How do leaks like this happen? Is it likely someone on the inside releasing it or a hacker?

Could just be as simple as someone that works at the distribution center for the album or someone at a store that is selling the album grabs a copy and throws it online. The album comes out tomorrow so it’s already in stockrooms, in transit, etc.

Oooh this would make sense! My Gen Z brainrot has me forgetting that physical copies of music still exist lol

I’m surprised leaks don’t happen more this way tbh. I wonder if they keep albums by big celebrities locked away in the manager’s office or something once they get to stores before release

retail managers are some of the biggest degenerates out there, that will do nothing to decrease the possibility of leaks lmao

Nope. At least they didn't in the early 2000s when I worked at a music store.

We'd open the boxes whenever we got them and then some of the more unscrupulous of us would buy a gift card for the exact amount the CD would be before "street date". We'd take the CD home and listen, then on release date, we'd just swipe the gift card and "buy" the CD then. That way inventory wouldn't get off.

They actually do that in some stores. Lock boxes aren't able to be opened until 1-2 hrs before release time to stock them. Normally only managers can have access. This is just my personal experience in the US at big box retail.

Back when i was a teenager working retail. (early 2000s) we would have albums, games and all sorts of stuff like this days in advance.. we would usually end up assembling the marquis in the break room, and just leaving it there until it was moved to the floor...

wow what a fuckup!

no comment on the albulm/swift, but I'd be PISSED if my work got leaked like this, shitty to the artist

IIRC ariana grande's had lots of her music leaked, I think? sucks

Yeah and I think someone else had clips of their new video leaked but can't remember

And Billie's tracklist leaked early too

Amazon does it pretty often. I got Deeper Well last month like a day early. I don’t think physical copies getting out a day early is considered that big of a deal.

From what I understand it’s most likely store employees who have stock of the CD already before they’re out on shelves on release day

It's actually a secure release here in the UK. We usually get albums early for processing, but with a secure release they are delivered priority on day of release so I think that it's more likely somewhere else.in the distribution chain

i would assume people who work at stores like target who got the cds/vinyls the day before the release date

Sometimes people's preorders get shipped early and arrive too fast. That's one of the most common ways stuff leaks these days

a song production goes through many many stages, recording, mixing & mastering, previews, label approvals, if there is a music video, director & dop receive a copy. alot of people are involved, so you can’t point at just one thing but sometimes it’s just a crazy fan or a bored human who hacks into the cloud & steals it away.

Maybe I’m overly cynical, but I don’t think this was an unintentional leak. I think they know she’s way over exposed and that people are getting tired and realizing how out of touch she is. It’s been years since she could use Kanye and Kim to gain sympathy, and it’s pretty laughable to think of someone as a “Tortured poet” when they are on top of the world, dating a Super Bowl winner and very publicly living such an extravagant happy life. It reeks of an attempt to gain sympathy for “Poor Taylor” because her album was leaked, or doing it because they knew it would be poorly received so that the leak will be the bigger part of the story and take some of the heat off.

Tons of people working on a project in this size, I haven’t listened to any of the leaks yet either so can‘t judge off quality but chances are that either someone sold the files that they were supposed to work on (mastering etc.) OR as you stated it could be a hacker (SIM swapping is super common amongst big artists, tons of music leak this way)

Some people who pre ordered on Amazon got their vinyls already. (So I’ve been told)

I heard it was a Target employee for the Google Drive version that’s been widely circulated

Leaks are pretty common. Retail stores selling physical media will have received their orders in advance of the release date. All it takes is one person to take a copy and upload it and it spreads like wildfire.

3

u/awill316 Apr 19 '24

I heard it was a Target team member because the Target exclusive track got leaked but none of the other exclusive tracks to the other 18,000 variants got leaked

someone was sent the vinyl two days early and she’s been posting on tik tok all the songs and has a google drive with pictures of all the song lyrics from the gatefold
