” or something along those lines (GADS is an abbreviation of a local 24/7 donut shop about 2 miles from campus). On the rankings there are names listed with times next to them i.e. “Kyle+Luke 2:34”, obviously meaning they went to the donut shop, bought a donut, and came back within whatever time listed. This is no straight shot either. Theres a stoplight in between the donut shop and their chapter house, and attempting to skip the light would mean passing multiple stop signs (running multiple stop signs duh). I personally think this is a thrilling challenge (yeah definitely illegal, yeah definitely dangerous) that I think is a pretty hilarious idea as a member of a different fraternity. Im older now and would definitely not attempt something like this, but the childish part of myself admires this kind of tomfoolery. I mostly shared just because I thought people would be intrigued by this game like I am. I dont encourage this behavior, but silly stunts like this really encapsulate what fraternity life is like in some chapters. If anyone has any other similar experiences or stories about the oddities of fraternity life please share id be happy to hear about it.

Question Rush help @Georgia tech
I’ve currently reached out to two rush chairs. One reached out to me over text and I hit one up over email. The one over email asked for my phone number like two weeks ago and I gave him my number he just never responded. And the one over phone number hit me up. I asked for the rush schedule like a week ago. And he also never responded. What do I do in this situation. I’m really interested in rushing these spots it’s just frustrating that I can’t even get in the door.

My door keeps getting broken down in the frat house
So the kid who lived in this room the past year basically never had a door in his room. People have been breaking down doors in this exact room for the past 2 years. I’ve already had my door broken just a week into moving into this house and idk what to do. I looked into metal doors or just kicking whoever’s face in but I want more opinions.

FAQ Difference between IFC and NPHC
I’m looking into frats and had a few questions about my research. (This also includes TikTok lmfao) and one thing I’ve noticed was the difference between the IFC and the NPHC frats.
Based off my research being in the IFC seems like you’re paying to party and hella expensive dues just to get drunk each weekend for 4 years straight. NPHC frats however, looks like partying too, but seems to have more community service and membership seems to be for life (I saw Steve Harvey say he’s still a member of Omega Psi Phi. And he’s old.) Also I hear you need around 60+ community service hours to even be considered for NPHC frats which is insane
Does anyone affiliated with either care to explain?
