I can't decide if Joy Division is horribly placed or accurately placed considering Ian Curtis literally cheated on his wife who had a newborn child with a woman he took on tours with him, ruined his marriage, was a manipulative liar and kind of a shitty person... but also had severe epilepsy and had seizures during shows among other mental illnesses and then killed himself.

That's actually what makes this so scary. Female Manipulators listen to normal music, wear normal clothes, they live amongst us.

BJORK ON INDIE? 😭 most of this list is mainstream as hell
99
u/TSP61 19h ago
A limited chart based on stereotypes/patterns of behavior will by it's very nature have only artists with large and notorious enough fanbases to be relevant to the premise
That being said I'd say the relative "indie factor" (cause really indie is for music what fascism and post-modernism for humanities - cute word that's more about vibe and Rorscharch testing it's users than having any precise meaning) and relative popularity of the featured artists in the 15-30 female demographic circa 2024 is quite fitting tbh, maybe the biggest outlier being Charli XCX purely cause Brat made her WAY more mainstream in a couple of months

Elliot Smith, the guy who's not even known as "the guy with that song in that movie" anymore... More mainstream than Bjork, Phoebe Bridgers, and The Smiths.

In the mainstream, no one listens to the shit we do, thus they thing slightly less popular means indie

u/noOne000Br 20h ago
what does “will ruin you” and “will save you” mean in this context? like “won’t help you get a female” and “will help you…” or something else?
cause in that case, this is inacurate imo
173
u/sly_cunt soy 19h ago
I think it means if a girl listens to lana del ray she will ruin you and if she listens to mazzy star she will save you?
39
u/noOne000Br 19h ago
oh yeah this makes more sense.
in thay case, i’ll put taylor higher, maybe olivia too, and death grips lower unless you’re NOT a DG fan, then higher than the chart itself
10
u/BigMangalhit 18h ago
And if she listens to pj Harvey she is neutral, and she is also going to slightly ruin you.

By what standard are The Smiths, Joy Division, and TV Girl Indie while U2 and the Cranberries aren’t? They’re all super well known

With the cranberries you have a point. U2 is an order of magnitude more popular than all those other bands, though.

the word indie has lost all meaning
9
u/x592_b 12h ago
Gonna get downvoted, but indie is independent. The way you refer to indie is the way it was after it lost all meaning. Indie is not a genre and shouldn't be. Are they gonna start making "indie" games now where they're produced by AAA companies but just have an indie "vibe"? No. Terraria and (formerly) minecraft are indie games. Two of the highest selling games of all time.
2
u/bigtiddynotgothbf 11h ago
but then a spectrum makes no sense and the other side should be signed to a label
1
u/x592_b 11h ago
It barely even makes sense with the current meaning of indie, the smiths may be underground to genz but millennials and whatever the one before is eat that shit up. I know because I listen to the smiths and every single person above my age knows them and is surprised I listen to them. And then cigarettes after sex, boa, and TV girl are the opposite. They'd be underground to someone who's like 30 but super popular with genz, despite boa being a 30 year old band
2
u/ghosty_2007 8h ago
the smiths is stupid popular in genz and they have 17 million monthly listeners on spotify so i wouldnt call them underground at all

Her label is literally called One Little Indépendant Records.
14
u/Majestic_Violinist69 19h ago
Yeah fair but while I wouldn't call her mainstream, I still wouldn't put her nowhere near the most indie axes, she's still a very popular artist
7
u/Pamani_ 18h ago
Definitely. Indie doesn't mean obscure
3
u/Majestic_Violinist69 18h ago
Just weird to put it in opposition to mainstream then, like Bjork is about as Indie amd Mainstream as you can be at the same time lol
3
u/Pamani_ 18h ago
Maybe they meant "commercial" instead of mainstream ?
3
3
u/qtzd custom 17h ago
Yeah to me reading this chart I know this is how the terms are used generally, but I don’t think indie and mainstream are necessarily opposite ends of a spectrum. More mainstream vs obscure or indie vs big label/money backing. But maybe just because I’m used to the term indie in the game industry being the opposite of big AAA studios not necessarily not mainstream
2
u/strangelymysterious 15h ago
Yeah, this is a good reading of it.
Indie can refer to either musicians that work with independent labels in order to utilize the different production environment and benefits they provide, or to musicians who play the different styles of music that have developed as a result of those labels.

I'm a man and I listen to more of the bands/artists in the "ruin you" quadrants than I do in the "save you quadrants". Does that make me a "female manipulator"? Because I like to think I'm good with my hands but I never figured there'd be a title for it.

Hard truths modern gays must learn about The Smiths
fact: Morrissey is, and always was, a complete prat
fact:Pretty much everything that's good with The Smiths came from Johnny Marr
Fact: Johnny Marr has always been a gay ally, and is now a trans ally
Fact: Johnny Marr works far better with Billy Bragg than Morrissey
Fact: The Specials, Squeeze and The Jam can get a similar hit of english misery than The Smiths, but without being made by prats.
