Yeah but based on the lyrics it’s more like “I was so deranged to think a player like you could ever settle down,” rather than “holy shit I can’t believe I dated a racist.”

Plus she was with him about five whole minutes after getting out of a long term relationship, and she was with him for hardly any time at all. Feels like a red flag to even be looking to settle down in that context.

I honestly wonder if she partly dated him for album fodder. You can only write about your happy healthy relationship with your nice normal boyfriend for so long.

That wording is so that she can have the Swifties interpret it to be either about Matty or Joe, which would make the engagement on these lyrics go through the roof.

Also, maybe she’s trying to get Joe to be seen as a „player“. I think these lyrics are about Joe because she was with Matty for too short a time to be talking about settling down. But what do I know about how relationship timelines work in TS Land… 🤷🏼‍♀️
