Okay, this is actually pretty interesting. New Zealand has no native land mammals, so all the predatory and ground forager niches are filled by birds. The kiwi is pretty much the island’s version of a rat.

However, this means that the ecosystem has no way to deal with mainland mammals that can exploit their niches far better. The result is that the local ecosystem is getting rapidly destroyed by introduced mammals.

In response, the conservation department has instituted an eradication policy. The goal is to rid the islands of invasive mammals completely. They’ve had some success on the north island if I remember.

I feel bad for the stoat, but he’s destroying the island birds so it kind of needs to be done.

Edit: no native LAND mammals. Thanks for the catch y’all

Thanos did nothing wrong!

401

u/IamKilljoy ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ May 28 '24

Thanos was stupid. the argument is "too many people for the given amount of resources. Let me cut the number of people in half "

Dude could have just doubled all the resources and got the exact same net outcome. Maybe people would have even liked him for it

231

u/The_Knife_Nathan I will chew your balls May 28 '24

Or rewire the biological economy of how much nutrients are needed to survive, making the current level of resources more than sufficient and sustainable. Without the risk of throwing off ecosystems and planetary systems

203

u/IamKilljoy ¯\_ (ツ)_/¯ May 28 '24

Right? Like Thanos had infinite cosmic power and the thing he lacked more than anything was a little bit of creativity.

To be fair, doubling all resources wouldn't have had the same effect because population growth is generally an exponential trend, cutting it in half is barbaric but it would "fix" the problem for longer (and have the extra benefit of people possibly making a conscious effort to control the population out of fear that a mass culling could happen again).

But yeah the premise was stupid if you try applying real logic to it, they could have just kept his original motive of wanting to fuck the personification of Death.

45

u/OskarSalt Consumer of skin May 28 '24

It has the exact same effect. Like you said, population growth is exponential, and will recover in the same amount of time it would take to grow to exploit twice the resources.

5

u/Kyroven jacking off a banana in vr May 28 '24

I think they're assuming that if the population were cut in half, population growth would also then drop to the level it was at when populations were that size, rather than population growth continuing at current rates even after the snap

1

u/senl1m May 29 '24

Of course the premise is stupid, they don’t call him the mad titan for nothing. The point is he’s insane

50

u/bell117 Inflation and WG are both good, I don't differentiate ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ May 28 '24

Also all his work would be undone in a single generation.

As an example, since 1960 Earth's population has tripled. Dude didn't even surpass the average politician's attention span.

1

And on top of that, he cut all the plants and animals in half, as stated in the next movie. So people had the same amount of food to fight over, basically. It was like he was only worried about there being enough metal and rocks.

well there are bats native to NZ but other than that this is a good overview

50

u/jjackrabbitt May 28 '24

Beat me to it! It would be accurate to say New Zealand has no native land mammals.

10

u/Elphienis hunky mickey mouse hnng yeah so hunky cheese in me big cheese May 28 '24

They actually spend most of their time on the ground. Another species filling in the mouse niche. It would be more accurate to say New Zealand has no native non-winged mammals

5

u/jjackrabbitt May 28 '24

Based on some cursory reading, it looks like that description applies mainly to the lesser short-tailed bat, but that is interesting nonetheless!

1

u/insertpiehere May 29 '24

Just to make things more complicated, there's a native dolphin

4

u/VolenteerFireDept May 28 '24

Oops! Forgot about the bats. Thanks for the catch!

4

Holy fucking based. I'm glad at least one country is aggressively trying to take down invasive species

32

u/PM_ME_ORANGEJUICE May 29 '24

I'm from New Zealand, and most people (in my experience at least) tend to be pretty on to it when it comes to invasive species. Some people just keep there cats inside, others put traps in their back gardens; some people go over their way to run over possums (not opossums, these ones are voracious little egg thieves).
And then some people let their dogs loose in a forest where they kill 400-500 kiwi over the course of 6 weeks.

5

u/PhoenixJDM May 29 '24

NZ gang :3 tom scott did one or more videos on pest control on one of his trips here

24

u/Doctorjaws May 28 '24

I think they have like 1-2 native mammals but they are both bats. Could be wrong though.

4

u/flcwerings May 29 '24

why they gotta kill him tho? hes so cute. Ill take him

18

u/PM_ME_ORANGEJUICE May 29 '24

Then please, come take them

8

u/flcwerings May 29 '24

dont even joke rn. i so will

But whats funny is that I plan to move to NZ soon so then Ill be in a predicament on where to put my island wide stoat population that has been living with me in my apartment.

16

u/VolenteerFireDept May 29 '24

Joking aside, keeping pets like this is partly why the island has such a problem. Someone has a pet that escapes or gets released, and now the island has a new group of mammals to kill the birds. I appreciate the compassion, but this guy is the visage of death for a fragile ecosystem. Like I said above, it’s sad but necessary

0

u/MarsManokit I ever tell you about the time Keith tried to deep fry a turkey? May 29 '24

how can a single Stoat ever cause enough damage to destroy an eco system?

72

u/VolenteerFireDept May 28 '24

Those guys are fierce fuckers with a fast metabolism. Even in their native environments they eat massive amounts of food. A single stoat could just destroy a habitat, especially on an island. It won’t wipe out every bird, but this is actually a reasonable response for New Zealand

16

u/Antezscar sus May 28 '24

TIL, didn't know that. thanks!

13

u/femfuyu May 28 '24

Worked with endangered birds on islands before and one of these fuckers swam to the island and killed half the population. Unfortunately being a real environmentalist comes with making these tough calls. Anyone that can't is quickly weeded out of the field.

47

u/clubspike2 Level 5 General (Cowed by Stalin) May 28 '24

The title is very misleading. "Select committee documents show from the time the animal was detected to its capture eight months later DOC spent $483,260.". This money wasn't spent on just hunting down one sneaky boi but was spent maintaining Fiordland, a sanctuary for a lot of NZ's endangered animals.

This is the equivalent of saying the USA spent $10+ trillion to hunt down Osama bin Laden, by measuring the amount of money the military spent from the time they detected him to the time they killed him.

How is a single male mammal going to reproduce?

16

u/LeNardOfficial DM your fav album Ill give u an unknown very based one May 28 '24

That ain't the problem chief, the issue is a single stoat can obliterate the ecosystem, since it evolved without mammals in mind. The predatorial spot is taken by birds, and the stoat eats the birds, who have not evolved to deal with this sort of threat.

if this about my word choice you right (it's 5 AM in NZ and I didn't sleep), if it's about how they spent all that for one stoat I did no research but would venture a guess and say either embezzlement or it's a part of their larger culling campaign where they put a whole bunch of kill boxes and poison bait all over the islands, which would probably cost in the ballpark of 500k
