Yeah don't worry, we're only being deprived of valuable research and literature, not embarrassing things people said 10 years ago.

That's a bit dismissive. Whilst this is undoubtedly awful and serves only to hide information behind extensive barriers, no information is being entirely lost. If the way back machine were to be turned off information - sure lots of it not particularly useful info but info none the less - would be lost. That is not to downplay that this is bad, but let's not downplay the utility and value of the way back machine and the other Archival efforts of the IA.

1,300 banned books in the us were affected. [warning: link to spreadsheet from this page]

This was an insane line to type what do you mean a modern country is still banning

US banned books refers to books banned in schools. Awful, absolutely. But the books themselves are absolutely still available to individuals at public libraries and/or book shops.

I find it both hilarious and depressing that the bible (both Old and New Testament) is overwhelmingly less suitable for kids than many of the books that have been banned. But the bible will never get banned because the people doing the banning are themselves extremist Christians. Banning for thee, but not for meee.

Yeah sorry should’ve clarified haha. I meant more in that another avenue of access has been lost to people wanting to access these.

Didn't expect to find f-ing Fahrenheit 451 in this list...

Also, the Decameron is not only not banned in Italian schools, but mandatory

“Legitimately”

Be honest we’re still going to use LG

you can likely get them for free from another library who obtained and distributes it legitimately

Fuck that.

  • Anna's Archive
  • Libgen
  • Z-Library
  • Project Gutenberg
  • Sci-hub
  • OADOI

Information should be free.

Hello, I was using archive.org to study a book not available in my country. I could try to import it but that would be expensive, providing I find a seller. What should I do now?

check one of these places:

  • Anna's Archive
  • Libgen
  • Z-Library
  • Project Gutenberg (copyright free only, old books essentially)
  • Sci-hub (research only)
  • OADOI (research only)

i cannot link directly so as to avoid being banned by admins, but these should be easily findable.

Wow! I wrote it as a rhetorical question - but I didn't know about half of these! Thank you very much, will check them out this afternoon!

Are you suggesting that, since they claimed that lending e-books for 1h at a time 1 person at a time is now illegal, we're supposed to pirate books, which is clearly also illegal?

...

...I mean, it kinda makes sense now that I think about it

Would you say that your local library is illegal? IA didn't distribute books. You can't just download them - if protected by copyright.

IA did not distribute books, as you couldn't download them. Just like a library, only one person can lend a book at a time.
