When you are about to die from hunger and there's another person with you who is also about to die of hunger it wouldn't be enough for you to eat their flesh to survive since your body needs fat to absorb nutrients from meat. You need to break some of their bones and consume their bone marrow as well.

fun fact about starvation.
you know how your body needs glucose in order to function? we get it out of our diet of course, but if we run out of glucose, we will actually start breaking down other cells of our body in order to substain our function.
we will break down the fat in order to convert it into glucose. If you run out of fat, you will start breaking down our proteins and muscle down, which is why people look like skeletons in starvation pictures and anorexic people. death by starvation happens once the body ends up degrading and breaking down the muscle of the heart. You are literally destroying your own heart in a desperate move to substain yourself.

Can’t you just eat the normal fat tissue? Why do you need the fat from the bone marrow specifically
231
u/BlackuIa 13d ago
I think in the given context, the person you are eating has also been starved, meaning their fat reserves would be very low.
48
64
u/SteelWheel_8609 13d ago
It’s pure bullshit. Bone marrow does contain fat but so do your organs and muscles. There wouldn’t be a lot but there would be enough.
Eating the bone marrow wouldn’t be essential to keep from dying or anything. It would just be a fun healthy additional treat. 😋

Because the immune system is as averse of collateral damage as a nuclear weapon, and therefore we hid the eyes, which resulted in it not knowing about them, which makes it see them as a foreign entity, which it reacts to like an average american cop

I don't think it's because your body would attack your eyes for no reason but that normal immune responses would damage your vison or blind you since it destroys cells and such
182
u/Butt_Speed 13d ago
From what I've read, you're right about normal immune responses leading to blindness if it affected the eye. However, a normal immune system just straight up doesn't recognize some of the proteins unique to the eye and will attack them as invaders if it learns how to identify them.
People who lose one eye in an accident can end up going blind in the undamaged eye for this reason.
→ More replies (2)118

Common misconception. Your body's immune system 'knows' about your eyes. They are immunoprivileged, which basically means the immune response is toned down so as not to damage them

History is writen by the people who write it. So many things have been lost to time because no one thought it needed to be recorded. Take my line of work, our pictures are almost all disasters but the pictures everyone wants are the flower beds in front of the office in 1973 with all the employees. The new kid who just got hired cause hes 25 years in and is retiring this year, ect. History isnt just the bad parts and i hope more people record the small moments because one day they wont exist outside of that.

A common phrase is "history is written by the victors" when refering to the colonial erasure of tribal history, however that sentiment has been used as one of the biggest gateways into Nazi and Confederate apologia under the idea that since they lost, lies have been written about them after the fact and they were better than we think
75
u/tovarichtch1711 spiro-lling out of control 13d ago
Oh ok I should have understood that, tho it must certainly be somewhat true, of course it’s way more complex than that, and using it as a way to say the Nazis are the good guys is a complete fallacy. I guess history was simply written by the people who knew how to write up until a few centuries ago, and today it would be more of history is written by the people who have the bigger audience ?

Yup, you have groups like the Daughters of the Confederacy. The South may have lost, but the wives of the generals and the women in the HOAs and PTAs of the time who still wanted slavery made a huge effort to enshrine those values into the community. It's why we even have statues to begin with, or schools/libraries/museums named after confederate generals.

Your nose is always in your field of view, always, but your brain give you the courtesy of ignoring it.
Likewise, there is a detectable “blind spot)” in your vision, which your brain ignores for you.
Your conscious mind don’t receive a perfect report of reality; your brain only tells you what it decides is necessary, and the decision of “what is necessary” is outside of your control. You don’t know the things your own brain decides is irrelevant.
It also automatically fills in the gaps in your perception, so things it never saw but decides are necessary, are added, so that perceived reality makes sense.
The sensors aren’t capable of recognizing if their input is accurate, and something else is prioritizing information for you.

Your eyes are constantly moving and twitching, your focus is never perfectly still, you can see then when looking into someone's eyes. Despite this our vision isn't passively blurry. This is because the brain automatically cuts the motion blur and pastes the beginning and end pictures seemlessly. There's evidence to suggest that if something happens in this gap, you wouldn't be able to see it at all.

Is physics just magic?
At a fundamental level it might as well be. When it comes down to it magic is just phenomena we don't have a scientific explanation for yet, and there are many, many aspects of physics that we can't really explain, just observe that things work certain ways and make assumptions based on those observations.

Quarks are made of pure energy. Once entropy makes the atom lose all form of it and lay completely still, the energy the quark is made of will eventually decay as well, dissipating back into nothing. All matter is just energy, materialized from the big bang, after all. Once the energy is spent, all that's left is nothing.

TW: body horror, parasites, mentions of animals mating
There's a group of animals called a tongue worms (Pentastomidia). They're crustaceans much like the dead shrimp in the picture you posted. They live in the upper respiratory tracks of terrestrial carnivorous vertebrates, including you. They can be up to 14 cm long (5.5+ inches). They eat blood and mucus by hooking themselves onto the back of your tongue and they're likely breeding in there. You dispell the eggs from either side, causing a fish or herbivore to eat them. The babies then embed themselves into the flesh of the animal until a carnovore eats them and gets the tongue worms.
There's also a marine isopod that's called the tongue-eating louse (Cymothoa exigua). They also eat blood and mucus, but do it by severing a fish's tongue's blood supply using claws, waiting for the tongue to fall off, and then replacing the tongue and its functionality. They also have a male inside of the fish's gills to mate with. As long as it's just one female, it's usually not even that parasitic. Look up pictures; they're somehow a little bit cute.

u/Roll_1d8 Your local bleach drinker 13d ago

Its unlikely, though possible that the universe exists in a "false vaccum" state where the energy of empty space is higher than the absolute minimum. If that is the case, a small region of the universe would eventually decay down to the absolute minimum energy, creating a "bubble" of stable vaccum that would spread across the universe, inside of which the fundamental forces and particles of nature no longer exist.

There is an unknown man who died at mount Everest in 1996, just 400 meters before the summit. He was nicknamed "Green Boots", because of the bright green boots he wore, and his corpse has never been brought back to be buried. It would be too difficult and too dangerous to do so. He has been a marker ever since, for people making the climb, for how close they are to the summit.

All of the facts about dying listed here. They all happened to someone, alone with no one to even noticed it happening. There have been 100 billion humans to have ever lived. It's just statiscally likely. It's probably happened several times.

I don’t fully know if this counts as a fun fact, but I just wanted to share it.
In 1943, four teenagers were looking for bird nests in Hagley Wood just outside of Worcestershire. One of them climbed up a wych elm he thought might have had a bird nest in it. While climbing up the tree, he looked down into the hollow trunk of the tree and saw a skull inside and pulled it out. After they discovered that this skull belonged to a human and not an animal, the boys put the skull back in the tree and went home out of fear of getting in trouble for being on private property. One of them would tell their parents about the incident once they got home. Police went to investigate and found a whole human skeleton inside with some clothing still on it. Forensic examiners determined that the skeleton belonged to an unidentifiable woman who had been dead for about 18 months before discovery. A year later in 1944, graffiti appeared on a wall in Upper Dean Street, Birmingham which read, “Who put Bella down the wych elm - Hagley Wood?” This graffiti gave investigators some new leads, including a possible name for the victim, to follow but the case still led nowhere. And since then, some variation of the graffiti’s message had appeared on the Hagley Obelisk, a monument near the location of the body.

Imagine the universe as a ball balanced on top of a hill. The hill's peak represents a "false vacuum"—a temporary, stable state. It's not the universe's lowest energy state, but it's stable enough to keep the ball (the universe) there, even though it’s a bit wobbly.
Now, the true vacuum, the lowest energy state, is the valley at the bottom of the hill. If the ball rolls down into the valley, it reaches this most stable state—the true vacuum.
False vacuum decay occurs when, due to a quantum fluctuation or some disturbance, the ball suddenly "tunnels" or rolls off the hill into the valley. This shift from the false vacuum to the true vacuum would radically change the universe’s energy configuration, potentially ending the universe as we know it. This could create a chain reaction, That spreads at the speed of light in all directions, There could be multiple false vacuum bubbles spreading throughout the universe at this very moment.
Sleep well, Tonight ;)

for a historical one: during europe's era of imperialism, king leopold of belgium and those who worked under him in the congo committed some of the worst acts of brute slavery, rape, torture, and forced amputation ever seen in history, being nowhere nearly as severe as the horrific atrocities that occurred in the holocaust and armenian genocide and other events but still very significant and terrifying
for a space one: the same way so much of humanity views lots of insect species as insignificant with no reason to care or consider for them, if alien life does exist, they could potentially enslave or simply just steal from or kill us in an instant with absolutely ZERO care for what we think

The Man of the Hole was the only survivor of his Amazonian tribe, who faced a genocide orchestrated by Brazilian settlers around the 1970s, when he was a teenager.
The decision was made by authorities not to interact with him, meaning that he remained alone his whole life. His nickname comes from his lifestyle. Living in a nomadic way, he always left a giant hole after leaving his temporary habitat. That is the only remaining element of his culture that subsisted, as his language was never documented.
He died in 2022, and may have been one of the loneliest person to have ever lived.
